Try leaving your eyes open to compare. And try to have them really open, taking in your surroundings, actively, but non-judgmentally. Another thing to try: When you conclude a session, place the palms over the closed eyes for a minute or two. Then open the eyes behind the hands, then slowly draw the hands apart to allow the light to gradually return. Like seeing the world for the first time. Just an idea...

Would you be willing to try something new, radical, way out and just way cool?

Absolutely agree with Steve. Analysing, dissecting and compartmentalizing all lead down a blind alley. I was doing 'Qi games' with a group last Thursday and one gentleman was having a wonderful time feeling Qi between his hands and in his belly, but he kept asking "what is this? And can it be measured?" I told him basically what I wrote above.

yeha, but at risk of having your home destroyed by massive flaming ball of yin-qi.

you might get more out of it if you return to being the dude trying to hold a posture and clocking time. Somethjing to experiment with: Try staying alert in your sessions. Don't go empty, don't close the eyes, don't shut out the real world. 'Standing like a tree' means standing with tremendous awareness of your surroundings. What, you think trees aren't aware? 'Standing like a tree' also means remaining active. What, you think trees are passive? This is why 'standing like a palace guard' comes closer to the state we look for. When you stand this way, eyes open, gazing over the horizon, expectantly watching for smoke rising from the hills in the distance, or listening for sound of an approaching enemy, while remaining absolutely motionless, you build up all that power internally without expending it. It's jing.

why do you even peek?

Haha epic thread I think there's more than one possible outcome. A lot depends on your mental state while standing, and subtle physical variations. Do you stand like a tree, for example, or like a palace guard?

It's true. But green trees and blue lakes are beautiful. -

High energy state attracting unwanted attention

Couldn't it also be from a heightened level of awareness? I think it could also be a kind of illusion, something like the placebo effect; you wish it, because you think it's the way it's supposed to be, and then it materializes, in order to fit your environment into your expectations, resulting in a comforting balance. I guess there are many more possibilities, but in any case, I think it pays to build up your defensive systems. -
