or maybe we could go to the Buddhist forum and ask, "what is the sound of one hand clapping", anyway for some reflection's on your question awhile back there was a very long string of posts on the subject of non-duality and duality which I'd suggest as someplace to hash ideas out....

Why âBeyond consciousnessâ is a misunderstanding
old3bob replied to dwai's topic in General Discussion
SatGuru says, the Self knows the Self by the Self. -
if you are willing to do anything try repeating St. Francis of Assisi prayer 50 times a day... Lord, make me an instrument of your peace: where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Siddhis in Patanjaliâs Yoga Sutras - Vibhuti pada.
old3bob replied to dwai's topic in General Discussion
My take: The highest knowledge of mind is still of the mind, Self is not of the mind yet it knows the mind for what it is or can be boiled down to, namely a thing or of things, and to know that in a non-regular way of knowing is of great benefit in all worlds being that there is freedom of Beingness in said worlds through the important actions (of Self through Guru) namely compassion, inspirational sharing, helping and uplifting for those caught in suffering or not yet free. (with the Upanishads being revealed and given as inspiration from Rishi's as one major example of same) -

I would say specialist words are not an end all solution; whereas agreement and understanding on the meaning of various words can go a long ways. Granted some words in some languages have certain vibrational and or what could be mystical type of power and are not to be misused or misapplied. Btw in reading the Upanishads one will see a large S used for Self-realization, thus in reference to the Self. The Self can not be nailed down with the powers of the mind, (or intellect) not unlike the saying about how the "Tao can be talked about, but not the eternal Tao." (Chp. 1) -

Not really if we look further, "Advaita Siddhanta (Non-dual perfect conclusions) aka Suddha Saiva Siddhanta" differs from the pluralistic schools of Meykandar and Aghorasiva. -

so it may have sounded to you but while we were bouncing concepts around with some crossover, yet I also meant more along the lines of Saiva Siddhanta being of the lineage that taught Patanjali and other Rishi's. (and not the pluralistic schools of later times) -

I'd say that we don't have to accept that they are ultimately different, for one is a potential while the other is realized potential, granted that in the eye of transcendent Siva there is no differential but in the relative eye of the aspects of Siva there is a differential...not unlike there is a difference in the first and purest prana springing from the Self and the last guna of the dense earth. An oak seed must be in a dark moist covering of earth to first sprout and then grow up into a great oak reaching for the sun. (and also producing new seeds) We could also consider something along the lines of the following quote, "Dipolar theism, according to Charles Hartshorne, understands God as both absolute and relative, abstract and concrete, eternal and temporal, necessary and contingent, infinite and finite. The being of God does not exclude but rather includes the being of the world...." -

"...the one who becomes the universe at the same time that he exists beyond the universe."" thus pointing to a "who becomes" via an evolutionary unfolding or fulfillment if you will of their consciousness. Not unlike the Indian metaphor of the water lily rising above and from the watery mud and unfolding itself further into the air and sunlight... -

"This is Ĺiva as the absolute Consciousness that is both immanent and transcendentâthe one who becomes the universe at the same time that he exists beyond the universe." Siva does not reject or imply the immanent as delusional...only incorrect perception of the immanent may get delusional... -

Btw ..."Prana springs from the Self" (and all the rest) Chandogya Upanishad, thus there is no disconnect or illusion per se only incorrect perception. Regardless of what some yogi's may say Sat Guru has some siddhis used as tools to do their work, including transmission/synchronization which is important. -

what is the potential or real benefit of any evolution...and what limitations can be overcome? -

old3bob replied to dwai's topic in General Discussion
In the Upanishads (given as revealed teachings from Self realized Rishi's) there are not a multitude of different versions of "Self", there is just one Self in all...evolution of soul is the great purpose of life but such evolution does not apply to the Self. (and if it did then the Self would be subject to the forces of evolution, change and possible devolution) There is a "coming and going" spoken of in various religions - which is not yet a final merger or return which is also spoken of. (thus a point of no going back) Heaven is great but if it can be attained then it can also be lost whereas the Self already is and can not be lost, only veiled. My take anyway. -

when individual souls merge into an ocean of Spirit, those once apparently separate individuals can no longer be found in said ocean. -

Still the Self makes the choice, while a being can only prepare in various ways; with the import being that no amount of preparation can bring about a forcing of the Self, which sees all there is to be seen. -

any basic or advanced power of the mind is a tool, and a tool properly used (per dharma) is fine or normal so to speak. Thus such could be a blessing or a curse depending on said usage by Spirit or by ego. Btw. the Self is not created nor limited to or by any astral or casual body, bodies which still have relative length of existence; which relates to why even Lord Brahma, known as creator, exists for the incredibly long cosmic "lifetime". (but still "returns") Some say, "who are you, who-who are you, I really want to know..." -
I'd say there isn't a maybe about it, regarding purpose and a dharmic place for all beings, including human ones.

different subject (from my spin-off of the OP), what I meant was "spiritual" type rationalizations used to make violent war somehow sound ok, when that should be the very last resort or (defensive) action because of the great suffering involved. Many religions have used it, for instance many Christians believed it was their "manifest destiny" to offensively take over and end up committing genocide against millions of American Indians, or the Spanish and other Europeans' to commit genocide and slavery against countless south and central American Indians, Africans, and too many others to name here. And lets not forget the British takeover and plundering of India to name just a few examples of rationalized "manifest" type destinies ! (against many indigenous peoples in most of the world)

I'm aware of the "spiritual" rationalizations along that line or what I mentioned in my previous post but I don' t buy them, btw there are some Hindu sects that don't buy them either...

the very bloody battle of Hindu clans told of in the Bhagavad Gita contradicts the "not hurtful towards any being in the world" precept, granted a soldier's dharma includes violence while that of a Brahmin priest, monk, nun or other renunciates does not, so it will not work to try and be both on such a battlefield whether in action, words or thought....
