Is karma( or cause and effect ) the ultimate teacher / punisher ?
old3bob replied to kyoji's topic in The Rabbit Hole
In Hinduism it would basically be said that the eternal Self does see through the self...I don't think many Buddhists would accept that... Also in Hindusim the term "mind" is not enlightened per-se as the Self is although it may be stilled, for it is inherently dualistic which is as far as it can go.. -

listed that quote because of the near constant remarks in so many posts about "emptiness" which to me can be empty of meaning unless one knows 1st hand what it means, thus the emptiness idea can turn into a problem.. and is not unlike what Lin Yutang is trying to point out imo... -

a fine warning below: ByYutangLin "Teaching of "Non-form" indicates non-attachment to form. Misinterpreted, it is adopted as holding to absence of form. Abiding in no forms at all, one falls into the abyss of void. Only in no grasping to form or non-form lies true liberation". -

perspective should inform but what is done with the information is paramount... -

indeed, like a curse later being seen as a blessing, or even a blessing later being seen like a curse...depending on we how react to them. -

agreed up to a point but there is a purity which karma can never reach or degrade bind and thus is eternally free and deathless, even if or when not manifesting in that way. -

this big gadget is not pretty but it does make waves for surfers away from the great whites! Hopefully a future version will blend in better with a lake and not look so industrial.

I know exactly what you mean, I remember chasing after free flight model planes that were going out of sight because of lost rudder settings, and peddling my little bike as fast as I could as a kid was sometimes not fast enough to keep the plane in sight....

oh yea, I've tried my on board driving app. but it has some glitch's or I do? So instead I use google maps with fair success but even it can send one down roads you don't really want to be on! For instance I was driving all the way from the northern border of Texas to Austin in the south for the first time and also using google maps for the first time. (btw Nungali Texas is almost as big as New South Wales Australia) I asked Goggle for the shortest route which was a big mistake since it put me on little out of the way two lane back-roads. Several stretch's of those roads didn't have any towns or gas stations for what seemed like a hundred miles or more! So I'm thinking what if the car breaks down out here in the middle of nowhere, then what in the heck am I going to do with night coming on and there being almost no one else on the roads to wave down for help and there also being sketchy cell phone service! Could things go sideways like one those gory road trip movies where unfriendly locals make you disappear? Anyway nothing went wrong and I stayed on the main highways during my return trip. (which have their own set of dangers)

I used to do this but on a much smaller scale. Note how careful the guy starting the engines is, those props can do a lot of damage to fingers or a hand. Anyway it was fun, especially the stunt planes that could do flips and other tricks! We also had "dog fights" when there were two planes and two guys flying at the same time while trying to chew up the others plane with their prop.

many years ago I bought a top of the line, super VCR for big bucks. (while all I really needed was a basic model) A lot of the directions in its manual assumed I already knew the meanings of all the electronic acronyms they used to explain things, but no many were more or less Greek to me. (and there was no manual for acronyms)

I can relate to that, and the need to also remember what I read. My wife often expects me to figure out the bells and whistles of all the various gadgets which I seldom mind, but at some point it is also a shared responsibility, like doing the dishes.

we bought our very first new car in 2018 before that we had a used 2005 model. The new car has all sorts of gadgets that I have not really figured out or have disabled. I remember the first time I took the car on the highway and tried to pass someone when the brakes automatically came on, what the hell and how does that work for safety?! On a sad and tragic note we should wonder how many accidents have been caused when someone was trying to figure out a device in their car instead of having their eyes on the road.

would most Zen related teachers and students rather have the Blue Cliff records or not... would most Buddhists in general rather have the sayings of Buddha that were written down or not, and if not would Buddhism even exist and thus only amount to a passing story of an eccentric prince who disappeared into the forest? (in remote history never to be seen or heard from again) Btw. I find it interesting that according to Buddhist scripture the "awakened one" was awoken by a great celestial for need of his teachings to go forth instead of being lost in the forest.

except that the Buddha's teachings were finally written down to help anyone reading them and thus give them a handle to work with before they had such an "experiential". It's pretty much the same with all or most teachings that are written down.

Hi Lerner, That stove sounds like very good equipment and something I'll have to check out! I haven't done much with the newer types of computer related products except for getting the most basic operations out of them. (like with Win 10 and a cam, same with my smart phone) I started with the old XT-PC's and Dos 3.2 and progressed over the years to building base line Win 10 machines but without much gaming or other fancy stuff. My favorite machine is still my trusty super socket 7 board running Dos software and early Windows which really dates me ;-) (with a good dose of patience one could and still can really have fun tinkering with the vintage machines imo)
