  1. How to properly thank a person

This is some intense words and antagonization As a parent, I've learned that praise is a poor motivator for my kids, it turns them into praise junkies and they begin to do the things I praise to get more praise, instead of for their own merits. Thanking can be like praise/flattery etc, and these things are addictive to the recipient, so I understand your point about this. I wish you shared this message with more sagely wisdom though, instead of with boxing gloves and a forked tongue. It's an interesting conversation about a reasonable subject that's been spoiled by unreasonable expectations and an unfriendly approach.
  2. Tao Babies

Well they do a great deal of their growing when they're sleeping. Often when they are wee infants they go to sleep and when they wake up they look different, their faces have grown in the space of a couple of hours, or they wake up suddenly doing new things, it's crazy how much stuff is happening within them as they lay apparently passively. Talk about non action being powerful!
  3. What's up with those pictures?

Something I'm curious about, is why he doesn't mention her on the site, if he learned Kunlun stuff from her? I would think he'd mention this here? Sorry, I guess this is in the wrong thread. I am curious though, though also doubting if any of you can answer that. I kinda like his site though, all that stuff he teaches besides the Kunlun looks really cool too.
  4. fermentation

There's some controversy over whether a diet high in fermented foods might be a risk factor for some kinds of cancer. Google it and read for yourself, to understand this controversy and come to your own conclusions.
  5. seaweed recipes

We toast a lot of Nori here, it's very fast, buy sheets of sushi nori, brush on some nutritional oil or sesame oil, a bit of soy sauce, cut it into smaller strips with kitchen scissors and stick it in the oven for the briefest time, just to slightly crisp it up, then eat it. Lots of kids actually love the stuff too.
  6. psychiatrists and therapists piss me off so much

I was seeing a therapist who is somewhat of a Taoist himself, and I personally found the sessions incredibly helpful for the specific things I was going for (anger at my small children) I had seen others before and never clicked with any of them, I think different times in our lives require different connections and different tools, I agree with trying the TCM approach, spending lots of time in nature and why not learn some EFT, the stuff is free to learn for yourself online. Nicnac!
  7. the most imp thing when you're a kid

If you want to be good to your children, be good to their mother Be conscious of your own triggers as your children set them off, and work on them If you were parented well, you probably know how to be a decent parent, if you or your wife weren't, then some parenting books or seminars would be beneficial. If you want recommendations, I would be happy to share First time parents tend to overrreact about everything, crying, nursing problems, sleep training etc, try not to be nervous about every little thing, they are resilient and will be ok. A beautiful book is the Tao of Mothering by Vimala Mclure Recognize that you will screw up sometimes, just as your child will. Enjoy the newborn thing, it is soo soo short and special, magical and amazing.
  8. Goal of Cultivating Qi/Chi?

Wow, I like this description *thumbs up* Now I'm a very new Taoist and I'm not particularly interested in energy work, gaining powers, fighting ability etc, so you could say I'm a lightweight. I had no idea about all of this energy work until I began to read here, and I've read some other stuff now. It's not particularly interesting to me, I'm more interested in feeling the energies already in me, feeling them around me, and learning to flow better with them instead of trying so hard and struggling with them in life as an average human being living a fairly average life. I assume that once people become aware of all these energies and learn to move with them it's fun to play with them an manipulate them, I'm assuming this is why some people get into it, if I did this would be why, I'm not pursuing any major spiritual "goals" other than to make peace with being human, and to live in peace with other humans.
  9. This thread is awesome, I'm working on my reading list
  10. Where does violence come from?

My kids are currently 5, 2 and 8 months, so I'm in the thick of this childhood anger stuff. My 2 year old is enraged about everything that doesn't go her way constantly, she's the most intensely emotional about things of the three of them, in fact as she was coming out of me, before she was fully born she popped just her head out, looked at my husband and screetched BAH! right at him, startling the heck out of him. She hasn't stopped giving us heck since, and it's been really peaking out lately with unbearably frequent yelling, crying and whining, perhaps anger is a big part of her personality, or perhaps it's a reincarnation thing, I dunno, but it's not just something she learned, it's something in her that's been there since birth.
  11. Where does violence come from?

It comes pretty darn early in small babies and children though, newborns aren't mobile and can't speak, so we wouldn't know if there was a kernel of violence or conflict in them yet, but it comes out surprisingly early in wee ones, even those raised in very very peaceful homes.
  12. For me, way before I knew what Taoism or Buddhism or Eastern anything was, Clive Barker's "Weaveworld" rocked my sense of reality. There's a brilliant moment where a man is falling from high up downwards towards an ancient woven carpet, but in that carpet is another universe, another dimension and he describes the air, sounds, smell and everything changing as he falls from one dimension into another, it blew my mind. I was a young teenager, and this introduction to the idea of multiple dimensions, written so well I could feel that it was a description of a large truth, forever altered me, I've been a seeker ever since, and a knower of the reality of multiple dimensions.
  13. A QUICK TAOIST TOOL FOR THE MIND.

