Thanks for answering. So far then It would seem, according to this analogy, to be entirely random.

Thanks but not really answering my question. In your analogy we would know how and why the new candle got there and how the contact was made. In my question this whole area is (it appears) a complete blank. Any ideas @Cheshire Cat

I do like this term "sensory metaphor". In one way it does tend to simplify a phenomenon that many of us have experienced whilst simultaneously opening up a whole new area for consideration.

Over time I have come across a few references to the idea of God being reconcilable with the Dharmakaya. I recall one was during a talk by a Quaker. Any thoughts on the subject?

The capital S was used as part of the title only and did not occur in subsequent posts. ...the anatta teaching is not a doctrine of no-self, but a not-self strategy for shedding suffering by letting go of its cause, leading to the highest, undying happiness. At that point, questions of self, no-self, and not-self fall aside. Once there's the experience of such total freedom, where would there be any concern about what's experiencing it, or whether or not it's a self? ©1996 Thanissaro Bhikkhu https://www.accesstoinsight.org/lib/authors/thanissaro/notself2.html I am afraid phrases such as "most teachers" do not really cut it for me. It is the debate not the stats that I find interesting.

My only Robert Heinlein read is Stranger in a Strange Land. A wonderful book.

Some elaboration would be very welcome.

I would like to add another question to this. Are no-self and non-self the same thing?
-
It is done @rideforever

Hi Things have got more than a little 'off post' but are very interesting. Enough for more than one new post. I will start one on the 'self', does it exist?

This painting by James Tissot shows the crucifixion scene as viewed by Christ. I am not a Christian but I found this to be very moving.
