How would a virtuous person act in this situation?
Aetherous replied to Subtle's topic in General Discussion
Ah I see. Suppression is no good, of course. But loving kindness shouldn't have the effect of suppression. Might I suggest...allow yourself to express (in safe ways) your frustrations...then when you feel normal, contemplate the things like: loving kindness, try to do tonglen (first on yourself, then friends, then family, then strangers who you feel deserve it, then enemies if you get to that point), pray for people in the world, try ho'oponopono, etc. Whatever method you like, if it brings you good results. But don't use those methods as ways of suppressing frustration with someone...as a way of feeling better, when you're down...only cultivate with spiritual methods when you feel normal and all problems are solved in life. In yoga they say, only practice when you're in a sattvic (pure or natural) state...not rajasic (riled up) or tamasic (dull or depressed). It's been said by spiritual teachers, that before going to practice spirituality, if you have a problem with someone you should take care of it first...and only after it's been dealt with, and you feel normal, you can finally go do the spiritual thing. Otherwise, you're simply cultivating the negativity. There's an idea that in order to get through negativity, we must give it some space and time, and basically wait for it to pass. By doing that, we're actually cultivating some virtues...such as patience, perseverance, acceptance, surrendering, strengthening ourselves, etc. Of course, if something is causing you to become negative (such as pounding on your wall driving you nuts), it's totally virtuous to stop it in a good way. When someone is doing something cruel, unwarranted, etc, such as pounding on their neighbor's walls, it's totally in line with virtue to stop them for instance by calling the cops. It would be good to try and say you don't want to get them in trouble (mercy is a great virtue), but if they do end up getting in trouble, that's on them because of their behavior. Anyway, rambling...but doing things sensibly, as a reasonable person would (rather than the idea of what a spiritual person would do) is sometimes the best way to go about things. Just some ideas for you. -

It's not hateful to get him to stop pounding on your wall. -

Tell your landlady. Call the cops. Those are good and sensible ways to not get pissed off. -

I am not counting on a shift in consciousness. "The price of freedom is eternal vigilance!" "One of the penalties for refusing to participate in politics is that you end up being governed by your inferiors." -
I love this! lol

Yup, referenced that earlier. Shady as fuck...how rare is that combination of words???...especially when The Dark Knight Rises had a blatant anti-OWS agenda (despite what they claimed). -

No hard feelings, man. Feel free to post. I was just saying that I don't want to argue...if it gets to that point, I will shut myself up. -

....I don't want to get into arguments. Do you really not understand? It's in regard to the US Second Amendment. The fact that the US is armed, is precisely why a totalitarian regime hasn't yet taken us (overtly). I posted this article earlier, which is a brief glimpse into Modern Europe's problems. In the past few days of researching all of this, I've come across numerous instances of concealed carry holders stopping violence from turning into catastrophes. There are a lot of examples, on youtube and from various news sources. So I guess, we're just not going to see eye to eye, when I believe that Americans having guns is a great thing. When I believe that if people in Sandy Hook Elementary had weapons, this wouldn't be so devastating. -

That reminds me...when I was 18/19 and dumped by a long term girlfriend, who I actually fell in love with, I was devastated. Listening to Xiu Xiu (which by all accounts can be a really screwed up group) actually helped me get through it.

Thinking of well being and being close to nature, or else almost entirely disconnected... Urban areas have light pollution, so you can't see the stars or the beautiful black of night. Totally disorienting. Then there's the lack of open spaces, the lack of forests, the lack of real dirt that you dig in and grow things. I hope to see cities somehow take care of this disconnection from nature. There has got to be a way to get rid of light pollution. Some genius will come up with it, some day. Having more open space where you can look into the distance...I think that can be possible near major cities, somehow. Integrating more living things into the city is also possible, and is already done in some areas. Urban homesteading interests me. The ability to grow organic food on your own plot, while still being connected to the electricity of city life...is great. Apartment builders could make the places a bit more person and nature friendly...

So gossiping to the entire world, and equating your son (who has problems) to mass murderers, is a solution? Naaaah! That kid needs his mother's understanding and support (not her stupidity), in addition to whatever help he can get in other ways. -

I was just about to edit that article onto the end of my post...as an example of a mother's pure idiocy. This 13 year old boy did nothing to deserve his mother saying that, "I am Adam Lanza's mother" blah blah blah. Such a stupid attitude will never help this boy with his mental problems...it will only make him worse. She should stfu and not post such things on the internet about her son, who needs her help...her understanding...her support. -

I'm hearing the argument from a lot of people...it's mental illness and antisocial behavior that causes this kind of thing. That we should focus on those symptoms, and keep an eye out for such people, because they are more likely to do something like this. Maybe so... But something that immediately comes to mind for me, is that it's this same sort of inhuman isolation-mentality which could be a major cause. Why do some people feel socially awkward, to the point of not being able to fit in at all or have any friends? Is it their fault, or the fault of all those around them who have chosen not to befriend them? Maybe these kids were outcast (not completely by choice) by the type of person that can't handle someone being different and kind of odd. Maybe they were IGNORED by these types of people. Maybe they got strange looks, and were avoided like the plague. I've seen these things happen in schools I was in. Case in point, is that his own brother apparently didn't speak to him at all for 2 years. The one who pulled the trigger was one person. He alone, did what he did. But reading about his life, from a bunch of different sources (such as people who went to high school with him) I just get the impression that nearly everyone in our culture is to blame for creating such monsters. Did anyone get out of their little clique for a second to talk to him, ever? Did anyone try to be a friend...not in a condescending way, to hopefully prevent someone from turning into a crazed killer...but because they saw someone who wasn't comfortable in that community and wanted them to feel like they belonged? Did anyone stand up for this kid, if he was being bullied? His parents...were they understanding, or harsh and stupid? One person pulled the trigger, but hundreds of people helped make this person who he was. -
I agree...that there is a middle ground between the two points of view, which is reality.

Hello there. I don't believe in "garbage in = garbage out". Fake christians attempted to shove that garbage down my throat as a child, and I promptly spat it out. Just for everyone's information, that doctrine is not in line with the actual religion...but I won't go into that here... Our decisions determine whether we are becoming good or evil. Our intelligence and will determine it. Our contact with other spiritual beings determines it. They say that an accomplished spiritual practitioner can be bitten by the most venomous snake, and the poison will turn into healing nectar. This might be literally true...but it also represents that for some people, being exposed to negativity simply increases their positivity. They totally transmute the evil into good. In the midst of darkness, they shine even brighter. If "garbage in = garbage out" were true, then our world would have self destructed a long time ago. Thankfully, there were conscious people (those who aren't simply empty processing machines for garbage) living who maintained balance. I'm of the opinion that good people are unafraid of evil...they willingly live in the midst of it, in order to change it. They do not run away from it, or point fingers saying it's garbage or evil...saying for instance that a certain kind of music is a mantra that will turn a conscious person into an agent of Satan. Consider a bodhisattva...it's said that they descend to the hell realms in order to help others. Do you think that such a person is afraid of ANY heavy metal music (or whatever other music that's considered evil)? I don't. Consider the tragic events of this past year. Those of the newage LOA crowd might say, "lets not look, so that we will not be cultivating negativity". Avert your eyes! But...how can you ever repair what's broken, if you are unaware of it? To be a light, means to look directly into the darkness.
