What exactly is a dan tien? I know the three dan tiens are major energy centers in the body (LDT, MDT, and UDT) but physically what are these centers? Are they glands, groups of nerve fibers, etc.? Anyone have a concrete understanding of what it is? The only thing I've been able to find are abstract explanations.
-
Interesting theories Dorian. Those are the sort of answers/ideas I was looking for when I started this topic.
-
So what you are saying is that the LDT is like a hole in the ground? It exists and can be filled but it's not actually a physical thing.
-
Interesting info! Thanks for the post. This explains why Jim was able to tell whether or not Chang was in the US simply by his gut feeling.
-
If the LDT was not a thing it wouldn't exist. it can be felt so it is obviously there. Even if it is hard to understand it is still a things that exists and is 100% real.
-
Haha I know what you're saying, but think of my question this way... Lift up your shirt and look at your lower abdomen. Your LDT is right there. It's as real as the muscle, fat, etc. right below your skin. But how does it exist? There's just a bunch of liquid and tissue there. It's real but what is it? What is it made of? Energy is stored there but what is it being stored in? Is it a group of concentrated nerve fibers? MPG's answer makes sense. Perhaps the dan tiens and chakras are apart of the spiritual body and only visible to a person who can see the yin aspect of reality. Still physical and real but not physical existence to people who only see the yang aspect of reality.

Unless I'm behind the time modern science still hasn't completely figured out what light is but they have a much better understanding then what the ancient romans might have had. From what I've learned light is a form of electromagnetic radiation. Some say that light is a particle while others say it is simply a wave. Sound is just a vibration cased by energy. Some view light this way. Others view light as a particle like air. I'm not sure how correct I am but this is what I remember from Physical Science. I'm taking Physics at the momment and might have a better understanding by the end of the year. Ancient people might descibed light this way; light is an existence that allows sight. Just shooting out an idea of what they might have said but you get the idea. Their description would have been abstract and would not have given you a near as concrete understanding as modern science could. When it comes to things like yin chi, modern science hasn't even touched the serface. Eventually however science might be able to explain it almost completely and the understanding will no longer be abstract.

I believe that everything in this universe has a hard science to it and has an equally real existence as anything else. We tend to label some things as supernatural, magic, abstract, etc. but it is only because we do not yet have a clear, scientific understanding of it. Take light for example. At one time people only had abstract or indirect explanations of light when in reality there is a hard science to it. I was simply wondering if anyone had at least a theory on what exactly a dan tien, or chakra for that matter, was.

I'm not sure where you got the idea that the dan tiens are simply locations, but although I respect your opinion I disagree and if you believe that there's not much point in continuing to post on this thread. The dan tiens are things and the point of this thread was too try and gain a more concrete, scientific understanding of what exactly they are.
-
That's sort of what I was looking for. A more clear, scientific explanation. I doubt that many people have this depth of understanding but I figured it was worth a try. Somebody might have at least a theory.
-
I am surprised that any taoist system would not have at least basic teachings about chakras.
-
Yeah I practice nei kung. Today was day 8 and I'm still completely celibate! Shooting for 100 days!
-
Lol so you believe the same thing about chakras?
-
That's pretty much what mine is still like! lol XD
-
I disagree. The dan tiens (like chakras) are things, not simply positions on the body.
-
Wet dreams used to be a MAJOR problem for me and no matter how hard I tried to stay celibate, I couldn't last longer than 4 days max without having a nocturnal emission. Through disipline and practice though I have been able to make nocturnal emissions less and less frequent. Today was my seventh day of complete celibacy (the longest I've gone so far) and I've been able to deal with the energy quite well. Dhiggs, how long did it take for you to start seeing results with celibacy?

My point is that if he IS going to upload a video demonstrating his abilities, he should at least make it convincing. Otherwise he's better off not uploading a video at all. I can't say whether or not he's real of fake because I've never met him, but all I'm saying is that the video makes him look a bit ridiculous. If he really does have abilities he should wait to make a video until he's able to give a convincing demonstration.
-
I'd be more convinced if he'd upload a better REAL QI MANIPULATION video because no one real should be having a spasm trying to get a pencil to move from a couple inches away.

I doubt those rumors are true. Even if they were Jim passed the level so obviously what he was doing worked.

During my meditative training, I have uncontrollably been heating up and getting those "cool" rushes of heat through my body. I've decided to start learning how to gain better control of my energy rather than letting it run wild and leaving cold when I want to be warm and hot when I want to be cool. I've found some info on tummo and how to heat up your body but I haven't found anything on how to reduce body temperature to cool down. Anyone know of anything that might help me with this?

It's not muscular strength. I am unsure on the details but think of it this way; in the documentary there was a scene where John was healing and the guy doing the grounding was having to use all his weight and strength to stay in contact and keep from being thrown back. It wasn't muscle pushing him away, it was energy. If you were clutching the arms of a level 3 student, you would have to be 10x the strength of an average person to withstand it and keep from being knocked back. Ryan Kennelly has the world record bench press at 1075 lbs so he'd be pretty close to withstanding the full power of a level 3 student. It is estimated that a silver back gorilla has the strength to bench press around 3,000 lbs so he'd be able to withstand a level 4 student's full power. The incredible hulk couldn't withstand 100% of Chang's energy.

I don't think Chang would even need full power to survive an uzi attack. People don't fully grasp the exponential doubling of power with each level. According to Jim a person at level 3 is approximately 10x stronger than the average person. Double 10 exponentially 17 times and you have Chang's power. That is of course if he is still at level 20, which I doubt. He is probably higher by now. Assuming he is at level 22 by now, you would have to multiply his massive amount of level 20 power, 4 times. Take ALL that and double it and you have level 23 power. It's crazy! Keep doing that up to level 51 and you have Pa Lok Nen's power. I have absolutely no doubt that a fight between Pa Lok Nen and Lim would destroy a forest.

So how was it a test? Also if that's the case then why did Kosta say in The Magus of Java that after the yin demo, the pellet was completely intact and preserved when in the documentary and during Jim's test the pellet was crushed?
-
I don't really understand that. It is mentioned that a level 2 student needs to be very careful because his defensive chi could kill a person if they hit them while holding their breath or angry. How is the process of defensive chi accidentally killling someone and protecting from a pellet different?

Haha you can train in Mo Pai without a bit of math, but personally I enjoy working it out mathematically.
