I'm one of the Tibetan Buddhists (there are more then you think, specially among westerners) that see Tantra as neither Buddhist nor Hindu Being from the West makes it a bit easier to look beyond the Tibetan or Indian cultural dress of tantra without "loosing face" Of course on many levels Buddhist and Hindu lineages of tantricism are different - no doubt about that, the teachings also differ but there are several similarities in both lineages, even some lineage masters are the same F.e.: Tilopa appears to be a lineage master of Kashmir shivaism and source of the kagyu lineages simultaneously Goraknath one of the shaivaite natha masters also is cited as one of the "Buddhist" 84mahasiddhas by the Tibetan Jonangpa Taranatha Also baffling are certain places in Nepal like Pharping - there Guru Padmas cave is right next to the lotus feet of goraknath, both masters practiced tantric sadhana there (Nepal was always strongly connected with the Nathas, and Indian/Tibetan Buddhist Siddhas- Goraknath is said to have founded Nepal, many Nepalis even say the country is in such big shit because after the assassination of the king+family the bond with the nathas was almost extinguished) So for me Tantra is really its own transmission and I think that transmission is much older then Buddhism or Hinduism as we know them today I also read Dr. Svobodas books on Aghora and you know its so similar it would be outright weird to not think there is something beyond Hinduism/Buddhism going on in India etc. Also in the books Vimalananda reportetly said that the nathas are nothing other then aghoris And aghoris look a lot like some Buddhist Siddhas to me - naked living in charnel grounds - eating out of kapalas, preferably with some fresh brain in there etc. Remember tsangyong heruka? Reportedly the reincarnation of milarepa - he ran around dressed in human flesh... I don't say to be a proper tantrika you need to behave like that, I mean I guess for me its better to be a baby tantrika who isn't to concerned with dualistic ideas like filthy/clean. I hope I don't cause misunderstandings when sharing these weird things, anyway its part of high end tantra to be totally beyond worldly conventions (that's reserved for the siddhas of course who have that kind of realization) Anyway there are still some people on both sides that say tantra is either Shaivism or Buddhism but that's fine with me, also it doesn't really alter the power of the transmission

Khyentse Rinpoche wrote: The passing of Chatral Sangye Rinpoche marks the end of an era. Suddenly we have lost a sentry who was zealously guarding the Buddhadharma in general, the Vajrayana in particular, and especially Tibetan Buddhism and the Nyingma lineage. The word chatral has the connotation of an ascetic yogi who abandons all. Usually names are given as labels. But in the one now passing into paranirvana, the name Chatral was not just a label. He was the epitome and embodiment of what the word chatral really means. In his long lifespan of more than 102 years, this is a man who did so much, associated with some of the greatest beings, and became master of the masters, including teaching and becoming the guru of the very man who found the 14th Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso, who was known as Yongzin Gyaltsab Radreng Rinpoche. Yet this same man can barely boast a monastery, institute, or dharma centre. Around him, paraphernalia like gold-plated roofs and thrones are nowhere to be found. He was a Chatral in the true sense. But make no mistake: Many lamas like myself, who make the loudest noises, display the most jarring images, and travel every inch and corner of the world, have achieved next to nothing compared to this man who appears never to have done anything except for keeping his meditation mat from ever getting cold. And if he did manifest in action, this is the man who spent 99.99% of what he had rescuing the lives of animals. So for ignorant beings like us to try and express the great qualities of this enlightened being is like trying to measure the depth and width of the sky.1918625_1275297055829106_4436139143986700537_n And yet if I may express one thing from the little I have known of this man it is this: The Buddhadharma has so many challenges, including all the charlatans who do outright damage to the image of the Dharma. These may be overcome by those who seem to do the right thing, who appear serene, proper, and moral, and who never upset anyone. But that often leads us into another challenge that is harder to overcome. Because in doing things correctly, properly and morally, and in bearing the burden of not upsetting people, one ends up being the victim of political correctness and becoming hypocritical. In my limited life I have seen very few anti-hypocritical beings, and he was one of them. He meant business, there was no negotiation, and of course he never traded one single word of the dharma for money. Time and again, he refused to bow down to the mighty. He made a lot of us hypocritical beings shudder. Just knowing he was alive and breathing somewhere between Siliguri and Pharping made our hearts quake. Even though we never got to see him, especially towards the end of his life – and I myself was refused an audience 20 times or more – his mere presence on this earth shattered hypocrisy. To express our homage, veneration and supplication, may we disciples of this man keep in our lives the practice of freeing living beings, such as releasing fish, and especially so within this month.

