  1. Parenting

So how do you manage with structure or discipline? The thoughts are great but I am afraid the reality is totally different from 0-2, 3-5, 6-12, 13-18, at least that's my experience. One thing I learned is to practice detachment and keep in mind the difference between structure and discipline. The fact is that daily life is not as easy as we read and learn from others.

  10. Translation of the end of TTC chapter 1

I just found this: xuan: dark->profound and mysterious. Dark leads to the far depth of the ultimate truth from which life exhudes has definitely a sexual connotation as well as a cosmic significance.qa Charles Q. Wu. Thus spoke Laozi
  11. As a beginner, I can tell you it is very confusing. There is much to learn about Chinese culture to understand better those concepts that I think, correct me if I am wrong, both dao jia and dao jiao were already mentioned in the book of history of Sima Qian. Then there is a plethora of books that gets more confused when there are lineages, school of thoughts and all the western literature and forums like this where in some cases you get lost in their imagination trying to interpret or even give commentaries of the the original text.

  13. tao and relationships

I don't think you have gone the wrong way, maybe you missed the exit to your right way or missed the bus to your destination. Also, you are not lonely, if not ask a Daoist hermit what it is to be lonely. In today's world or city, we are not alone, we are surrounded by people. Love yourself, hug yourself and care about yourself, my friend.

Don't this term is related to other xuan or xuan de, xuan pin terms in other chapters? I think someone here raised the question why not origin or beginning, if I remember correctly. R. Ames, translates as obscure.

  19. It is my understanding this chapter emphasizes on moderation and not attach emotions to over indulgence and concentrate on the inner self. Embrace simplicity and not embrace superficiality in life.
  20. Why must the Dao De Jhing be translated right?

I don't understand, you say words can confuse you and still there are translation that sing to you. There are certain concepts that are hard to translate because some cultural meaning that are foreign to us but overall the message in each chapter can only be understood by the words and the message encoded. If I don't have a commentary, I don't understand the meaning of certain words and sentences. Otherwise, as someone said, you get all wrong or misinterpreted.
  21. It`s sad to look at Westerners

Why having a set of westerners? Who are they? Isn't that a generalization of all individuals who are in different sub sets in different countries and communities?
  22. CH. 67 - Three Treasures

As I read chapter 67 according to several translations the 3 treasures are: compassion, frugality and not daring to take the lead in the empire (Lau), others translate humility. My question is why the third 不敢為天下先 is not a noun like the others? Is there a reasoning behind this?
  23. CH. 67 - Three Treasures

It all depends what is the definition of kindness: it is certainly more of that maternal love. As for humility, I have the impression is a cultural trait and translators tend to use "humility" to make it easy to understand. It is my understanding that this phrase remind us the way Chinese don't brag about what they know and they will prefer NOT to accept praise or else but be modest of their abilities and knowledge. It is an act of humility that you can see in Chinese communication.
