  1. ch 3 - a totalitarian dark place?

Doesnā€™t Daoism believe ā€˜natureā€™ is ā€˜naturallyā€™ ordered? As in é“ę³•č‡Ŗē„¶ (Dao4 fa3 zi4 ran2 - Dao follows ā€˜natureā€™). ā€¦ empties their minds ā€¦ 虛 äŗ“ åæƒ xu1 qi2 xin1 And how could he possibly empty their minds ā€¦ ? I am the only one with access to my mind.
  2. Benjamin Hoff's "Tao Te Ching"

    Seems you achieved ē„” (wu2 - nothingness).
  3. Benjamin Hoff's "Tao Te Ching"

Why donā€™t you buy the book, I am curious to know why he deleted those chapters.
  4. Benjamin Hoff's "Tao Te Ching"

Anyone is free to create a new religion/philosophy from whatever is around, thatā€™s fine with me.
  5. Benjamin Hoff's "Tao Te Ching"

PWT, we did that discussion on OD.
  6. Benjamin Hoff's "Tao Te Ching"

Me thinks Hoff is not really into Daoism.
  7. Benjamin Hoff's "Tao Te Ching"

Wang B was a Confucian who tried to adapt the DDJ to Confucianism.
  8. Benjamin Hoff's "Tao Te Ching"

    Exactly.
  9. Benjamin Hoff's "Tao Te Ching"

??? Hoff uses the Wang B text, I think Wang B used a brush. So I totally fail to understand what Hoff is going on about with his pre-brush characters.
  10. Benjamin Hoff's "Tao Te Ching"

Have fun researching it. Please let me know what your findings are.
  11. Benjamin Hoff's "Tao Te Ching"

DIO picture of the Guodian text shows it was not done with a brush. Brushes caused the characters to be changed from round shapes to square shapes. E.g. see etymology ę—„
  12. Benjamin Hoff's "Tao Te Ching"

I could not find out a date for when they started to use a brush for writing literature.
  13. Benjamin Hoff's "Tao Te Ching"

That refers only to ā€œdecorative designsā€. No mention of it being used for written literature. Fact is that the Guodian was still not written with a brush.
  14. Benjamin Hoff's "Tao Te Ching"

    I couldnā€™t find any.
  15. Everyone post some favorite quotes!

Everyone dies but no one is dead. (unknown)
  16. Benjamin Hoff's "Tao Te Ching"

Did not Wang B write with a brush? In the preview Hoff says: - he translated from the pre-brush characters - he uses the Wang B text Legend has it that the brush was invented by Meng Tian (? - 210 BC) Wang B (226-249 AD)
  17. Benjamin Hoff's "Tao Te Ching"

    (From the preview) chapters deleted by Hoff: 5 36 45 58 80
  18. Benjamin Hoff's "Tao Te Ching"

Whatā€™s ā€œimportantā€ can be rather personal. My only interest is the oldest available transcripts.
  19. Benjamin Hoff's "Tao Te Ching"

Hoff talks about pre ā€˜writing-brushā€™ characters. E.g. the characters the Guodian was written in. They were not written with a brush. In the preview Hoff mentions they were written with some other implement that could easily make circles.
  20. Benjamin Hoff's "Tao Te Ching"

yes, I am giving up on this. I stick to the transcripts DIO/Henricks.
  21. Benjamin Hoff's "Tao Te Ching"

If the brush was used alongside the Guodian method, then likely the meanings stayed the same, not?
  22. Benjamin Hoff's "Tao Te Ching"

The Guodian was not written in brush (see DIO picture).
