What he said:-) But remember to include John C's opinion:-) And your own. In fact, perhaps your own would be a good place to start :-) I'm still looking fer mine:-)

Exactly! So what techniques/modes/practices have we come up with to do that? We could have a neat list:-)

"You are unsuccessfully trying to oversimplify the nature of... to support your ideas about..." Funny how that keeps happening. I think sometimes if I could stop doing that and do it the other way. That my ideas would properly accord with nature. Would be a hell of a lot easier. Well, not really " funny ", but hopefully you get my drift.

How much do we undersatnd the Microcosmic Orbit...?
Birch replied to ChiDragon's topic in Daoist Discussion
It's very interesting Chi-dragon. I've had a few experiences with MCO that suggest there's lots of "stuff" going on with it. Certainly as was mentioned in the other thread, the component of awareness focussed into attention (imagine shining a broad lamp on something, then switch it for a laser) is IME (and obviously IMO as a result) it a key aspect of it (the MCO) I see it as "patterns" of attention that have a direct physical (and mental) set of consequences which I think are in addition to the positive effects of deep breathing. I've experienced a definite change in my ability to do stuff with my left hand for example. Sometimes suprisingly so. I mentioned the muscle control and ability to isolate a few of the lower abdominal (and not forgetting pelvic) muscles. No external movements do this that I'm aware of. I didn't do that before (does this mean I couldn't? Not sure) Through MCO I also realised something about the "inner" and the "outer", they're not arbitrary exactly but my mind definitely decides upon which is which. When I decide to include everything, my mind finds this both unacceptable and wonderous, possibly "true" but it doesn't mean it is:-) My 2cts but still exploring:-) -
Hmm, I wonder. You know IME it's often hard to discern which "concepts" were passed on and coloured one's experience as a result and which experiences are experiences that one can have for oneself and as oneself. I suppose the only way to find out would be to practice his system. Is he currently teaching?

Fortune-Telling and Astrology is a waste of time, energy and money
Birch replied to tulku's topic in General Discussion
I'm pretty interested in astrology. I had a Bazi reading from TaoMeow and it was not only about "the way i am" which was more of an analysis of the various tendencies that interact to make "me" but also how to become a more well-rounded balanced me by avoiding certain things and embracing others. So there's signposts about your incarnation while at the same time you can understand the fabric of the whole. I think that's pretty neat:-) -
No:-) This forum is a good example of people doing it all the time (offering their opinion as advice where the OP wasn't asking for it:-)) I think starting comments with IMO as a way of telling someone that's all you're doing can be useful to others. Maybe it's not always obvious to people. They can then take what they want. I also think sharing your experience might help some people. And being honest when you don't know. But IME, the minute the OP closes down following whatever you said is IME a sign not to push any further. On a discussion forum, that doesn't seem to happen either and people will continue beyond that point. But that's because they have more on the agenda than simply helping the OP;-) It might be a perspective held dear or a whole belief system. I'll admit this post is itself an example of "agenda" . I recently had the experience of being "advised"' in such a manner and no-one ended up appreciating it, if I recall, neither the givers nor the receivers. So it's a great question you asked:-)

I'd just go for it:-) But I'm a girl and I don't care:-) More seriously, it would seem you CAN hurt yourself with that stuff. Go to Trunk's site. Or maybe we should post a sticky about it (no pun intended)

Well i suppose if it's coming up you'll face it anyway, courage or not:-) Might as well have courage. Nothing wrong with getting paid :-)

Would people Like a Buddha Bum sub forum?
Birch replied to Seth Ananda's topic in General Discussion
I'm not sure I get annoyed exactly. But I find it funny that a lot of buddhist postings end up like When the point they seem (to me) to be trying to make is Or maybe that's not it and I should read more. IMO the Taoist stuff is a bit more practical :-) -
Fortune-Telling and Astrology is a waste of time, energy and money
Birch replied to tulku's topic in General Discussion
" if the masses only dare to make the required sacrifices.. " Now I'm not quite so sure that it 'goes' that way. Probably goes both. I don't think attending to folks as 'masses' (which BTW seems to be a relatively recent invention:-)) is going to help anyone much. Neither the 'masses' reading this and identifying as such, nor yourself who seems to see all those others as 'masses'. The latter is pure invention, IMO. I haven't met any 'masses' and I have no idea who they are. Except as fiction, of course :-) -
I found your post pretty moving :-) The things I don't find moving any more are when I see or hear someone 'splaining things to others. Like they know better and the other people don't. I still think there's something to be done about that whole thing.

