  1. The real Medicine

The maths-music relationship is a bit hard to navigate through too. Although I went through uni with a gifted mathematician who was also a composer so I can understand the attraction of combining those topics. It's all good
  2. Eating Bananas Helps Too

I can't pretzel myself into a lotus either Anything comfortable will work. I do deer exercises standing or just lying down. You will eventually learn these in KAP so no rush, just do what is enjoyable and have fun.
  3. Discarding the Maps

But there is always another new interesting book waiting to take up my practice time Maps just seem to be the way we generally learn. Some people are gifted and seem to be able to trust themselves enough, or just know, the right way to travel. For me it's like a martial arts. You start off with very definite ways to do something, learning a set of tools to be applied A - B - C But with experience over time these tools become you and you just flow through them spontaneously in harmony with the situation. So depending one where you are in that in that continuum of beginner - advanced - formless determines the type of map (instruction) that is relevant to you. Another music one. I was handicapped by learning saxophone via the school band system. I could sight read but not play what was inside me. I just never learnt how to jump into improvisation, although I wrote some songs for our 7 piece jazz band and went on to do some sax stuff at uni. Ended up AMEB grade 4 which is mid level, not real skillful and I could tell I was never going to be world class or even really good But I can improvise on harp as my grandfather taught me to play by listening to him. Jerry Portnoy's lessons took my harp to a new level. He talks about people learning to improvise and the importance of starting off listening too and copying the greats that went before you.

  5. Eating Bananas Helps Too

  6. Exactly, some people imagine themselves to be batteries storing charge, others are capacitors flowing energy. We are not what we think we are. But what we think, we are.
  7. Personal Practice Blog?

I sent Sean a PM. If a few of us do that he will notice. (It's like praying to God )
  8. If you work for a family member

Unless you signed a letter of employment/contract it's probably not illegal unless there is a genuine expectation of permanent full time work as opposed to casual work. It may boil down to number of regular weekly shifts/hours over time. If it is illegal the difficulties of enforcing it and getting along with your family while you are waiting for action. Even then will you still be able to enjoy work if you do get reinstated....... Personally I'm a union rep and we don't like to see workers mistreated, but you may be better off looking for something else. If it's not a good atmosphere you are not likely to enjoy working there.
  9. Power of the Inner Smile

Real practice in real life. _/\_ to King K
  10. Combat conditioning? Sun salutations are quick. I got my yoga teacher to put a bit more upper body work into them for me (low planks) and I do them on my fingertips now and then. Learning a sai form at the moment for kung fu, thats good for developing forearms. I'd got with whatever is fun that you enjoy doing everyday. p.s. we are at home, who doesn't work out naked?
  11. Kunlun follow up poll

yes it is rather bizarre to read a series of ... I also want an "archive" if you don't want it out there on the web don't write it in the first place, or at least make it useless so we don't miss it when it's gone Although if people take issue with posts (for whatever reason) I can understand them being deleted later to keep the peace. Anyhow this really is the thread that just won't die it starts to look all calm and settled & then *pow* Tao in action!
  12. Yes & we already have a few nifty height adjustable desks. But between yoga, tai chi, and playing cards during breaks we are rarely at our desks long enough to need good ergonomics (I love my job)
  13. Kunlun follow up poll

That last one by O is really well worth the effort. So agreeing to disagree from our separate corners and despite everyone best intentions thus ends Kunlun. Disappearing into the void from whence it came. Until it is reinvented by another generation? I wonder if there will be another practice that will bring so much change to us here at TTB ?
  14. I liked that Senshido vid. Chairs and belts and one vs many practice. Good stuff.
  15. Religious Taoism

    that is a cool story.
  16. I disagree, obviously YMMV No. But we do have one of those fitness balls in the office that we sit on from time to time. We buy them for the physiotherapy department. Unfortunately the one that was recommended as the right size for our height and weight isn't the right size to sit on and use the computers with the desks we have, so we can't use it very often.
  17. colon cleansing

  21. I have had one of these kneeling chair for years Very comfortable for 2~3 hours, after that the pressure on the shins makes things a bit sore. I guess mine is no longer made as the above is the closest I could find, just missing the castor's. Edit: This is closer but I don't have the scooped seat Unfortunatly I don't have this either Naughty!
  22. Iron Shirt Chi Kung - Mantak Chia

It turns out my Sifu taught me Golden Bell doing 10 simple chi gungs at the start of kung fu training. I just did what I was told. It was many years after that I learnt the "Golden Bell" name, apparently it's also a secret practice A MCO style circulation is the first chi gung. So I would agree that a physically moving orbit (as opposed to static meditation) is a important start. YMMV
