  1. Dzogchen vs Mahamudra

A few basic questions that have been percolating into my coffee pot: 1. What is Dzogchen generally, other than just non-duality 2. What is Mahamudra and how is it different from, or the same as, Dzogchen 3. How does Bön Dzogchen differ from Buddhist Dzogchen
  2. How to Be Spontaneous

I've seen that spontaneity is a common theme for Zhuangzi. Like the guy that goes in the whirlpool/rapids and rides out to the other side. Been trying to put this into practice and I think it's a powerful concept. Spontaneity, however, is somewhat hard to define. It's not as if, in being spontaneous, one acts irrationally or impulsively. It's also not as if one gives up on any sort of planning or goal setting for the future. To me its more like acting and responding in the moment without attachments, though struggling to put it into words. Perhaps that is why Zhuangzi used anecdotes. Interested in others thoughts: how does one living in the modern world be spontaneous? (anecdotes welcomed 🙂)

Here's mine: there is nothing less daoist than sitting in front of a computer (or phone) and writing posts on an internet forum. : )

    Thanks! Very interesting.
  10. Dzogchen vs Mahamudra

Maybe was a misconception to think that Dzogchen part of Bön would different, since it is really just a label for the training method. While Bön practice and belief system may have different aspects, seems like the same refrain @C T mentioned would apply to it as well:
  11. Dzogchen vs Mahamudra

Super interesting and helpful. Have been reading into this and struggling to make out the difference between the two. The sentence on the Dzogchen that stuck out to me: I guess this would would be in contrast to training with mindfulness to achieve non-fixation or non-attachment to the form, with perhaps either approach leading to the same place. Maybe this metaphor works?: In Dzogchen you hold the egg with an open palm, but in Mahamudra you softly close your hand around it.

  13. My Haiku

I got the impression that some people though my Haiku was offtempo yesterday, so I wanted to briefly explain it. I had originally written a haiku saying to be careful not to slip on ice because if you do you will get hurt. Then, there was a response saying pain is merely the mind’s construction. So I got to thinking about that. While true, pain is only a construction of the "mind," so to speak, it does not mean we go out and solicit pain. We don’t walk uncarefully on ice, simply because the pain is made in the "mind". The absurd example, of course, was the trimming off of Bob’s arm. Sure the pain only occurred in his “mind”, but he lost his arm in the process. The point was that the pain is real in as much as Bob’s arm is real. Perhaps the sensation of pain itself is illusory, but what it tells us is not. Pain is sometimes unavoidable but one ought to try to cultivate harmony in life to avoid it (and not be like Bob). Apologies for the weirdness. Do very much find this forum fascinating. It seems, however, that these conversations are occupying more and more of my very shallow and continually evaporating mental faculties. Probably ought to drop off the radar for a while. This as I sit at my lunch break. Do appreciate this place. : )
