  1. Sure, but generally the time constraint is a problem since my work schedule is arranged around my kids' school schedule. Am mostly considering it just for the 5 weeks in the summer when they are mostly with their dad. Tried to scout out (driving home) a couple more potential routes for my running home home plan; it is looking like any way I go will be a stretch on a somewhat busy road where I will have to try to stay way over on the berm since no sidewalks. I don't know how much it really saves electricity to unplug everything when not in used (toaster, tv, blender, printer really try to get the kids to watch chargers and unplug them, I no longer use a coffeepot). It seems like my electric bills are less when I remember to do it fairly consistently.
  2. I just planted cherry tomatatoes near the sidewalk yesterday. Don't mind if neighbors or passerbys pick them, sort of an experiment to see if they do. Have been eating free lunches for a couple weeks; planted lettuce, spinach and radishes as soon as soil could be worked so I've been eating lots of salads. Not completely free as I mix in stuff from the market too, but soon I'll be picking snow peas. Am considering taking the bus to work on certain days and run home. It is 20 minute drive, but bus is a little over a hour. I really wish we did have better public transportation here. Run home is about 12 miles, obviously it is not for everyone, but I am trying to make running more a functional part of my day, errands, light shopping etc.
  3. Language: Lexikos, Lexis, Legein

Yes, modern education teaches people some facts and skills, which do not include how to think. In classical education they learned by questioning things rather than being spoon fed facts and expected to believe them. But facts are a good start. http://mb-soft.com/believe/text/logos.htm
  4. Language: Lexikos, Lexis, Legein

I meant the Greek word for Word in the original text is Logos, which isn't quite the right word for Word, but English does not have a word that really translates to Logos and even in Greek Logos seems to be subject to interpretation. So this is an example of pitfalls of languages; English is a weird language. It is difficult to understand the wyrd of English. Wyrd is the word that weird came from, but the word, wyrd, evolved from a Norse word. In Old English, wyrd had to do with process of destiny or fate. But, we know longer have a English word for wyrd, which seems weird, it was a good word. You can't look at an unfamiliar word in English and know how to say it from the letters (like rough and through), in Spanish and I think Latin and Russian you can read a word and know how to say it, don't know about Greek. Spanish volvar- to turn. From Latin root same as e-volve, de-volve, but you wonder which it is? Then again, could be we just re-volve.
  5. 'Game Over for the Climate'

Fish farming is banned is Alaska, Atlantic salmon is usually farmed.
  6. 'Game Over for the Climate'

NO!!!! It's going to be poison acid water, do not go snorkeling in it.
  7. Language: Lexikos, Lexis, Legein

Logos. Greek from book of John. Maybe more like logic than lexikos. Lots of opinion and interpretations, I studied it for a bit at one time and decided it's about math. The universe has some objective rules and even god has to follow them.
  8. It's not a judgment, it's a survey

I think what separates us from animals is that we always think and wonder "why?." Although if we end up getting judged on our answers to that question doubt most will do very well. In the meantime, cooking is more enjoyable, an afterlife of reminiscing about meals past sounds pretty close to paradise to me.
  9. 'Game Over for the Climate'

I don't completely disagree with you. You basically have a middle of the road opinion and are annoyed at the alarmists. I know I skew toward an extreme and I don't completely disagree with the alarmists either. Whether it is or it isn't, if we put even a proportion of the effort and money spent on theories and studies and summits and debates into making practical changes like better public transportation, improving bike or walkability and community gardening at least it would help the problem a bit and definitely would improve "prosperity" (my definition for that might be a little different too). Thanks for all the informative opinions on climate change.
  10. 'Game Over for the Climate'

It might seem sensible to use modern "safe" techniques (like BP in the Gulf?) in a big sparsely populated area. But, What happens if we all have to move North due to climate change? Really, where does not "in my backyard" stop? I'm not sure if I understand whether the argument is about whether climate change is going on, or whether it's anthropogenic? It seems pretty obvious there is climate change: the deserts are expanding, polar bears are losing ice to run around on, more extreme weather, USDA revised planting zones this year. I've gone outside every day for the past 10 years, so pretty sure I don't need a study to tell me plants and birds are doing their thing about a month earlier than they used to. Even if it's not primarily anthropogenic, it seems like a really bad idea to use experimental technology to mass extract and then burn more poison for the air and water.

A well is not just a well, it is connected to the whole aquifer. Is cancer prevalence in fracking areas funny to you too?
  13. 'Game Over for the Climate'

The argument about climate change seem superfluous to me. I know people who can now set their well water on fire due to fracking in their area. Whether there's climate change or not, pollution and tearing up the environment seems like a terrible idea. We have summer warnings not to even touch water in certain lakes due to toxicity, not a theory. PRobably not likely to stop as long as someone can make a buck. Maybe if we can get another river to burn that might get some attention.
  14. Sky Dancers

I see Earth as deeply feminine, so perhaps Sky by default as masculine, not based on concepts or theories but as mirror of nature. The Earth is where things take root and grow. I missed the thread first time too and enjoyed reading it.
  15. If you want money more than you want kids, then don't have kids. Sorry- won't retract that because I did mean it, but realized I sounded snotty. Congratulations and good luck with your wedding. Anyway you can do lots of creative stuff to make the pricetag less than that and have fun doing it, growing your own food, take advantage of parks and nature for entertainment, library, building forts in back yard from lumbar salvaged when neighbor ripped out his deck right now, buy clothes and toys at garage sales or thrift stores because kids tend to trash them anyway.
  16. Qi revolution

It's a bargain if you need credits! And it does look interesting. I'd go if it was closer to me. but I probably couldn't get PT board to approve it anyway.
  17. That one is an old teacher trick. Maybe not faking anger but starting out a little stern and serious even about things you really aren't upset about or even secretly find a little amusing. Then later, you can relax and have more fun, but if it starts to get a little out of control, you can go back to the other way and everyone gets serious pretty quick because they remember that's how it is. Teachers who start out super nice and trying to be a good friend to all can end up with things out of control. Then when they change to seem stern and set boundaries the kids feel hurt and betrayed and it doesn't work well.
  18. the lights go out

Oh, I meant in my pocket. I also frequently screw up the electrical connections in my brain.
  19. Or you can be ridiculously kind and make them feel a little dumb and self concious. "oh my, that sounds terrible. Does your throat hurt? Do you need a tissue? I think I have some cough drops. Hope you get some rest and feel better, Sweetie."
  20. the lights go out

I've asked people about this and have heard it can be side effect of cultivation. I think some of the KAP people may have posted about how they'd make electrical devices screw up unless they took some precautions. I suck power out of batteries if I wear a watch or keep a phone in my battery, I also demagnetize credit cards and occasionally set off theft detectors in store for no reason. I wish I could blow the damn street lights because I hate light pollution. I don't think my stuff has anything to do with cultivation though. I've always done it and my dad does too; he definitely does not do any funky practices.
