Only a small portion of the world population can initialize qi themselves ; Qi is still viewed as something strange,let alone the spiritual power refined from qi that can cure...a circle /forum of top Taoist alchemists very likely be viewed as a group of modern shaman and witches...

Chen Ying Ling( 陳攖寧, 1880-1969) , the most influential Chinese Taoist scholar in the last century. Although died in the years of the Culutral Revolution,his influence can still be felt among the young Taoists nowadays.

My favorite Buddhist proverb is : 佛說一切法 , 為除一切心 . 我無一切心 , 何用一切法 . How about yours? This time I remind myself of giving an English translation , it is : All those ways and methods that Buddha preached are, in fact, for eliminating all different kinds of minds that we have; yet I do not have any kinds of those minds, what purpose to me for knowing all those teachings ?

I wonder Hagar's achievement/experience is close to the opening of the Magic Gateway ,which can be imagined as some kind of " white hole"( expressed in modern jargon) arisen in us ; Magic gateway is a definite stage people will/need to reach if high achievement is targeted ,regardless of what approach, Taoist or Buddhist, they adopt ; however, he does not mention two things/ pre-conditions : 1) The appearance or pop-up of a Meta-Mind ('元神')/Budda Heart; 2) The rise of the embryonic breathing ; So, I can't judge.... Besides, as we already watch too many movies about such a light or similar stuff , and read too many books describing them , I am always doubtful towards people who claim how wonderful a light-related experience they get in their practice, especialy those who adopt a method of visualizing light/ fire /ball..etc from the start.

No matter how wonderful , what beautiful things we "see" and experience in this process, unable to open the Magic Gateway condemns our life-time effort to something futile. In order to make sure that our life-time struggle not becoming something wasteful , not becoming something illusory or self-deceit, some kind of reliable criterion has to be adopted. As the emergence of the embryonic breathing is the pre-condition for opening that gateway, it should naturally be the choice... A famous Taoist saying tells us : " 不識玄關, 學道無益" ("It is doomed to be fruitless if we can't recognize the Magic Gateway" )

I think instead of emphaizing those subjective, visual impressions or feelings, say light or heat( which can be illusory), we get in this process, the significance of Taoist dan , which different from all other Buddhist ways, is its emphasize on the "Ming " aspect ( Life aspect ) of our practice. The appearance of embryonic way of breathing is therefore more critical/reliable than the appearance of light or center of light..etc,because the stop of the old way of breathing and the emergence of a new way of breathing can't be illusory : So strange/ dreadful/ unprecedented it is that people can't imagine and generate it themselves. Besides, capable of initializing it means our capability of starting a tour around some kind of "white hole" and trying to extract its outcoming energy /matter for an eternal life with physical cum spiritual character...

~ Clever Taoists likely love programming at CLI in Linux rather than doing things in an IDE of Windows. Visulaization, sex pratices, paying attention to your dantian, circulating your qi around the micro-cocmic orbit..etc, all those stuff are like graphic icons / interface that give you pleasures yet illusions ,misleading you to think that you are doing things efficiently , that you are in control , which unfortunately is unreal .. you are, in fact, more distant from the core of the Machine/Tao. ~ The basic , lowest block of the system is ,in fact, just composed of yin qi ," 0" and yang qi ,"1" no matter how noisy/ colorful it appears before you . ~ The way of attaining pre-heavenly qi/Tao is , in fact, a series of abstract

The book is a collection of the preachings of a Tang- dynasty Zen monk whose name is Huang Bo (黃檗) .

The two greatest Chinese Zen's writings are: 1) The preachings/Sutra of the sixth Patriach("六祖壇經") 2) Summary on how to transmit the Heart of Buddha ("傳心法要") These two books are written by the Chinese, not Indians, but the indepth truth that they preach can only be matched by very few Buddhist Sutra , say the Diamond Sutra Buddha or the Heart Sutra. Only after having read and understood these two works, can any person claim that he understands what Chinese Zen is . Better read the original copy of them, for only translators who achieve the same or close level of an enlightedned Mind can do the translation well, which seems unlikely to get ...

Whatever mind, no-mind, mindlessness, enlightened Mind..etc we choose to enter , includes its relation to our senses, should not be something we subjectively think or like , but something that is proved to be capable of enhancing our abilities , in both physical and spiritual aspects ; which , in fact, also reflects the requirements of Taoist dual cultivation: 1) Physical: whether such a mind/no-mind/midlessness/Mind makes us initialize high-quality qi easier ? High-quality qi, of course, is something very easy to be identified , say , in the past you have to eat 3 meals a day, now you only have to eat once in 2~ 3 days yet still being energetic. Or, in the past, you have to s sleep 7~8 hours a day, now you only have to sleep 3~4 hours a day yet still maintaining your sane status; Paying more attention to your senses, your body or your dantian, that kind of attached way definitely does not help you initialize higher-quality qi .. 2) Spiritual : whether such a mind/no-mind/mindless/enlightened Mind..etc enahnces your ability of understanding/ reasoning / intuition? For example, in the past, you can never understand a subject named differential geometry, a language called Japanese or those characteristics in programming called OOP , thinking that to you it is too abstract /complicated /demanding in memorizing .. absolutely beyond your reach...,now after your having entered that spiritual status, all those strange symbols, tedious steps of reasoning , tons of vocabularies, all suddenly become simple, comprehensive , a piece of cake...to you.

