Sorry about that. Thought FP practitioners may find it especially interesting since FP has such an effect on people and animals that are close, what the effects may be in a mass FP meditation. Should have added that part. I have noticed during the lock down that the extra quiet and calm (mostly) environment around me is helping my FP, I'm more in tune with the slow movement and inner calm. Less car pollution coming through the windows is a bonus too.

Robert Peng's Yi Jin Jing is in another league, compared to what you commonly see. His has the proper reverse abdominal breathing and levels of intensity that the others don't have. This is the only version that I have seen, that actually really applies the bone marrow washing and tendon changing classics of Bodhidharma (the way Dr. Yang Jwing-Ming teaches). His Shaolin Sifu taught him this version. The instruction is very detailed. I've only followed up to the first 4 forms to try it out. To give an example there is this form where you stand similar to "hugging the tree" standing meditation, then you relax a little in that posture with normal breathing and then you start doing reverse abdominal breathing and really push the air out or your lungs at exhale, while you push your arms away, back and forth, with three sets of intensity, every time tightening and relaxing the muscles, joints, fascia and organs (according to the specific form). After doing couple of rounds= buzzing all over arms, chest and lungs (this form is focused on strengthening the lungs). You also use some intension and imagination, like your really pushing against something heavy. This practice is supposed to make you stronger on many levels. It's a Shaolin foundation practice that is supposed to make weak monks, not so weak anymore. I don't like many of his practices, but this one is special.

The Ergo21 Meditation Cushion has helped me sit for longer than 3 other meditation cushions that I have tried. It's a flat cushion with pockets of liquid on top of foam. A bit expensive at $127 (excluding shipping), living in South Africa this is expensive for me at least. Their thin shoe insoles are also nice. Hi everyone. Just a short update on my practice. I recently restarted FP practice. I'm getting into the "flow" of it again. Currently doing Vol 1 first 2 meds and Vol 2 first 2 meds. By the end of the week I intend to go up to the full 18 rounds of BTB (legs are getting stronger with practice). Standing med 1 creates a lot of body shaking and heat. Today I will add Vol 2 med 3 (used to be my favorite "basic" seated med). I'm doing standing practice in morning, after some yoga practice and seated FP in afternoon. If I do standing practice in afternoon, I usually struggle to fall asleep. Already my right shoulder, that's been giving me problems for many years (heavy school bag, tennis from grade 0 - 12 + professional training, some rifle target shooting and having my computer mouse elevated to high, causing me to lift my right shoulder for years), have improved so much during these few weeks. Great stuff!

Hi everyone. I was last here in 2017. Had some problems in life come up (brother passed away from long battle with cancer) and some body discomfort in some areas that I have since improved. It was my 32nd birthday few days ago. There is a new urgency in my life to do things that are worth while. Today I started FP again. Felt good. Happy to be back.

Hi Qube. Welcome to thedaobums and Flying Phoenix. Im also South African. Been practicing FP vol 1&2 on and off (mostly off) for couple years. Had some problems in life come up and some body discomfort in some areas that I have since improved. Will soon start practicing again and join the discussion.

Thanks for sharing these videos with us Sifu Terry. I now understand what "move at the speed of a shifting sand dune" truly means. Doing one round of BTB in 5min = 90min for 18 rounds! Now thats some deep absorption!

Hi everyone, I have a question for Sifu Terry, but anyone can respond if you know the answer. I know we are not supposed to sinchronize our breath with the movements, but during my practice of the 1st basic seated meditation, when I start turning the palms, I like to inhale, while hand palms are facing each other and then turn the palms when I exhale. It just so happens that my breath rate corresponds perfectly with the slow turning of my hands. I dont conciously have to think of my breathing, I just let it happen on its own (when I always start with an inhale, before beginning with the hand movements). I have tried to disconnect the breaths from the hand movements, but something feels off and my "rhythm" feels unnatural if that makes sense. The energy effect of exhale corresponding with turning the palms feels stronger, where I feel more of the "brain washing" effect. Maybe this is just all in my head LOL.

Marijuana has its uses, just like all sacred plants, but I would never advise anyone to do meditation after smoking (I personally have never done this). Marijuana intencifies/amplifies everything, so you would have to be an expert "driver" on the path of meditation or do it with close supervision from a Tantric master. PLEASE DO NOT mix sacred plants with meditation, you would be walking on the razor's edge and risk mental problems or worse! Sifu Terry has stated on here that no one should mix substances like Marijuana or alchohol with FP practice. What may help meditation in general, are the much safer Chinese tonic shen herbs or Indian satvic herbs, like Reishi (my favorite), Gotu Kola, Shizandra or Tulsi to name a few. These are good for health in general and boosts immunity and stress relief. Even with these I would advise using some caution because the added effect may be too much (depending on how much you take, when you take it and the quality of the herb). btw: "one of the highest spiritual masters/meditation teachers in the history of this planet" Serious?

