  2. Shinto ryu

    Shinto means ' the way of Gods' so it is applicable to many things . Shinto , in the religious sense is an abbreviation based on 'shen' , which is roughly translated as 'spirit' , but more correctly (for the Japanese) as 'kami' . 'Kami' are different from what a gaijiun might conceive as 'spirit' or 'gods' . This one , apparently, farts a lot ;

    Do you have an interest in Japanese sword Mr Bond ? or is it the other weapons ? Or Gunbai-Heiho ? ( which was a very useful art to me when I was engaged in a long court case against the government (yes, I won, twice .... they wanted 'best out of three', apparently, after I won the first one ) here is the founder of the tradition I am involved with ; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matsumura_S%C5%8Dkon (although we dont practice Jigen-ryu style sword - that is specifically for battle ) It passed down the generations - son, grandson ,nephew, the last who died without a heir in 2007 - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nishihira_Kosei Unfortunately, being a family tradition / style , that meant it ended there . No one can pass it on, so we are the last in the tradition.

    and sometimes .... even before Man 'discovered' fire ... fires could even start themselves !
  6. the question that haunts me

    I think there might have been a little bit of smoke around before Man discovered fire Karl ... or are you going to blame all that on Man too ?

  8. the question that haunts me

    The same thing happened here ... many people rushed to support the idea that the Australian Aboriginals hunted out our past megafauna ... gobbled them all up they did ! Those irresponsible savages ! " In recent years this has begun to change. Humans arrived sometime around 50-45 thousand years ago, but it is increasingly clear that many or most of the megafauna had disappeared before humans arrived. Times of peak cold are known as glacial maxima (times of peak cold and aridity), but of the 90 or so extinct species of megafauna around 50 are not known from fossil deposits younger than the Penultimate Glacial Maximum (approximately 130 thousand years ago). Other species disappeared about 50 thousand years later, but still long before the arrival of the first Aborigines. At most 14 and as few as eight species of now extinct megafauna clearly overlapped in time with humans. At localised levels, too, there is mounting evidence from specific sites that a staggered, stepwise extinction was well established long before humans made an appearance. There has never been any direct evidence of humans preying on any now extinct megafauna anywhere in Sahul – or even evidence of a tool-kit typical of big-game hunting hunter-gatherers. Typical Karl ploy ! He cites the mammoth, yet with no valid ref. Not only that, this issue has been in contention for years, he just chose one side of the views to support his lame ideas, ( However, as research goes on : " The conclusion is that the mammoth steppe was much more dominated by herbs than grass during the last ice age. This may have had an impact on large mammals. A herb-dominated diet is far more nutritious than a grass-dominated one. The study also shows that when the last ice age ended and the much more humid interglacial period began, the plant composition on the Arctic tundra changed. "The herbs then became less dominant, and grass took over", says Per Möller. The researchers believe the less nutritious food may have led to fewer animals surviving in the area. According to Per Möller it is conceivable that this process has been a major contributing factor to why many of the large mammals became extinct about 10,000 years ago. So far, the scientific community has believed that the mammoth steppe was completely grass -dominated, an idea that was based on analyses of pollen in soil samples. However, the vegetation composition as shown by preserved DNA in the frozen soil gives quite a different picture; the new ability to analyse the plants' DNA residue is thus highly interesting to researchers, including Per Möller. " Read more at: http://phys.org/news/2014-02-dna-reveals-clues-mammoths-die.html#jCp ) ..... and then ignores the other valid points bought to light by posts here .

    here is a 'lens' ; take ore (earth ) , blast it ( fire) and you get a 'blank' (metal ) , hammer the metal on an anvil ( earth ), quench it in trough (water ), pump the bellows (air ) put it back in furnace (fire), hammer the metal on an anvil ( earth ), quench it in trough (water ), pump the bellows (air ) put it back in furnace (fire) ... continue in cycles = sword ( strong metal fortified by all elements )

    Wait up ..... NATO has a theologian now .... and he is capable of divine intervention ? And his divine intervention has changed the basic laws and logic of maths ???? Wow ! I better brush up on my geopolitics ! It was nothing like this last time I looked !
  16. Man, is this guy messed up ! especially @ 6.40 !
  17. yeah, I seen that one before. It makes good points . Especially about training partners One must differentiate between 'art' ( and practice and especially that beast ; 'demo' ) and real situation. I do this : demo on art of knife defense .... everyone ; " Ohhh ... ahhhh ... wow ! " me : " okay thats enough, lets get real ; Jay , take the tanto and come at me . " He does ; I run out the open gym back doors, Again ; now J is between me and the doors, he moves towards me I retreat ... up against the weapons rack ... I grab a sword . Again; he tries to cut me off from both exists and drive me to the side, I keep away and he forces me towards rows of plastic chairs ... possibly a good move .... except I pick one up and motion to throw it at him ... I have another 30 chairs there ....
  18. yeah .... with a few arts under your belt and a bit of 'kumbana' (combinations of the various arts techniques ) one eventually realizes there is 'one art' ... that changes a bit depending on weapons used. I have seen some winning moves in medieval battle that looked like they came from Aikido - we all got two arms and legs ... and the rest, the same .... they move in the same manner for most of us . Guys at training often dont get things , the wrist isnt held right (as shown above ) , movement is wrong , etc .... one guy gets it, but he has good background in tai chi - good flowing movement and co-ordinated body power . Woman that comes from kendo back ground seems flummoxed "How can I remember to do all those things at once ? "
  19. Depends what you want them for . If its sound, you test by sound, but you could be testing a bunch of elcheapo ones . You might have to rely on the salesperson a bit , but that can be dodgy , often they know nothing about them. Maybe try to get an old antique instead of one from the modern ' mass produced ' market. That can be tricky too . Or make one