Can I share this in other online places? It's beautiful and could help many create peaceful moments
  14. What a Tosser!

Is fighting ability the only proof/measure of "power" and energy? I know some healthy, peaceful, wise chunky people...particularly elders, wise strong grandmothers, old wise men. Gertrude Baines...current oldest person in the world at 114 is not all skinny, she's the plumpest of these oldest people in the world types I've seen, yet somehow she's still kicking and looking pretty darn good for her years. I look to her as an example in another arena, which is all the different eating fads out there raw/vegan/caveman whatever, this woman ate the typical southern fried chicken collards and buscuits diet and there she goes, living on and on, despite the claims of various health trendsetters. I've known some very fit runners and athletes who kick the bucket pretty young for their years, there's more to this equation than body fat and athleticism. When I do some reading about these internal arts I encounter pics of guys that look like these big bellied men, lots of them on Chinese type sites. They don't seem to think one needs a flat belly to pull this stuff off
  15. Growing with the Tao

Do you have mung beans or brown lentils? Or were you thinking more alfalfa style?
  16. Growing with the Tao

No. You soak them for a few hours or overnight, then you rinse them thoroughly twice a day and drain them well, eating them before they spoil is important too. I don't put mine in the sun, just on a regular kitchen counter. If you were going for more chlorophyl sun would be good though, maybe I should experiment with that too. If you want to sprout I can start up a batch and guide you through a round at the same time and show you mine with pictures, I've been meaning to on my blog anyways, got any mung beans or lentils or organic gardening seeds, anything like this around you can get started with? (If you want to, that is)
  17. Growing with the Tao

It's even easier than that first video shows, you don't need a screen first. Cheese cloth or a piece of cotton t shirt or anything really, to strain them with after you rinse them out works just as well, a screen lid from a health food store is not necessary, nice, but not necessary. You can sprout almost any kind of bean or seed except NOT kidney beans, they're toxic unless cooked well as a bean.
  18. Growing with the Tao

For people who can't garden for any myriad reasonds, fresh sprouts, dried out seeds that burst with life once soaked in water are an option. Sprouting is very cheap, very easy and it's amazing how good one feels after eating them. There's so many great recipes online for the use of these sprouts now too, I recently sprouted lentils and made this with them and it was scrumptious. One doesn't even need a garden to grow their own food, a jar, cheap seeds and tap water work too! DaoChild, do you harvest for medicinal uses too? I've been making some tinctures lately, started with california poppy and nettle seeds, hope to make more this year. I don't know your area at all, but I've been amazed to learn how so many of the best wild weeds grow all around the world, people step on them, wage war on them, and just ignore this bounty that is free for the taking and optimal for human consumption.
  19. Growing with the Tao

I garden some, am planting shelling peas today actually, and we eat kale/parsley/rosemary all year round. We're also going to get some chickens this spring I'm also into wildcrafting, the harvesting of wild plants for food, stinging nettle season is here now, and chickweed is good, dandelion leaves, miner's lettuce and more, any bums also do this?
  20. What is prayer?

For me in my tumultous youth it was often a desperate appeal in case someone was listening, when I felt there was no one to help me. I became a devoted Christian when I was 10, read the bible twice that year and the church choir was my reason for living. Prayers were constantly said to help me cope with the inescapable abuse that was my family life. I think prayer can be this for some people who don't actually even believe in anything, during difficult human times, I hear that even athiests pray during desperate times. Of course there are many other reasons for prayer, but this is one of them. \ And that, wow, that was well said
  21. Borax

That's odd! I have some kicking around for cleaning cloth diapers, I think, maybe I'll try this though tomorrow, but I'm not so sensitive and probably won't notice anything. My first daughter, when she was wee used to laugh deep belly laughs at the picture on our borax box of the borax girl holding a box with the borax girl holding a box with the borax girl, one of those infinity pics Borax Girl My husband beside me asks what the hell this is all relating to, and I'm really not sure
  22. What are you listening to?

    something precious
  23. Edited: Steve suggested the simple and perfect solution to the issue that prompted my original post, but now I'm curious about what styles of Tai Chi many of you do, and your thoughts on it, if anyone cares to share I've been learning Taoist Tai Chi off and on for the past two years, taking off 9 months in there while pregnant. I was getting fairly good at it, feeling it working internally and it has been a great joy in my life. Unfortunately the teacher has just rearranged the class times and I can't make it to the new classes, I live on a small rural island where there are no other teachers and no other way to get to a regular class. I remember much of the set and can keep practising that, but I'd like to keep learning..... I'm curious about some of the other forms of Tai Chi, the older styles that are more popular in the Asian communities. And then, well, after being in a class situation that I loved, I'm going to have to learn from videos I guess, which kinda bites but it's the best I can do for now if I want to keep learning. So now that I don't have a class I can get to and there's no reason to be limited to that form of Tai Chi, what styles do you more experienced folks recommend, and what videos? We are tight financially these days so I can't afford to shell out too much for lots of different ones. Thank you, anyone who helps out with recommendations
