Yoda, After reading the book and practicing a few times, I started to get some results which grew with each practice session. Eventually these sessions involved such vigorous and sometimes violent movement that I dubbed Kunlun the "heavy metal" of cultivation, and was kinda freaked out about practicing it. At the seminar Max adjusted my energy during one of my violent outbursts and told me that was "where" I should be. So now when the movement gets too strong, I remember to smile a deep smile and things calm down and become very peaceful. It seems like the heavy movement happens when I forget to smile this deep smile. When I remember, the movements generally settle down. The quality of this energy is very harmonious and peaceful. However, I reserve the right to comment again when I get a better handle on it. On the seminar in general: This was the best qigong/meditation seminar that I have ever been to. I have taken a number of classes, lessons, personal instruction, and retreats. The seminar was fun, well taught, covered just enough information to keep it straight but not so much you get confused. The energy was great and the instruction provided an excellent initiation into the practice of Kunlun and the other practices described above. Max was great, but he does not really know how speak well to a group. Some the ideas he was trying to communicate did not come across as well as I thought they could have. This is a minor point as the reason for the class is to learn the practice, not to listen to Max speak about concepts and ideas. That is one thing that I really like about Kunlun - it is dogma free, besides practicing sober, there are no ideas about philosophy or morality or anything else. Like he says try it and find out, be your own master.

Yeah, it was a great time. It was fun meet and spend time with some of the folks I know only through their "superhero" names. The practices/techniques taught were just awesome. Well worth the time, money, and traveling that it took. Two thumbs up.

My plane arrives around 6:30 and I'm planning to catch a cab to the metaphysical bookstore. I too am staying at the Courtyard Mesa and would appreciate a ride there, if you have room. I'll be up for whatever after the talk Friday, just not too late. Looking forward to it!

A former roommate of mine was into this stuff. Last I talked to him he had done everything except the head training. After every part of the body is complete the "energy training" begins. Its some pretty intense stuff. He balanced it with 2 hours of Vipassana meditation daily. He always had stories about strange things and weird people who were involved in the training. He dated a girl from his class and they would get into monster fights, but calm down after a while and blame it on all the "cleansing of the meridianss" they were going through. In any case you could punch him or her in the belly and your fist would bounce off. They said it was their "chi firing". They had a bunch of tricks like that to demonstrate their chi. Cool stuff.

There is a theory that cats purr when injured to help promote healing. Same idea as standing on a vibrating plate. I wonder which frequencies would be more conducive to healing or effecting various parts of the body. an article: http://www.bksv.com/2798.asp

As far as playable web games go its pretty lame, I only played the first 3 levels though, so it may get better. The idea is cool and all, but the same game has been done 100s of times, with different characters. A couple of my favorite playable web games are: Desktop Tower Defense Bowmaster Prelude

How about a top 10 list? top ten things i learned lurking at taobums.com 10. few know anything, and none know everything (unless you have a lot of cash and time secret workshops in China) 9. avoid chia 8. meridians should be open 7. drinking pee is ok 6. get your own dan tien - if you can figure out what one is 5. ron jeremy is not just a porn star 4. he who speaks the most says the least 3. keep your tongue up 2. don't forget to breathe 1. never trust a top 10 list or whatever, we could put some of the better suggestions from above into a top 10 list on the back of the shirt.

I offered from my experience how I turned from a person who talked about things to a person who talked to people. You asked me if I was recruiting for some kind of club. WTF?? There you tried to criticize me. Then you began an all out attack, insulting my intelligence, experience, motives, and attitude, later you resorted to insulting my happiness. It reflects upon you. In any case a discussion on an online forum is wholly unlike a conversation in person. There is no contact, no shared environment, no body language, none of the things that make a personal conversation, personal. I was merely sharing what I found helpful until I was attacked by you. I was seeking for you to recognize that I was merely trying to contribute, and not put myself out to be attacked for having an intellectual club or anything else. I'm just a dude who wants to help people out. Good night.

I was merely relating my experience in developing my conversational skill and you were critical of me. I have all the conversations I want and am satisfied in and with them. I believe that we do not understand one another or that you are being hypercritical of my contribution.

Uhh yeah, riiiight. Its easy to sit in your comfortable home behind a computer screen and say that someone's fear of death just is their own personal failing, but until you've had a gun pulled on you you'll never know how far from reality you are. Losing complete attachment to the body is an advanced stage of spiritual cultivation. Further, having your life threatened at gun point by someone you don't know is an experience that will change your life. Its not cool, its not easy, you don't think rationally, your are in a shit panic unlike any panic you've experienced before. It is not like "Yeah man come on in take what you want don't mind me." A few moments after word you can't even remember what you said or what when down when you were faced with the possibility of the end of your life at someone else's whim. If that avatar is your picture then you seem young, likely you do no have a wife or kids, same as me. I can not imagine what would happen if someone broke into my house and threatened my family. A high degree of non attachment indeed.

Sure, guilty as charged. I desire conversation with a degree of intelligence and philosophical depth. But in my mind talking about "things" whether philosophical concepts, the weather, or science is still making small talk. When I talk to people I want to know how they feel about these deep topics, why they feel that way, and what experiences they have had that made them consider those philosophies or study those sciences in the first place. Thats the kind of depth I seek, getting to know people, making a connection and sharing with them. Discussions on a internet forum are inherently different than in person discussions for a number of reasons. I am drawn here to be able to discuss spiritual cultivation, self improvement, and related ideas with other people who have valuable ideas and experiences to contribute. I offer my comments in hopes that someone else may benefit from them. I generally try not to debate the finer points of esoteric topics, although I did go through that phase. Now I try to contribute value and take what I feel is of value to me.