Hi, Aeran I recently started practicing FP after a long time not practicing, but Basic seated #3 was my favorite meditation at that time because it was so nice to do and I went deeper with that meditation. I also experienced swaying in my torso, but mine was more a slow clockwise rotation, with amazing ralaxed state of mind. According to Sifu Christopher Lee Matsuo this has to do with the spinal energies (especially the sushumna energy channel), this spinal rotation is part of his Kwan Yin magnetic chi gong, to awaken the energy in the spine, leading up to the brain. I have also experienced this in the past when entering a deep marijuana induced state (sorry if this offends some people, just adding for interest's sake). I don't know if this can be applied to FP practice 100%, but this shows how powerfull a BASIC FP meditation can be!

Happy new year to all (I know I'm a bit late). During this holiday my FP practice went a bit downhill, but now I'm back into it. I want to take it slower (slower than how I used to do it few years ago, before I stopped) and try to master each med before adding the next one. At the moment I'm only focusing on the 1st 2 standing meds on vol. 1, working my way up to 15 min for "monk gazing at moon" and 18 rounds of BTB. Im starting to gain some leg strength again (yoga doesn't work your legs like chi gong does). I'm loving the practice and I'm looking forward to "monk holding peach", where I used to sway forward and back like a crazy person and "monk holding pearl" where I used to experience the most shaking and trembling in my body and legs, so much so, that the big heavy table, a few feet away from me, would vibrate on the wooden floor.

It may be that you are approaching a trance like state or very deep meditation. In Yoga there are techniques and after effects that mimic what happens to the body in a trance state, epileptic fit, seizures, time just before death. Kechari mudra (tongue rolled back), shambhavi mudra (rolling the eyes upward to 3rd eye), bandha (body locks) and psychic stiffening (where body, arms etc. becomes very stiff in meditation). These techniques help to still the mind and experience higher states of consciousness, by focusing more energy up to the brain, but all this can happen spontaneously when approaching a deep state so its probably normal. I would like to know what thoughts Sifu Terry has on this. Also does this mostly happen during seated practice?

Its called kechari mudra and its almost always done with Ujjayi pranayam (specific breathing exercise to induce one pointed focus, relaxation and meditation). You get what some call Jnana kechari mudra, where you just place the tongue at the back of the palate and then there is the Tantric one, or highest level of the mudra, where you place it in the nasal cavity behind the uvula, but there are tongue exercises that you one can do to achieve this without cutting the Frenulum. Kechari mudra according to Yoga\Tantra is to enable one to raise the Kundalini and stimulate the amrita(elixir) in the head, to drip down onto the tongue (instead of dripping down to the stomach, where the fire of digestion destroys it) so that the amrit gets transformed and purified at the Vishuddhi Chakra (throat) the yogi then goes into a deep state of samadhi. So this is done for specific reasons within a yogic system that follows a different alchemical process. I don't think its a good idea to mix this with Flying Phoenix practice, but the basic mudra would maybe be ok? I keep mine just behind the teeth when practicing Flying Phoenix.

The Golden Flying Phoenix is another subsystem of Flying Phoenix. $299 for 3 meds on whitetigerkungfu website. One of those videos done by GM Doo Way with no breakdowns, so good luck learning it. Also you can probably revive small animals with normal Flying Phoenix later on too.

Congrats Earl Grey on achieving 100 days. I will restart my Flying Phoenix practice beginning this Monday. (wanted to start weeks ago, but family problems, work, exams got in the way so I only practiced Yoga) I hope to reach a large number of days also. There is no point in doing a practice like this "half a$$ed" . Also your personal practice journal is very interesting.

Thank you Sifu Terry for correcting me. I've always thought it didn't feel quite right when I did the last exhale with tongue still touching the upper palate. Maybe now the FP energy will feel more settled when I finish a meditation. Thanks again.

