Its a good combination, I am on the outskirts , not 'in the thick of things' as some are , so I can choose involvement or retirement . In the past when it was more community focused ( guess why ? * ) we used our large community house for meals and visitors giving teachings . We have had Buddhist monks , an elderly Lama , Hare Krishnas, Ananda Marga , etc visit and give talks and teachings . We also ran a center for western esoteric stuff at well, focused on my place . The intention of the place was always to offer a space to explore and learn spirituality , but undefined , it was left up to the individual or groups as to what particular path they wanted to take . * before the age of internet / mobile phones and social media .

If you dont go beyond that , you are still practicing martial arts , just doing someone else's practice .

Some times I think I should build another smaller cabin for people that want a 'mountain retreat ' . You would have to pay money , but that would relieve you from what I have to do in my mountain ' retreat' : Store wood for winter heating and cooking , repair the chainsaw, fill the back up water tanks, repair the pump . cut the grass so you dont get overgrown and infested with tics, leeches spiders and snakes , repair the mower, buy fuel, find a way to repel mosquitoes so you dont get any of the nasty diseases they carry here , build the shelter/ guest cabin , maintain the veggie garden .... ... or just live in the mountains in your own 'retreat'

An interesting concept, I am wondering why you chose that phrase . I see Daniel echoes it : The reason I find your choice of words interesting is that is the scenario one finds oneself in (in some groups ) at the very first level of initiation is ' the wanderer in the wilderness ' - and in these cases, specifically, a desert , and enacted at 'Midnight' . Its not that there is not any water at all , there is but you dont know how to find it . Then (in the ceremony ) you come across a 'helper' ( they might not seem like that at all, at first , as to them, you are 'unknown' ) that leads you to a place where there is water (symbolising knowledge sustenance , life, etc . ) held by a 'tribe' , group , camp, oasis , etc . They also have ways, customs and knowledge that they will share , if you pass the 'trust test ' . The first series of initiations are done in this scenario . This is a tradition within some western mystery/ initiatory schools that has an 'historical mythology' back to the Templars , Crusades and the Middle - East (hence the desert ) but what I find remarkable is the similarities between this and those in the initiation ceremonies of the Central Desert Area of Australia . of course, in these , it is not symbolic .... its your very life that is dependant on this process and knowledge .