Sure another way to look at it is that we are not seeing eye to eye. I know that small talk is just the surface of a person talking and that if I want to get to know someone better I have to talk about them and how they think and feel. This may not provide for philosophically "deep" conversation, but it provides for a more personal, intimate conversation, which is more fun an satisfying than small talk. Please enlighten me as to what you mean by deep. I assume that when people share personal stories with me where they laugh out loud, blush, become highly animated that the conversation has taken on a personal depth beyond that of small talk. Signs of befuddlement do occur, and thats the risk you take in starting a conversation, some people are just boring, closed off, or emotionally absent. I am dumbstruck that you have not had someone lead a conversation that you have been in, or conversed with someone who skillfully got you to participate in a conversation that you enjoyed. Perhaps you need to get out more and stop being so critical.

If your comment is directed at me, then you have misunderstand me. My goal in a conversation with someone I do not already know, or would like to get to know better, is to try to cut through the small talk and to share a conversation about their thoughts, feelings, and experiences on a deeper level. I don't have a club for anyone to join, I simply enjoy meeting and getting to know people on a level deeper than small talk. In that effort I offer the same, exactly what I "desire to receive back". The structure of human interaction normally requires one person to initiate a deeper level of conversation (beyond facts, and into opinions or feelings) for the other to follow along. That then requires me to offer (or request) what I desire to receive in order to get the same back. If you get the feeling that there is something devious or self serving here, its not, its simply the way that conversations work and most people, incuding myself and the people I speak with, enjoy a good conversation. Check out the book Conversationally Speaking.

I meant that ideally the process takes 1.5 hours. 10 minutes to sit down get the visualization going, 1 hr of actual Kunlun, then 20 min of cooldown/dan-tien posture. I have never made a full hour yet, my shoulder usually gives out between 30 and 45 minutes. I recently had surgery on my ankle and have been unable to practice for a bit, hopefully I'll be able to get a few minutes in tomorrow morning. Anyone have any ideas about a less than 1 hour Kunlun posture requiring less than 20 min cool down?

The water situation in the US, and probably the world is pretty bleak. Check out this article. Very informative. Very scary. The priorites of the US are going to be changing over the next 5 years and while change is unavoidable and all, this is going to be something entirely different.

I like the "get in the way" slogan. I feel like a logo would be cool. Something classic but irreverent. edit: maybe a b.w. montage of some selected avatars.

The Kunlun book advises against mixing with other, specifically energy moving, practices. I think a stretching/yoga asana warm up is good, at least for me, to get my body and mind awakened, but I really don't have time for more than some stretching and 1.5 hours of Kulun before starting my day.

The solution for small talk that works best for me is to turn it personal as quickly as possible. This can be accomplished by asking an opened ended question like "Whats that like?", "What got you into that?", "How does that make you feel?". The next step I take is to say something supportive and then tell a story along the same lines, like "I want to live I life where I can help people, it really feels so good to know that someone else is in a better place after having interacted with them." I always make sure to pepper my response with plenty of adjectives and emotions to make it more engaging. The more you practice the better you get. Everyone has an amazing story in them, you just have to get it out. Be supportive. Taking this approach has helped my personality in general.

Cameron, Guns are not inherently evil, nor are they low energy. This is only a reflection of your thoughts about guns. My feelings about guns is that they are a tool and often a valuable tool, unfortunately they are used without forethought, in ignorance, and without education. Just like any other tool they can, and unfortunately are, used to injure people. I agree that this use is bad, wrong, and evil. However a gun does not fire itself, it requires someone to load, aim, and fire it. That said some people are still injured when all precautions are taken, occasionally hunter is shot instead of a deer. An individual who owns a gun should use it. In fact they should be proficient in its use and in all relevant safety measures. I recall an article I read a year or so ago that talked about a community that had a very high percentage of armed residents, and they had reduced crime rates. Criminals didn't want to get shot robbing someone. From a certain perspective is seems that the criminals are counting on their victims don't have a gun every time that commit a crime. I wonder how many trucks with a NRA stickers get car-jacked. Anyhow, my feelings are that guns are dangerous and gun owners need to treat them with the up most respect and caution. There are enjoyable uses for guns, however in the wrong hands people misusing guns can wreak havoc. Also, the founders of the U.S. made a point of telling us that we have the right to bear arms and I feel this is very important for two reasons. First, foreign invaders would never bring an army into the US as the populace is too armed and what the army didn't take care of the citizenry would. Second, the founders believed that we may need to defend ourselves from the government someday. Concerning karma I have two things to say. First, karma such a complex topic that it is said only the fully enlightened can understand its workings. Also, Milarepa killed 35 people as an act of revenge and attained enlightenment, not to say that we could or should, we should live as skillfully as possible, but karma is mysterious. One thing I wonder about is whether it is better to kill an animal to eat than it is to buy dead animals to eat. Buying meat from the grocery store exposes you to all kinds of nasty stuff, and supports an incredibly destructive and animal abusive system. On the other hand, if you kill the animal, you pulled the trigger and the blood is on your hands so to speak. Thanks for starting the discussion. edit: cleaned up the skillful part
