  1. Have you seen, for example, a Roman catholic church built after Vatican II?
  2. art in religion Is art being used for a purpose. Like this Styrofoam fishing fly, why would it work harder than it has to?
  3. Porch Weather

We picked this house in part because I like a nice porch To play guitar on. Born in a land of brick row houses, I'll sing on a stoop But a porch is luxury, ease, joining the chorus with the birds, Watching the world walk by. There's all sorts of pollinators out, and the Squirrels are Squirreling it up, But they never seem to let up here.
  4. Xuanpin – Mysterious Female

    Story of my life.
  5. A whistling arrow

Picked the bow up again. No brilliant improvement in form, but a more stable stance, coming from a better root. 30 pound Bear Grizzly, cedar shafts, 16 yards. Feels good to shoot again at the least.
  6. A whistling arrow

Ok, the funniest thing about archery from a self development point of view was reading this; http://nirc.nanzan-u.ac.jp/nfile/2726 It's a hilarious article by Shoji Yamada, "The Myth Of Zen in the Art of Archery", which explains that the author of that influential book was pretty willfully misunderstanding both the circumstances under which he was receiving archery instruction and the words his translator was conveying to him. b'dum bum tish. I've put the archery tackle away for the season, mostly been shooting 30 pound Bear Grizzly at hay bales at 16 yards in the backyard. In the spring I plan to debut/test a new release based on "Beautiful Ladies Hand" and other "releasy" things I'm working on within my practice.
  7. What are you listening to?

Whistling arrowheads are fun fun fun in the field!
  8. [DDJ Meaning] Chapter 1

Stilling mind reduces desires. A change in perspective Changes the mystery. It's less about understanding a philosophy Than putting time into a meditative practice. I've oversimplified but this does encapsulate My current understanding

  10. [DDJ Meaning] Chapter 1

Nothing satisfies like satisfaction. And since there is no concept of Tao, one is not needed.
  11. Which books sit on your nightstand?

Always looking for stray bits of the Silver John saga. Underrated weird fiction pitting a pure hearted folk singer against occult evildoers so of course I love these.
  12. How to strengthen the mind

What is this phobia of meditation? Most people really would be better off if they could just sit still Without fidgeting for a while.
  13. The Cool Picture Thread

I THINK the guy in the background is pre-encounter Christ. A narrative device I've seen. This is by Jim Woodring, who does Frank and manhog and all that mischief.
  14. The Cool Picture Thread

That seems to be the case.
  15. Which books sit on your nightstand?

I'm still reading books about Catalhoyuk, an archeological site in Anatolia. This one starts out with a lot about the dig team, it gets a bit "romance among the ruins" at times, which is fun.I got a hold of a 2005 hardback copy, and it's full of old fashioned woodcut style illustrations. Charming in the extreme.
  16. Regarding books...

Laozi and Zhuangzi come to mind. Much of the rest is commentary and elaboration.
  17. Malazan

My current pleasure reading is non fiction, "Religion at work in a neolithic society ", a collection of writing about the finds at Catalhoyuk in Turkey. Re read Matt Ruff's "Lovecraft Country " as an act of sheer geekery. The last novel i read before that was "The Mahasiddha Field", fantasy adventure by Dwai, who is a very active presence on this forum. I'm looking forward to the next episode in Martha Wells "Murderbot " series.
  18. Malazan

I'm haunted by Lieber's short story, "Gonna Roll Them Bones". Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser are excellent. The fantasy stories I love that seem to be vanishingly obscure are the "Silver John" stories by Manley Wade Wellman. A folk singer versus occult evil in Appalachia, so I'm absolutely the demographic for this sort of thing, but I'm surprised how hard the books are to find now.

A book I'm always happy to recommend is "The Man Who Spoke Snakish ", Estonian author Anton Kivirahk's amazing vision of a distant past. https://www.amazon.com/Man-Who-Spoke-Snakish-ebook/dp/B01FYISLJO