Hi phanman Im also new to this forum, even though I have read most of the FP posts, I only recently joined thedaobums. As your post has been up for a few days, without a response, I have decided to give you some answers to your questions. As I've said I have read most of these 232 pages and I did practice vol 1 and 2 a few years ago (recently started this great practice again), so I will attempt to answer, but hopefully Sifu Terry or someone else with more experience can give you better advice. Yes I have to agree. This is the best Chi Kung I have ever practiced, especially when it comes to healing and cultivating energy. I've had shoulder and hip pain go away and few years ago my right kidney pain decreased and when I urinated (had urge to go to toilet often after some time practicing FP) my urine would be dark brown. It was as if FP practice was cleansing/detoxing my kidneys. I had never experienced something like this before. Yes you can practice all five in one go. You can also take a few minutes break between. You have to always end a meditation with 3 breaths and start every new meditation with 3 breaths. Yes the easiest and most consistently accurate way to do the breath % is to assign 1 sec for every 10%. Later on when you become more experienced, you can do it quicker. The way I do a full breath is with diaphragmatic breathing (expand the belly) and expand the lungs. So I start with breathing into belly and as I inhale I move upwards to expand the chest. This should be done in a smooth fashion with no holding of the breath. First practice only full 10 sec in and full 10 sec out, until you can comfortably do the 10 sec breathing, before starting the meditations with breath %. For me this was easy as I have been doing yoga pranayam for quite some time before I started with FP. After the 3 full breaths and the breath %, you just breath normally with the belly like most chi kung practices, so post natal breathing, but I believe Sifu Terry once said that you can at a later stage do reverse (pre-natal) breathing if you wish, but I'm not certain? Rather stick to belly breathing, like what is taught on Sifu Terry's DVDs. With FP you don't have to use any imagination or focusing on any particular point or energy gate. Just go with the flow and be one with the practice. Heat is normal, also other sensations. You don't have to stop having sex, obviously it is best to rather wait some time (hour or 2) before and after doing FP and also some moderation should help (don't overtax your body). A last note on breathing, I used to, in the beginning, do the last full out breath (last breath through mouth) with the tongue not touching the upper palate, but I believe you should still keep your tongue touching upper palate (behind teeth) because Sifu Terry said that the tongue must be kept there throughout the practice. Hope this helps. Hopefully others will also comment on your questions.

Hi everyone. I want to restart my FP practice. Just want to make sure. One keeps the tongue on the roof of the mouth (behind teeth) during the entire meditation, meaning during the 3 deep breaths, breath %, meditation, end 3 breaths and during the last breath's exhale, or do you drop the tongue when you are doing the last big exhale? Just asking because if I understand correctly you must exhale that last exit breath through your mouth to help seal the energy in FP?

I guess I'm going back to Flying Phoenix. I used to love Flying Phoenix. To be honest I believe it is better at healing than SYG. But SYG has some other nice things. The only 2 problems that I have with FP is that it takes a much longer time to do (2+hours), especially in the beginning 1 - 2 years, untill you progress to DVD 4, when you do the long form meditation. The other problem was that I often had trouble sleeping, because of the huge energy boost that it gave me. I used to practice it in the afternoon because I do another practice in the morning.

Yes there are many inconsistencies. Especially with the breath percentages. I really like this system, even more than flying phoenix. I haven't started the level 1 moving meds yet, but I already know there is something very special about SYG. I hope someone can help clarify what the real breath % is for the 2 standing moving meds in level 1 (and all the levels because the 2 moving meds % is the same for all 18 levels). I already know that Sifu Garry somehow put the wrong breath % for the 1st and 2nd static meds on his level 1 video: 80% 70% 30% instead of 80% 70% 50% and 80% 70% 50% instead of 90% 80% 70% 50% but then I bought the level 1 video from ironpalm.com. Its Jim Lacy's video and I have to say its nowhere near the instructional quality of Sifu Garry's videos. The 1st 3 meds are done by Lacy and the last med(long moving) is done by GM Doo Way. Now for the breath % on this video: Med 1: 3 full breaths to start 80 70 50 - 3 full breaths to come out Med 2: 3 full breaths to start 90 80 70 50 - 3 full breaths to come out Med 3: 3 full breaths to start 50 - 3 full breaths to come out (compared to 2 full breaths of Garry's level 1 video) Med 4: 2 full breaths to start 50 10 5 - ? full breaths to come out (compared to 3 full breaths of Garry's level 1 video) Meditation 4(long form moving) is done by GM Doo Way(does not break it down, just demos it). He(GM Doo Way) clearly says in the beginning "These meditations, the breathing sequence is all the same. You take a deep breath, you let it all out, you take another deep breath, let it all out, another deep breath let 50% out, another deep breath, let it all out, another deep breath let 10% out, another deep breath, let it all out and another deep breath, you let 5% out, another deep breath, let it all out and this is how we do the meditations, the movements." He doesn't say how many breaths to finish this meditation. I contacted ironpalm.com and they said you finish with 3 breaths. The video is only 17min 32 sec long. Also I wonder if it would make such a huge difference if I just did 3 breaths at the start of all these meditations? Another interesting thing is that Lacy says, with the 3rd meditation that you should keep the hand on top of the other hand at the lower belly (whatever you call the mudra, so many names for the same mudra) for 5 min, before you do the moving meditation, so do the breath %, keep holding the mudra for 5min, then start with the moving part. Its very unfortunate that we have to go through so much crap, just so that we can actually do the practice. I have sent emails to Sifu Garry and Sifu Christer Wretfors in the past and got no reply. This is such a nice nei gong and I am greatfull that Garry put this on video for all to learn from, but there is so little support and the value for money is unfortunately questionable because of the high price and lack of clarity.
