Any simple and effective ways to stretch your muscles and gain mobility and flexibility?
Seatle185 replied to Oneironaut's topic in Daoist Discussion
I have had success with "the genius of flexibility" personally which is resistance stretching - you can do some by yourself but preferably with a partner for harder to reach things or you can also do it with pulley cords iv heard. So it is saying that the best way to become more flexible is to resist with the muscles while stretching. I dont know about others, but personally i have found this method to work better than pulling and relaxing. Here are is a site that might explain a little better the method https://www.thegeniusofflexibility.com/resistance-stretching/rfst.html I hope it helps. There is also fascial stretching which iv heard is great but have never looked far into it. I use a foam roller every once in a while to massage the fascia but i cant say weather it helps directly with flexibility or not -
Sure, on the home screen you will see it under general discussion https://www.thedaobums.com/forum/184-hindu-discussion/ Hope it helps

Alot of people have benefited from Crowleys writings. I have never personally looked very deep into crowleys works, but i know he wrote his interpretation of the tao te ching. I havent read so i couldnt say but i remember a recent interview with damo mitchell he was asked what his opinion on crowleys version was and his response was "its rubbish... complete rubbish" haha i dont know i just thought that was pretty funny. But the good thing about different translations is some people just resonate more with certain writers and they can understand it better from their perspective. Hmm. The books that i would personally recomend for taoist practice other than the i-ching and tao te ching is understanding reality and secret of the golden flower. Hopefully it helps

A book you might enjoy reading that touches on this subject is "way of the saint: the forgotten relationship between medicine, mysticism, and martial arts" by michael guen.

Tai Chi: long form vs short form
Seatle185 replied to morning dew's topic in Systems and Teachers of
I like this recomendation. Every once in a while i will experiment like this too, i like flowing the form with some music.. i think its good to keep a playful attitude too. And sometimes we will go through the form and just hold still like zhan zhuang every move. -
I dont know of any videos, but you might try searching moving dan ttien on youtube. The chen style taichi that i encountered put alot of emphesis on developing the dan tien and it can be seen moving and felt physically. Other styles were supposed to train it too, im sure .

Longmen Pai Nei Gong Book from Wang Liping
Seatle185 replied to shaq420's topic in General Discussion
Iv read through it and think it is great, but couldnt put any of it into practice myself. I think it is more like a manual for people already familiar with the tradition and who have had training under someone. Or maybe im just not smart enough to do it i dont know haha.. i think it could be of great value to me later on my path just not now -
Tai Chi: long form vs short form
Seatle185 replied to morning dew's topic in Systems and Teachers of
Here is a quote from way of the saint you might find interesting " returning home to the U.S. I put aside all my previous taiji instruction and practiced only the few things grandmaster yang had taught me. What prompted me to make this turnabout in training was a stroy i had heard in which his father perfected an essential aspect of his taiji skill by practicing only the 4 basic moves of grasp the birds tail. The real essence of a martial arts practice, it seemed, could be grasped more readily by going deeply into a short chain of moves than by practicing the entire set with only mediocre understanding." My teacher also told us that the opening and grasp the birds tail are the most important, if you can master that you can master the rest of the moves with ease. -
I agree its not something to be done multiple times a day every day like most smokers do. Your not really even fully enjoying it anymore at that point, its just a habit that you do unconsciously. The people of the past i think used it as a tool for awareness. The native americans thought of the plant in a spiritual way and had its uses. So they didnt use it in the same way most do today. Another thought is most tobacco these days is grown with all sorts of pesticides, dangerous fertilizers and then after that loaded with tons of other additives to " help it burn more even" or whatever.. an interesting thing is when people switch from smoking to vaping with high nicotine they will still go through some withdrawals, which i take to mean the other additives they add are addictive in their own ways. So i think there are good uses for nicotine but its not something to be indulged in regularly, and if you choose to administer, there are better ways than smoking.

Hello, Premature gray hair could possibly point to some more serious internal issues. The he shou wu is a good recomendation, it is good for your jing, rehmannia is also a well known chinese herb to nourish the kidneys and jing. The best idea is to talk to a chinese herbalist though because they will help you find the right formula and can recomend the right foods to help. Another thought is you might have a mineral deficiency, you could try supplementing minerals. It is thought that one possible cause of premature gray is a copper deficiency.

Hi, fasting is a great way to cleanse but also something that shouldnt be jumped into too fast i beleive. The intermittent fasting is a good idea, that is the safer one i think. Another good idea is just juice fasting, your stomach is given time to rest a bit but you are still supplying your body with energy it needs. Water fasting should be taken up slowly and cautiously in my opinion. The first one i did i just jumped into it and got very weak and sick and both me and a friend of mine actually became extremely malnutritioned over time haha..my fault though. As long as you do research and ease into it you can stay safe.

Wow that is great niko, i have seen some videos of him on youtube, and i have viewed alot of jingru's videos, the one that comes to mind is his in depth explanation of stepping. Very detailed man. Hope to study with a man of his calibre one day! I havent formally studied tui na, but i know it can be very powerful, my teacher studied medicine in shanghai and i have to agree the treatment can be a little different than some of the ones who only study in the west. More internal as you said is actually a great way to describe it. Thanks for sharing, looking forward to hearing more from you too!

Eight pieces of brocade: a couple of questions
Seatle185 replied to morning dew's topic in Systems and Teachers of
Hmm, ten sounds good? We also do the 8 pieces as a warmup with wu style here, but its never been a set number of reps, its just however many you feel you need that day. -
Hi, i was interested in lucid dreams before i even knew about qigong, and following certain actions like "reality checking" during the day helps alot. well some say that the qigong, or meditation effects the dreams , more lucidity in the day brings more into the dreams. Personally i never noticed qigong by itself to bring on lucidity, the only thing that did for me was conscious effort. i have heard there are specefic types of "sleeping qigong" practices that would work with this stuff, but i think these teachings are harder to come by (at least in my area) This thread might be of interest you. And the book "tibetan yogas of dream and sleep" goes pretty deep into the subject. And not just how to do it but why to do it. Steve kindly provided free links to files of the author in the above thread.