The reality is that our mind is split in our senses, and therefore limited by them : our eyes can't see things happening next door, our ears can only hear things happening within 100 feet, for example. Yet after having pulled back our mind and consolidated it into an unity , its power , like powerless dispersed light changed to coherent laser beam that cutting through hard steel ,starts to appear and those limitations that our senses put on it start to disappear.That is why in deep meditation , we can hear things happening far, far, away, we can foretell things not yet happened ... A free, detached Mind also makes the initialization of high-quality qi possible. With it, we no longer suffer from sickness and aging; no longer suffer from the pressing needs of sleeping and eating..

How can you be so sure that our senses give us the most precise and abundant picture of this world? Detachment from our sense , even from reasoning, is because we know that there is a more colorful , more realistic world there..

Both "土" and " 地" can mean ground ; But "土" more often refer to soil , a platform or element where plants and crops grow . So in the five-element framework , the character "土" is used. On the other hand, " 地" is always used in the context of being the opposite of the Heaven/sky ;Likely be a bigger concept which refers to an arena where people live..

A mind can't be free if it is split and absorbed into those senses; Detached from our senses is the first step of making us free.

Although I am mainly a supporter of Taoism , I have to admit that Zen's way : "Having detached from all minds you get the real Mind, ie, enlightenment" ("離一切心即真心") is undoubtedly the quickest . How? Concretely speaking: " I walk every day, but never touch the ground; I eat every day, but chew no rice " It is gong not artistic expression. Detachment is some kind of real gong fu : Detachment from anywhere, any minds is the important practice we have to try to do ; however, it is such a pity that nearly nobody believes in it. People more likely love those ways of visualizing something or sex practice...etc; It is why they are so far away from the way of the Buddha Heart , it is why real Taoist sifu searching for centuries but can't find a real disciple ... The corresponding way of it in Taoism , as many people who read ChuangTze know, is forgetting.. You forget everything, even yourself, even this mind of forgetting ...to the utmost, from "Chaos", you awake... It is like the cosmos abruptly ,becoming self-conscious of itself from "Chaos" at certain status , so we call it the " Heart of the Cosmos"( "天心")..This is why the book " Laotze" tells us : " People have to learn from the Heaven " ("人法天" ), yet are always ignored. Such way , of course , is not the easiest. However, whether it is easy or not really dependent on people , on your mindset.. Buddha or Laotze , of course, does not cheat or make fun of us .

Yours is too easy, I expect something more difficult: 地 Earth, ground 人 Man, people

Dual cultivation is always the highest principle of Taoist alchemy , it can mean: 1)Cultivate both the spiritual and physical aspects of us 2) Cutlivate both Shen and qi of us 3) Cultivate the Innate nature(性) and life (命) of us when talking about our practice under different circumstances and stages. Any cultivation of our mind, our spiritual ability or psychic power without paying attention to qi , without using qi as "nitrition " to noursih it , will very likely generate into some kind of one-side noursihment of a yin-type of spirit, which is vulnerable to : ~ becoming short-lived ( it is nothing related to Taoist immortality ) ~ becoming immoral ( Even can get a supernatural power from it, but for what ? Tao and te are not linked in this kind of practice) ~ be not healthy (It is unlikely to be any real healing power ) A ghost-typed immortal (鬼仙) is ,in fact , a ghost ; it is only because it goes aberrant , dying in cultivation different from ordinary people's death that we call it ghost- immortal.The final destiny of these people are no big difference from ordinary people's .

The most difficult thing is not in daytime when you are awake, but when you are in sleeping and dreaming . And , it is an issue of time .As a taoist poem tells us : 有人問我修玄路 ( When being asked the way of Taoist alchemy, 遙指天邊月一輪 I point to the full moon hanging in the sky ) Taoist alchemy knows the time well , knows the laws about when and in which channel that qi circulates in our body precisely ; because of this, it does the sublimation without difficulties. Anytime when it is already materialized, don't use it ( "見者不可用" ) . The absolute guarantee is that you sublimate all your jing into qi and lock it at that lever high ( WARNING: That means you deliberately suspend your reproductive ability ) Having achieved it , even you get an "evil' idea some time, it doesn't hurt... What is the reward ? People start to laugh at us .... It is ,you start to experience the happiness of a life of what people call the earthly immortal ( " 地仙" ) Do you ever wonder what the feeling is when a butterfly leaving its cocoon ?
