  1. I just gave the garage door guy a nice little check. I sat in my house while he fixed stuff, there was no frustration and getting my fingers bruised and greasy, no yelling and swearing, everything worked right when he was done, no mess to clean up. I grew up in a do-it-yourself house. This is fabulous; people will come do these things for you and all you have to do is give them money. I might need to get over my snottiness. I have in my head that my kids should go to college and I'd probably be very disappointed if they don't. But from a practical career perspective might be better to go to tech school and learn auto repair or electrician skills. Really it is up to them though. A lot of degrees don't qualify you for practical career opportunities much beyond file clerk. Did you know you need to have a degree to be a flight attendant (airlines don't really care which degree, but you need one)?
  2. We recently saw the movie, Lincoln, and I was thinking the same. People certainly spoke more eloquently then. Intellectualism is often looked down on now. We tune into some simple sound byte then our short attention spans zoom off to the next thing. I don't know if I completely agree either; people today have access to an incredible wealth of information and multitasking can be a useful skill. We have pretty quick access to multiple expert opinions by scanning those articles. I do agree with Seeker of Self that people's focus would greatly benefit from a cultivation practice, more time in nature too. I think people need to understand just because an expert has an opinion doesn't mean they're right and research is often flawed. Now his idea that we are less emotionally stable. What if there suddenly were no meds for psych issues?
  3. Haiku Chain

wasted, lost, forgotten come out of your shadow, man today is a new one.
  4. Homophobia is not really a phobia or fear. It is about being judgemental and hateful- same as racism and sexism.
  5. How to Pick Up Girls

My 11 year old son can pick me up; it's not that difficult. I picked up a 250+ lb. friend once, my back hurt the next day. I don't mind if you guys talk about it, pretty much a mix of being mostly amused and somewhat academically interested in the male mind, sometimes irritated and sometimes sympathetic.
  6. New Game

Something with the element of time. If I'm in the center now, then when I was in the place I was yesterday then I was not in the present center in that past period of time.
  7. How about decorating your living space? Can be an artistic endeavor in itself and include elements that can give you ongoing inspiration.
  8. yes, fight, flight, food and another f-word. Deeply hardwired imperatives for all living creatures. I don't know that our species is special. Maybe if we were created on purpose, it's a negative purpose. We seem to be pretty good at hacking up things for other species and the planet in general.
  9. So modern people think we understand everything right and obviously the Bushmen are like original primitive people who stayed behind and didn't change for 100,000 years. Genetic scientists found the Bushman's genetic sequence much more diverged from ancestral sequence then the human reference. http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/notrocketscience/2010/02/17/africas-genetic-diversity-revealed-by-full-genomes-of-a-bushman-and-a-tutu/ Most surprising of all, many of their unique SNPs are actually fairly recent developments. The Bushmen are one of the oldest human groups on the planet and you might expect their genes to reflect humanity’s most ancestral state. But not the SNPs – Schuster found that only 6% of !Gubi’s newfound SNPs matched the equivalent sequences in the chimpanzee genome; by comparison, the same positions in the human reference genome are an 87% match for the chimp one. They can’t be ancestral sequences. They must have turned up after the Bushmen dynasty diverged from other human populations, and they provide hints about the history of this most ancient of human lineages.
  10. Probably. Times have changed, wonder how much due to statistics vs. paranoia. Back in 90s Red Cross would set up donation days in gay bars and market it as a way to help people out and get checked for free. A social worker friend of mine did predonation counseling, they took some pretty high risk people.
  11. Why??? In US they test every single unit and notify donors if they do have some infectious disease that's unknown to them, which is a service in and of itself. But I'd like to understand this, we travel to Canada, if they don't test every single unit but decide it's safe based on profiling or something else, if we have some horrible trauma and need blood transfusion there I have idea better make a tourniquet and speed back south.
  12. You can brush your teeth with plain Castile soap. Some people use baking soda, but I think that's irritating- and tastes worse than the soap. Soap really not bad tasting if use just enough once you get over idea of having mouth washed out with it as punishment. Costa Rica or Belize are the Western Hemisphere countries our interpreters recommend as fairly safe, friendly and fun at least to visit. I want to at least visit, don't like it here.
  13. Spontaneous Suffocation

Cheyne-stokes respiration. That's pathological apnea of neuro origin. Don't remember all the physiological details, basically sensors in brain get out of sync and don't tell lungs to breath with good timing.
  14. ...

Love seaweed too. Roughly follow blood type diet for type A (mostly vegetarian, limited dairy), sort of old diet with no proven scientific basis, but this guy is spot on for me down to what kind of beans are fine and which ones make me feel tired and bloated and what juice is good in the morning vs. giving me a sour stomach. I do vary it seasonally and eat more meat if am training a lot. Really enjoying the thread and getting some good insights. I do think TTBs are way ahead of general population (including me) in thinking and understanding the role of the food we eat. The other day my neighbor was talking about how they are having a difficult time adapting to trying "meatless Mondays" and I was torn between thinking ok good for her for trying and seriously, so many good things to eat besides meat how can one day a week be seen as difficult!
  15. Living at peace with society...

Once ended up in a long conversation with a casual acquaintance from high school and the outcome was we both thought the other one was sort of stuck up and snotty in school, but we were both just naturally quiet and went along with our groups. We're friends now and actually have lot in common. Sort of an epiphany how my old perception of her was wrong. So I do try to be positive in making connection and expectation even though I'm really not a social person.
  16. Water Therapy

Tap water is when they take dirty water unfit for anyone, pump it full if deadly chemicals and pronounce it safe for all- quote from an old well driller. I use a water pitcher for mine and chlorine filtering shower head, but think I might start making some road trips to check out some springs.
  17. Pit Bulls, do they get a bad rap?

They are iconic old time poor people's dogs. Very loyal, strong and fierce, so old time wanderers would have them for companionship, protection, hunting and they even could pull a cart. Probably no reason for anyone to have them in our safe, ordered and carefully regulated modern society.
  18. I think if I could be out in a beautiful natural setting and have a few things to putter around and maybe create art with, some extended simple time in solitude would be living a dream.
  19. The War on Kids

Bricks in the wall. IRonic that, although home schooling has potential to be better, in reality often even worse since tends to be done by very religious and restrictive parents. Kids don't even get opportunity to talk smack with other kids about authority. And the video didn't even get into silliness of organized kids sports. Might be a lot more fun if there was maybe some mandatory light sedation for certain adults.
  20. Taoism.....lol

He said every paint drip and splatter was intentional and how it was meant to be. I do think he was authentic in his being and followed his Te.
  21. Taoism.....lol

I know Jackson Pollack wasn't a Taoist in life, but I think he was a perfect Taoist painter.
  22. The Way (道 i.e.Tao) of Living

“Words are flowing out like endless rain into a paper cup, They slither wildly as they slip away across the universe Pools of sorrow, waves of joy are drifting through my open mind, Possessing and caressing me. Images of broken light which dance before me like a million eyes, They call me on and on across the universe, Thoughts meander like a restless wind inside a letter box They tumble blindly as they make their way Across the universe Sounds of laughter shades of love are Ringing through my open ears inciting and inviting me Limitless undying love which shines around me like a Million suns, and calls me on and on Across the universe” ― John Lennon Maybe not practicable, we already made it conditional on other people doing it. Sometimes I wish I was better at being practical and living in reality instead of imagination, although it is nice here.
