Had a feral imposter cat that looked exactly like our black and white queen. It was only when my wife spotted three cats in our kitchen that we eventually realised we had an imposter who was gleefully eating it's way through our cats kitty feast.

Argumentum absurdum - or something like that. I have enough bother with English.

Chuckle : chuckle. :-) That's not really a very good argument Mr Stosh even though it's funny.

and how do you know these unpredictable events aren't simply a figment of a conscious creation of existence and that you actually manifest the rain on your own head ?

I paraphrased it for my own clarification of your post and nothing more. Would you state that this is fact or feeling ?

The Chinese factory workers are working for themselves. Unless they were forced at gunpoint to work then their conditions-although miserable-are those they chose as part of their employment contract with their hirer. We are nature, animals can't tell us anything about our nature, we are as different as chalk and cheese. We have a conceptual brain and animals don't. We can't live like animals because we are ill equipped to do so. Where an animal has fangs, strength, claws, armour, fur, we have large brains which are our only tool, without it we would be easy prey for everything else and extinct in a matter of decades, or less. We are responsible for ourselves and that's where our responsibility ends. It may encompass a value such as family and friends, but only by choice. Equally no one is responsible for us and neither should we expect it. Be neither your brothers keeper, or expect him to be yours.

Sounds similar to: 1. The universe is benevolent because it isn't chaotic, but it's neutral in every other sense. 2. People can be considered prime movers of a kind and do evil acts or good acts-they aren't inherently evil, nor good. 3. Somethings can be controlled, others cannot. 4. The success of ones achievement of values IS rewarded by the slap on the back happiness brings. :-) 5. Trick is to know where you are ? How you know it ? What you should do ? (Comfy chair/arse) :-)

To put it Monty Pythonesque - luxury. We had that, plus over flights of soviet bombers and close encounters with soviet subs. In the 1960s the Second World War was in recent memory, I played on bomb sites as a young boy. We did get bombed, we do have a living memory handed down from our mothers and fathers. Nuclear war was another kind of blitz. We had already seen V1 and V2s are understood the danger of ICBMs because the huge areas of broken masonry made it real. Then we had the IRA. We had major bombings and lived with terrorism for years, it wasn't just London, it could and did happen everywhere.

I cannot but completely agree with that sentiment.

That kind of blatent idealism and bloody revolution still abound, but the West has been poisoned by something far more insidious. It is apathy and the death of reason. It is the equivalent of an anaesthetic to numb the mind and extract the blood. It seems to me that people accept the slower blood letting as a sacrifice to the ideal of 'the common good' or 'safety' and the anaesthetic is philosophically applied. There is no need to distribute Huxleys Soma, people are willingly blinding themselves to the sacrifice they are making.

We appear willing to sacrifice for anything. The immediate thought 'dying' isn't really uppermost, it's more spike slo mo suicide. People are trying to grab hedonistic pleasure or some forms of mysticism as a counter in a world that increasingly doesn't appear to offer them real happiness nor purpose. It doesn't of course because the philosophy they which with they have been indoctrinated has been mostly about creating fearful, obedient workers and pleasure consumers. Reason isn't something politicians and crony corporations value. They prefer ignorant, frightened sheep that keep voting, buying crap and paying taxes. What's stultifying is that it appears that's exactly what the majority of the population also prefer. Mind numbing tv, tenth rate education, an obsessive compulsion to consume anything and everything regardless of cost, crap music, crap art, dumb, corrupt politicians and a media that hasn't a clue about honesty and integrity.
-
Because there is no 'reason' anymore. Without reason you have purpose, but not a directed purpose. The purpose is whatever the whim dictates. It no longer needs a reason, so just do anything you like for the sake of pleasure at any cost.

I'm not entirely convinced he wanted to be in his current position. He looks as if he is a man very far out of his comfort zone. I think he does want to make America great, but wasn't really thinking it might be him that would bear that particular burden. Neither of them are exactly bright, pretty much the bottom of the barrel. Trump all bluster, Hillary lacking any substance. Good luck America, your crooked political system has led you to a choice between shit and shite.

We have begun to fall backwards towards a new dark age, due chiefly to Emmanuel Kant and those academics and intellectuals that took up up his anti-reason cudgel with the kind of glee shown by the vandal who destroys only because he enjoys destruction and sees no purpose in creation.

That's not what I meant. Even well structured music may not appeal if it lacks the values behind it that concur with ones own values. We are listening to composer, not just his skill at composition, but the composers own character transposed onto the composition. A good artist/creator is to find within their work, they are showing themselves to us in such a way that we grasp the abstract from the concrete.

It applies more or less everywhere. I think sex is a good example of the most spontaneous of acts, primarily there is no risk of death, nor serious injury, but the act itself might not be appreciated by the partner after the event. Going back to your road journeys, you don't get in the vehicle without some knowledge of its road worthiness, nor your skill as a driver. These things don't guarantee safety. Everytime we get behind the wheel there is an increased chance of death or injury, but we calculate it's still a sufficiently low probability to make the small risk worth it. Contrast that with wing suit flying with a paraglider, or cave diving. The risk is proportionately a lot higher, but people still do those sports. Wisdom is accumulated knowledge. Knowledge is the facts of reality. I think it's more interesting to consider whim, or wishes. This is knowledge not connected with the facts of reality. It is to do anything regardless of consequence.
-
That's just a conspiracy theory.

None of your business ;-)

Could have guessed that would be your response :-)

It's got to be calculated, it isn't whim. I spent my life doing dangerous sports which had a fairly good likelihood of death. Most of the caving was done using SRT (single rope technique) and the reliance on bolting, ropes, rig and equipment is paramount. We also had to take into account past/current/future weather. We did not of these things on a calculator with wads of paper attempting to calculate the safety angle. We simply ensured our equipment was regularly inspected/replaced/maintained; that we were well aquainted with the rigging and the state of the bolt sleeves in order not to chaff the rope, nor over torque the bolts. We knew the weather over the previous few days, we had signals of high underground water levels and potential flooding by gauging river/Spring flows. We knew the day's weather forecast. We knew if the ground had been baked hard indicating flash floods. We did the cave and we're always safe, but we knew of reckless people that ignored the safety aspect and got creamed, drowned, or needed to be rescued. We were in no way over cautious, but we knew the limits, experience had allowed us to make an instant calculation. Sometimes we would drive over to the dales and decide to abandon the trip.

Are you voting for Clinton ? an independent, or none of the above ?

I think it's deionised water, but got confused with denatured alcohol. In recent years I've become quite concerned about this labelling and tend to buy premixed coolant in preference.
