Much thanks! Yes, I will be mindful of them now that I understand what to watch out for.

Taomeow (or anyone) can you explain at least a brief synopsis of what "broken days" are. I know a TCM practitioner who referred to them often and I could not adequately understand his English when he tried to explain it, to do with misalignments in Chinese astrology. I know I am sensitive to them. Thanks.

It's general discussable information.

My neighbor, who is fairly polarized Catholic, claims tolerance is a modern invention and self esteem is too. I'm think tolerance is inherent is Taoism and a very old concept, although I'm not sure if there's a word that directly translates, and also in Buddhism. Not sure about Christianity, the Greeks and Romans often basically assimilated outside religions and customs, but not sure if there is a Western tradition that implies tolerance. What do you bums think? What about self esteem?

How does your chi flow react to extended breaks from practice?
zanshin replied to Encephalon's topic in Daoist Discussion
I get similar effect, especially lots of tingles and warmth in my hands and feet when I restart after a break, then after a couple days of practice not so dramatic. The more intense feeling is sort of a rush, but I'm sure better to stick with consistent practice. How's your sleep? I had super vivid lucid dreams after babies. Not sure how much of that was sleep deprivation and irregularity and likely partly hormonal for me. -
Holographic? Quantum Mechanics? Buddhism? What is real and what isn't?
zanshin replied to Aaron's topic in General Discussion
I don't think you have to choose your beliefs, if you don't know stay open to possibilities. I have no idea, but it is fun to wonder about. Most things in nature do follow a wave/spiral pattern. What waveform does your brain make in lucid dreaming? We mostly understand straight lines, that's Newtonian physics. But even those outwardly linear things are filled with waves, spins, oscillations and vibrations. -
Drink more water and maybe eat a banana or pink grapefruit just in case. Muscles get sort of wonky at first anyway with energy movement so could be a physical reaction.

YEah, self esteem is tricksy, you need some sort of confidence to do what is right and compassionate instead of following the crowd. Narcissism and nationalism are not conducive to compassion to those on the outside. We are social beings and it's our nature to identify with groups. I like to think people can be compassionate by nature and have some sort of inherent moral compass, but you are right about racism back in the day, they really did think other groups were inferior. We also talked about virtues and values with idea that virtues (via Thomas Aquinas) are objective but values more subjective. I think tolerance is a virtue but it is based on respecting values of others. Then again, I don't feel tolerance for racists, so still situational. hmm, how do I practice tolerance? I like this guy and enjoy hearing his opinions which I mostly disagree with. But his opinions and really important to him (value), if I disagree and debate leads to him being offended. If I listen politely and ask more academic and philosophical questions snowballs to an attempt to convert me. I really am academically interested in his views and he knows a lot of history and philosophy. Could not be less interested in following his religion for myself.

When young children scream all day long, they usually are tired either that or hungry or sensory overload. Physical stress really intensifies "negative" emotional states, adults overthink these things for themselves too, often a little rest or time to do something to reset will put a whole new perspective on what we think the problem was that caused the intense emotions.

I've seen the prism-y wavy light usually with blue overtones, saw it a lot more when I was a kid. Don't know if people were more energetic back then or if I've mostly forgotten how to see it. Probably both.

Philosophical explanation of self, metta, and objective reality.
zanshin replied to Informer's topic in General Discussion
It was sort of dumb question that came to mind, I think awareness isn't faster but it permeates everything so doesn't have to travel. I like the lens metaphor too, but sometimes it even shatters, melt it down and start over. As within so without, I live in a broken world. -
No one should be immortal if even one person has to die
zanshin replied to tulku's topic in General Discussion
wow, oblivion is going to be really crowded! yes, tulku, what gives? You hint that something bad happened in spring 2010. Do you want to tell us? Are you okay? Evidently not, I agree humanity hasn't changed for a very long time, but my attitude, emotions and outlook changes all the time. Is misery and negativity your nature? -
This I really like, compassion as a practical practice.

Light is delayed, yet light is the fastest known thing in the universe, but awareness is now. How can awarenss be faster than light? -
I agree about the older people, but it also seems older people more likely to do practices. Kneeling to pray, saying prayers at a certain time or rote prayers, counting on rosary. I met an older Latina lady who told me she says a prayer every day in the shower and lets the water wash all the bad stuff away- sounds like a nice practice.

Monks and Priests have the easiest life on Earth?
zanshin replied to tulku's topic in General Discussion
I can see why women did it back in medieval times. With arranged marriages, minimal personal rights and continuous chilbearing, being a nun would have looked pretty good. -
Just do it! er...yeah, it's a link to a nike ad, but it is sort of quirky and relevant to the discussion.

Rheumalogists say don't do it, but I don't know if there's any empirical research either way.

Classical Feng Shui Seminar, Oakland, California
zanshin replied to Stigweard's topic in General Discussion
Me too. Would like to learn more about Feng shui. Can see how some of the advice about where to put your bed and desk is practical and psychologically sound, but other parts seem silly or fluffy- or really complicated and confusing. Cleaned the windows yesterday- amazing! -
Ah jeez... Are there safe practices for a pregnant woman?
zanshin replied to GreytoWhite's topic in General Discussion
Does she have practices she does already? Not really a good time to start new practices other than simple things. Walking meditation and blessing her food would be really good, practically good to be mindful of nourishment and good health and energetically should help her feel happier too. -
Children need love and acceptance and adults need love and acceptance. We all have "inner child" so to speak, yours feeling quite separate from you. I think I agree with Vortex, although I'm not sure I understood Vortex, you need to accept and integrate these parts but not "get rid of" Children and adults also need to be taken care of so if you have problems with diet and might need health factors checked for blackouts please do work on that or get it checked.

Does it matter where you live for meditation ?
zanshin replied to Tatsumaru's topic in General Discussion
I didn't think if mattered til I practiced qigong and then did some meditation in a basement clinic in a hospital (I worked there and had some downtime while waiting for a patient). Within half an hour I got achey a fever and really sick by end of the day happened freakishly fast, before I did it I was feeling fine and I rarely get sick. When I asked my teacher she told me I was really stupid to do that in a bad sick energy place and I should have listened better. She was right, she did tell us about training in a right environment, but til that happened I thought it more about movement and and the mind. It was a bad experience, but sort of an epiphany about how energy really is more than what we would scientifically think. Training under pine trees is terrific!
