On the nature and utility of 'goal posts' in meditative and energetic practice
Taoist Texts replied to Wilhelm's topic in General Discussion
Yes it could be worse. But the issue is not the money. The issue is the goods, the subject matter of the talking and writing. The issue is what exactly we sell: is it good or is it evil. I did not know who he was until today;). From the fountainhead of all knowledge of course heh, like father like son. its a family biz -

Exactly. Of course there is. As is with Buddhism and with any other congregation. And their single crucial fault is the delusion of shifting the goalposts. Like i said we are very much on the topic. The very first goalpost in any teaching is to be a reasonable sane decent person. The moment we delude ourselves and say a teacher can be crazy, an addict, a seminar-peddler - yet have attainments then we deny the very first goalpost. Naturally the rest of the goalposts go out of the window. -

oh i will, lets name them and shame them yes but see whats interesting. the tradition did not disown him. in fact the tradition still venerates him right? does not that taint the tradition? And of course i am an outsider and will stand corrected if the facts are different and the conclusion is illogical. -

well i drink only on weekends and i am a master of my domain. I think we are still very much on topic. So please could you dwell a little bit on how an alcoholic sex fiend can be a buddhist or a taoist, let alone some kind of a head honcho in the teaching? Thanks;) -

So in tibetan buddhism black is white and a rapist is a buddhist and an attainment is being messed up. This proves that the Tibetan "Buddhism" is completely messed up. I knew it was messed up, i just did not know by how much. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doublespeak -

I believe my reasoning process to be the same for the both: 1. any thing exists for me if it passes one test of being experienced by me with my 6 organs of senses (the 5 plus the mind). 2. And a thing does not exist if it does not pass two tests: A] it is not being experienced as above . B] it cannot exist according to my logical judgment -

yes thats true, one of the moon's attributes is radiating the light it is the both of these arguments plus the logical reasoning as to why telepathy cannot exist in our reality for the immortality, as for any other concept i do not need empirical evidence to know if it exists or not. All i need is my own subjective feeling that immortality is possible personally for me. And indeed there is such a goalpost in the process, it is called 'the body still on the earth, the soul is already in heaven'. we can always move to my PPD -

i think yes it always does. unless you have examples of other terms the key word is to occur. a light occurs. telepathy does not. arts do not change the reality. they change us. But those are completely different things. A consensus is what a bunch of amateurs on the web agree on. The process is what a wise and kind master says in a 800 year old book. I am in agreement with him while disagreeing with them. There is no consensus between the three of us. Amateurs exist because of the reality of the human condition: ppl are born with a different karma. Very few of us have what it takes to become masters. The rest of us simply does not have what it takes. Its not just a matter of ignorance. The amateurs are hardwired to actively reject the true method. Instead, they are hardwired for fantasies and materialism. -

it is. if a person first sees a dim light it means his qi is not mature yet but he is on the right track. the literal meaning of the words. light is light. either it is there [dim or brilliant] OR it is not. But light does not mean a chair or an apple or a wisdom or awareness and what not. If someone 'alternatively interprets' a simple word like light then he is not a reasonable person. i think i understand what you want to say. You think that if everybody agrees on a neidan method then probably it is a valid method and vice-versa . Because if everyone agrees on grass being green then its a fact right? But you see 'our arts' are the absolute opposite of groupthink. If everyone agrees on something then it is a falsity. Consensus is a big bright red flag. Our arts are very, very exclusive. If I think like everyone does - then I will end up like everyone does. Hence the saying 'amateurs are as numerous as the hair on a cowhide, masters are as few as horns on the cow's head'. well maybe halfway. I respect her for her dedication and kindness and whimsy but as to her training process : she is correct on spontaneous movement, use of sleep, generating lights. On the rest of the process we differ. That said she is probably one of the mere two or three serious practicers here. On texts we disagree as well. Hmm this one is a head-scratcher because you apparently believe that telepathy exists and i believe it does not. And you apparently believe that a delusion must be experienced to be determined. While i on the other hand need only a glance at the man or a couple of words from him to infer that he is not reasonable. So finding a common ground for this discussion is problematic - but welcome on my side. -

If these were metaphorical/not-literal then the reader would not know what the description means so who would read a useless book? Why would any one write a useless book? Obviously the goalposts are literal. Nothing. First of all such validation is useless. If the book says at some point i will see a white light then either there is the light or there is not. What is there to validate? Second of all if a teacher telepathically knows what is going on in the mind/body of his student then they both are deluding themselves. Same for the mutual body fluids tasting. Your goalposts are your responsibility only. But thats the thing with literalness. There is nothing to interpret or to move. Either the white light is there or it is not. A reasonable person would not and cannot lie to himself. Unfortunately 'our arts' attract a very significant percentage of unreasonable persons. And there is no reasoning with them. -
they do. to put it mildly i would not persevere with qigong. but you can learn simple sitting or standing from youtube. those are much more useful than any qigong.

-
no no, all good. you just confirmed what i suspected. thanks;)

oh wow. what is it?
-
So...is this teacher's lunatic gibberish an isolated incident or it is par for the course on the entire spiritual marketplace?
-
this is surprisingly accurate! Well if it is underway then i would say it is necessary for its participants since they enjoy it. And joy is necessary for the whole world. Oops, you did that again! Believing that learning the Dao is the same as learning a mundane skill is the foremost trap for a practicer. Once he falls into it he will only dig himself deeper. In fact learning the Dao is a complete, 180 degree opposite of learning a skill. Daodejing 48 says so.
-
oh i am biased against any skill. any skill is a dead end. thats what the classical text says https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ars_longa,_vita_brevis a skill is a literal dead end
-
this is exciting. why not in a nutshell? thats true appreciate it
-
hmm so cultivation is very much like learning a mundane skill. and not just any skill. its like learning a competitive televised sport. with a partner a judge and spectators. interesting;)