Dear apech, I just had a plain dosa, vada and two southindian coffees at the Indian coffeehouse in Pondicherry While eating there I remembered Gandhi being shot and dying with the words "ram, ram, ram" on his lips Its a special place India and it made some interesting human beings Happy western new year - I tried to be less silent

My two cents: Dzogchen is self secret so its not a problem to discuss it online, unless you want to realize it Ekajati has only one eye, still she is better at tango then all of us here. I do hope that didn't make any sense and contributed nothing

I can't really say how much I'm humbled into silence by nagarjunas enlightened mind!

RigdzinTrinley replied to Wells's topic in Buddhist Discussion
I agree with all of this apech, totally 100% My point is that without the correct view whichever method a practicioner uses won't cut through the samsaric construct The Tibetan example is "throwing stones at a target in total darkness" Maybe the practicioner can hit the target. probably he or she will just randomly through stones into the dark not hitting the target. With the correct or pure view - its like throwing stones at a target with the aid of daylight, at least you know what the target is and where, and you also can know directly when you hit it and when not Method without wisdom is poison says the Bodhisattvacharyavatara -

Tsongkhapa was a highly realized being who interpreted nagarjuna in a very unique way, I wouldn't judge his understanding because I'm simply in no position to judge I posted this quote because without the correct "view" (darsana) discussing dzogchen or tantra, or why and how the one is higher then the other is nothing but exhausting; in my opinion I mean. -

The victorious ones say that emptiness Undermines all dogmatic views, Those who take a dogmatic view of emptiness Are said to be incurable. Root Verses of the Middle Way, XIII, 8 This beautiful verse of nagarjuna thought me to avoid exhausting myself trying to tie knots into the vast sky of pure dharma -

Get transmission by chogyal Namkhai Norbu Rinpoche (look for a webcast-transmission if you can't receive the transmission in person) He transmits a part of one of the 18root dzogchen tantras of the upadesha series (the union of sun and moon tantra) This part Rinpoche is teaching is a vajrasong that harmonizes the vajrabody (nadi, prana, bindu) and helps to integrate body/speech/mind Rinpoche had several dreams and visions where he revealed a special way to chant this vajrasong Its mind blowing - find an old student of Rinpoche to teach you "how to" -
I would say there is unhealthy doubt and healthy doubt The healthy doubt like "what is this" or "is this really happening?" Etc. is very important I think

Pranayama for Brain Fog & Excess Wind
RigdzinTrinley replied to daojones's topic in General Discussion
Usually I would say that pranayama should be studied under supervision. That's especially true in the dzogchen tradition I follow. Thesr teachings are usually given after completing ngondro or after finishing at least the first half You find teachings on an excellent practice involving breath and visualisations to purify the winds in longchenpas shingta chenmo - his auto commentary on "resting in the nature of mind" To practice these teachings you need have received a tantric empowerment including the third empowerment (wisdom empowerment) And have the transmission for the text and instruction as well as guidance of an authentic lineage holder. Why do I say all this? Not to bore you but to make you understand that actual pranayama is to help you realize your true potential not just to feel better and function better in the world That being said I think that some Indian yogic traditions teach more "outer" forms of pranayama and kumbhaka together with asana practice to prepare for the "inner" pranayama involving the winds directly I still think its not so good to learn these things from a book, dvd , YouTube or a wellness type western yoga teacher These teachings are profound and have profound effects if done with the correct philosophical understanding of the different yogic traditions and the right motivation Not just to feel better or get temporal relief for a certain health problem but focused on enlightenment for the benefit of all beings Anyway Google tsokny Rinpoche + gentle vase breathing Learn to be comfortable with "less" breathing - Wind problems usually come from excess thinking and breathing But that is hard to say online - so please find an authentic teacher of an authentic yogic lineage All the best
