Good post. You are referring to concept called Nafs in Islam. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nafs) In Sufism, the most important thing is to purify Nafs. This is called "Tazkiah" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tazkiah) Nafs has seven stages. Each stage is connected to one main chakra. I strongly recommend to read the book "Heart, Self, and Soul: The Sufi Psychology of Growth, Balance, and Harmony" by Ph.D. Robert Frager (http://www.amazon.com/Heart-Self-Soul-Psychology-Balance/dp/083560778X). The book explains Nafs (Self) in a great manner from a western eye. One important aspect about protection methods is daily five times prayer in Islam (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salat) If you are not a Muslim, daily, remember God Almighty and think that you cut the bond between your Nafs and physical body, such that you meditate on being one with God opening your heart. In the above mentioned book, at the end of each chapter, there are some exercises for Westerners. You do not have to be a Muslim or a Sufi to make those exercises. Very simple exercises those can be done at home. Please give that book one chance. It is just $15.08 in Amazon. -
