But does it say that? This is my interpretation of the characters. 天 地 不 仁 萬 物 芻 狗 聖 人 不 仁 百 姓 芻狗 Nature is not humane, all bodies disposable; the Emperor is not humane, all people disposable. ~~~ The First Part of DDJ Ch 5 is not in the Guodian. There was a German Sinologist who argued that the word ‘Tao’ came from the Hebrew ‘Jahweh’. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Tao-Te-King-Laotse/dp/3717512463 So too did the Sinologist Abel Remusat. Some Jewish ancient artefacts were found in Honan. W C White https://www.amazon.com/Chinese-Jews-compilation-relating-Kai-feng/dp/B0006BP4LI Some say there was a Jewish settlement in Honan at the time of Laozi. Laozi (Lǐ Ěr, some say it’s the Jewish surname Li). Laozi was an archivist in Honan. That’s all I know about it (I haven’t read the books).

Nice one. That’s why the meek (those who trust in God) will inherit the earth.

The word used in the original Greek (Matthew 5:5) is πραεῖς - soft, gentle; tame; mild.
-
The NT Beatitudes are rooted in the OT Psalms. Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. (Matthew 5:5) the meek shall inherit the earth. (Psalms 37:11) those that wait upon the Lord, they shall inherit the earth (Psalms 37:9) ‘wait upon’, in the original Hebrew - ‘to bind up with’ (well … that’s what Google says, feel free to correct it @Daniel ) In this context, ‘meek’ means ‘to put your trust in God’.

CD’s first language is Chinese. Do you speak a foreign language? It’s really difficult to learn alien grammar. Thanks. I learned some new things in jail that I will use against you.- 137 replies

English uses verb conjugation (tenses) to express time. Chinese does not have any verb conjugation.- 137 replies

Just reverse the lines, easy-peasy to understand and no contradiction: moving into the centre, effortlessly leads to stillness; being still and centred, effortlessly leads to action. 動 中,帶 静;dong4 zhong1, dai4 jing4; - move | centre | carry | quiet 静 中, 帶 動。jing4 zhong1, dai4 dong4 - quiet | centre | carry | move- 137 replies

@Taoist Texts is a Confucianist, he will know more about it than me. That’s why 天命 is useful and why it was kept: a bad ruler may be chucked out.

It was created by the Zhou to justify their takeover from the Shang.

Yes, that’s right of course. The balancing of the Yin & Yang, that’s done internally. It has to be learned by diligent cultivation. And the external behaviour has to be harmonious. That’s what I too understand Laozi saying in the DDJ.
-
Some think Lao Tzu was essentially summarising the collected wisdom of the previous few thousand years. Then the DDJ was edited by various sages. Chapters 70–81 of the DDJ were not yet composed at the time the Guodian slips were copied. The DDJ was finally declared 'finished' and definitive with the Wang Bi of about 1800 years ago (the received text).

I’ll be away from the forum for about a month.

It’s like posting a video on how to swim in the water with only showing the arms, not the legs - it’s totally useless.
-
I have no idea what this means: It’s a response to “that’s basically a cop-out”, which was in response to my post:
-
Yes, that has always bothered me as well.

Exactly. One must keep the knees in line with the toes.

I saw the post before it was removed, and I’m very glad it’s gone.
