Six as of this morning's count. Two separate hatchings, a few days apart. Several are Instar 3 now... -
Taoist Immortal Monarchs: Alchemy in Nature
silent thunder replied to silent thunder's topic in Daoist Discussion
Monarch Caterpillers are referred to as Instars. They hatch from eggs as Instar 1, then molt four more times in the larval stage. Instar 3 is when we see the tell-tale arching chewing and heavy leaf consumption begin. In Instar 1 and 2, there's almost no activity and so far, no visible signs of eating. Though based on how they're positioned on the leaves, it seems they are breaking through the main vein of the leaf they're on and drinking from that... perhaps their mouths aren't developed enough for leaf chewing until Instar 3... This next bit is quite intriguing. The timing of their molt between each Instar phase is temperature dependent, as is when they transform to Chrysalis. This may explain why three of the last four did not successfully Chrysalize and why they are known to travel up to 10 meters from their birth plant to find a suitable place for forming the Chrysalis. They may have been seeking the right spot with the appropriate temperature to make the shift. This is rather critical as the Chrysalis forms in under 10 minutes from the initiation of the process. If temps are outside the range, they cannot shift. -

Was wondering how much caterpillers sleep, as two seem to be quite sedentary yestereve and this early morn. Turns out they were molting. They've swollen in size noticeably. The other two are hunkered down in the flower bursts up top, munching contentedly. Simple joy to watch them in silence... myself also content. -

So shines a good deed, in a weary world. ~Willy Wonka (by way of Roald Dahl) -
Glad to share the bliss mate. Thanks for the reminder on Samsara, it's time I revisit that film.

We are drowning in information while starving for content and wisdom. ~anon -
That's an interesting experience and take on it. Thanks for sharing. To me, the 'master's guidance' is another type of translation and so can be as relevant, (or irrelevant) as any other's. edit to add: As to the bolded bit... to claim to know what others can comprehend is beyond me. I can't (nor do I think anyone else can effectively) make assumptions as to how readily and how deeply anyone else may comprehend any text, concept, or experiential occurence in life. All I account for is my own process. /|\

Words only resonate in me when they stem from a qualified observer. His words carried no gravity for me.

Even for a native Chinese speaker and reader... Classical Chinese is not modern Chinese and poses challenges to comprehension. Had a conversation about this not long ago with a friend who studies and is trying to translate ancient Chinese; the distinctive differences between Classical Chinese and Modern is similar to the differences between our Modern English and Old English... Pick up an Old English story and give it a whirl sometime if interested. I find it fascinating how language evolves. I studied Old English while training as a classical actor and was deeply interested in Etymology. It is significantly different, in both nomenclature/verbage and especially in the cultural tonations and the unspoken implications and meanings of phrases that to folks of that day, were obvious and clear, but to our modern sensibilites, are quite alien and cryptic. And yet... human experience is universal. Smiles, laughter, tears need no translations. This is how to me, some concepts ring through with clarity and resonant sense even after centuries and translations. We all share that core of being human and thus, some aspects, no matter how long separated by time, or language resonate as clearly as a bell. We all share the same human tones and their ancient songs (and experiential truths) resonate now... (as I've experienced it).

I cannot ever be wholly certain that I know how anything is interpreted by another from their words, nor if what I experience is what is experienced by another... Nor can I assume that I interpret the words of another as they intended them to be conveyed. We all occupy the center of our own awareness and thus, experience of reality. I share what I experience without claiming authority over anything but that this is how I try to convey what I've experienced given the words and concepts I have and my understanding of them at this time... My words may not have the meaning of the ancient's, or yours, or anyone's... Words, concepts in the end, are rather paultry, insignificant things... mostly unsuited to conveying meaning beyond limited mind box things.

"I can explain it to you... but I can't understand it for you." Me to a work-mate on the last show. or when folks are being purposely obtuse, my patience is done and I'm pissy. "I'd try and explain it further... but I don't have enough crayons." -

Started doing this at work, where they make horrific stuff they call coffee, but is more suited for degreasing machinery... I fill my thermos in the morning and drink that, then add hot water to it, to recharge the heat and refill it throughout the day. By the afternoon I'm drinking straight hot water with a hint of coffee to it.