KAP NOT cheerleading -
What he said :-) And my other 2cts. Stop with the 'why' - it's just a corruption of language to stay fixed in the 'how'. IMO/IME

" if it's necessary then it is." It's not. My 2 cts. Nice to see you back.
-
"sometimes people are just dicks and it is about them and not about me" "Basically imo everyone is insane to a certain degree." That pretty much sums it up for me :-)

No I don't think it's a big deal. Seems enough thoughtful/interested folks who practice can discuss. IMO Buddhism is referred to as a 'vehicle' and if anyone wants to rid themselves of it, there's space for that too here. However, I do agree that there's a point in practice where it just seems easier to grab on to any -ism. Whence the Buddhists make their killing Should they be kicked out for that? No, I like them close

"So now I am a Taoist and KS loving Buddhist" Whore! -
He doesn't bug me either. Wouldn't it be interesting to figure out how why how that sort of thing happens? IMO especially for self-described 'non-dualists'?????? More seriously, I don't figure it's quite as simple as 'button pushing'. Had to put that in

Very interesting read. Thanks for sharing it. The author has quite a few explanations that seem to cover lots of cases. In my case I found solace and a 'place to stay' in my conviction that I am not a reincarnation :-) But he also wrote that people disbelieve because they don't remember/ are unconscious. Bases covered. Smart guy :-) I think I wonder, 'did I prefer this story to any other(s) I have read / been told'? I liked the part where he explained that it was in one's best interests to have 'de' (of various kinds). I think it is, probably. But I'm presently struggling with this idea in my perspective of our world. Quite some.

Yeah I think there are a few things that play havoc with people's systems. I still don't know anything about any 'evolutionary purpose' of suicide but I do figure that forcing yourself into work that doesn't fit your rhythms might not be a great idea. Better to find something else. Anyway, one of the 'takeaways' from meditation that I'd like to share from my experience is this 'notion' where you approach the feeling (any at all, although in this case it's 'suicidal') and get an awareness of exactly what this feeling feels and where it feels and whence it feels from and all that. I've done it with quite a number of pretty awful feelings and in many cases I found that part of what was making the feeling so horrible was my avoidance of it. I felt like I was 'born' with a hole (although probably not literally) in my heart. I think homeopathy helped with that, but so did realizing that holes are also meant to see through :-) Not meant to be corny. Sorry. It's just what worked for me so far :-) And so as not to dismiss or sound esoteric. So did qi-gong and therapy and this forum

Well, I've found if I shut up too much then they're (the movies) still actually quite deafening. Anyways. Seems that these days, meditation and me aren't much of a thing. I'm not sure if this means I should do it more or less, or just forget about it. What do you reckon Mr MH?

So here is not the place to discuss golden-light-filled OBE's accompanied with spontaneous ecstasy and flying 'dreams' during sleep paralysis then :-p? I mentioned the muscle issues because prior to MCO, these things were simply not part of my conscious awareness. How they became so - and over what period of time and practice 'regimen' is worth discussing IMO. It's a discussion forum And paradoxically, the sharing currently going on seems to be doing more (for me) to enhance understanding of this practice than several previous threads on the subject Glad you are here Chi Dragon to give your POV!
-
I'd like to add a note about the muscle control that seems to come with MCO. Prior, I'd never tried flexing any of the muscles around the sacral area. Now I can, and with some amount of precision. I think that this also speaks to something to be discovered about MCO. I've read people can develop Iron Shirt from it. But I figure you'd have to do it with attention pretty much all day to get that?

Wow, thread-killing post Non! You're back with more of the same? Those sites are sh*te. IMO of course
