Why do masters keep secrets?
exorcist_1699 replied to Old Man Contradiction's topic in General Discussion
To me, it is simple . Because Taoist way of immortality is real and honorable, and should only be heard by spiritually noble people . Because with Tao embodied in our body, the power we get will be great. So, there are lot of shallow people who use the pretext of science, psychology...or other excuses, cheaply market it . It always happened in the past , only not under the cover of science; seeing this , some real Taoist masters , in order to maintain Tao's "dignity " , they prefer to speak less . -
It seems it is the Yin side that always gain the upper hand

Taoist wisdom on Human love can be summarized in the following poem: 人情濃厚道情微 道用人情世罕知

In fact, different sounds always accompany our practice : the pop-up of a bigger Mind, the open of the Magic Gate...all give people significant sounds or even thunders..

It seems attaining a status of emptiness is closely linked with the stop of our old , ordinary way of breathing , and open to the possibility of a new way of life ; The fluctuating mind is , in fact , the main reason barring us from experiencing our genuine existence . The characteristics of this pseudo- existence are incorporated in our dependence on air, food, water, sleeping ...all of course make us unfree , and is unlikely to be anything reasonable .

郝太古說: " 境殺心則凡 , 心殺境則仙". 馬丹陽說: " 性定則情忘 , 體虛則氣運 ". 上陽子說: " 一點陽精 , 秘在形山 , 不在心腎 , 而在玄關一竅".

Yes, you can use bigger size of font. It seems we can add some HTML codes into the message we write in order to control what we want to show ?

There are many ways of chopping that series of consciousness , Zen's way seems the most clean-cut ,and can be summarized in just one sentence: "當下無心, 悟無所得 " " At one stroke I enter mindlessness , and expect no more " ( from Awakening, Enlightenment... ) The key is " expect no more " which simply bars any ideas from coming .....

I would like to add: 內葯( internal medicine ) : it is said that the internal medicine lets you accomplish your Mind ("內葯了性"); Which seems referring to yang in Kan; 外葯(external medicine ): it is said that the external medicine lets you accomplish your everlasting Life ("外葯了命" ); That is ,because Pre-heavenly qi from outside is boundless, after grasping it from outside into our body , we are privileged to live forever .

Hi ,Iskote, Try as follows: 我本清虛種 玲瓏貫古今 為厭名利冗 且隠淤泥中 Me (我), originally like a seed( 種) cultivated from pure emptiness(清虛) delicate and free (玲瓏) , traveling across the times(古今) Tired of (為厭 )being entangled (冗) by fame and fortune(名利) Hide(隠 ) myself for a while( 且 ) in dirt and dust (淤泥) Of course, here "dirt and dust " refers to the world where we live.

Hi, 我肯定不是什麼師傳, 互相切磋倒是很樂意的 . ( I am definitely not any kind of master, yet I am pleased to discuss with people about Taoism )

Hi, Little1, Glad to see you here, I expect your posting more on this Chinese forum.

Thank for all the responses , I am exploring how high a level of Chinese reading ability that members of this forum possess ; all criticisms are welcome ,even harsh ones. How about this simpler, famous Taoist poem : 有物先天地, 無為本寂廖, 能為萬物主, 不逐四時凋. A plain ,literal translation as follows: There exists something (有物) before(先) the emergence of the world( 天地 ) Silent and secret (寂廖), originally(本) seems doing nothing(無為) Yet it governs(主) everything(萬物) Beyond the changes of time(四時), it lasts forever (不 ...凋)

Emptiness meditation is unlikely to be anything analytical, any hair-splitting of our consciousness is domed to fail ; it bars us from reaching any status of mindlessness, let alone Enlightenment . Many people equal emptiness meditation to a status of mindlessness , which is unlikely to be true . I think we have to identify two different situations: 1) unproductive : a continual status of having no fluctuation of our consciousness ,even lasting for hours , yet does not lead to a bigger Mind (an appearance of Buddha-Mind). This status is called Pseudo-Emptiness 2) productive : a continual status of having no fluctuation of consciousness , then leads to a sudden pop-up of another Mind (Buddha-Mind) ,totally different from our daily trivial one. This is called (approaching )Genuine-Emptiness . Of course, the later one is what we want to have , yet any chasing after it is doomed to failure .We have to wait for its own appearance patiently ...

I am excited to find the appearance of this Chinese Forum. I think anything related to Chinese Taoism , language and culture can be chatted here in Chinese or English . It seems someone who can read Chinese should act as a moderator so that postings of commercial and pornographic messages will not appear here . Me seems to be inappropriate to do the job as all know what my "ideological " inclination is , and will doubt my impartiality. Besides , to my understanding , there are not few members here who can read Chinese. Maybe this forum can also perform as a platform where people can learn Chinese through some simple Taoist poems and sayings . Simple doesn't necessarily mean shallow, for Taoist truth is always expressed in two and three simple sentences .

The 1st International Summit on Laozi and Daoist Culture

Maybe the only system that can assimilate , not using the term "getting rid of ", Marxism is Taoism . Likely similar to Taoist treatment of Buddhism , it does not get rid of it , but quietly assimilate it as in the case of Zen Buddhism . Comparing to the previous , unsuccessful attempt of dialectical materialist to assimilate qi into Marxism, trying to interpret it as some forms of matter, Taoism's assimilation of Marxism should be done in a " natural" way, in the form of wuwei ; not a simple discard , but an absorption of those fantastic ideas such as alienation , negation of negation , commodity fetishism ..and useful ideas from thinkers such as Reich , Fromm, Marcuse .. -
What Chinese has "root" is similar to English has its roots: mini, tele, post, sub, pscho....similarly not few of them . Of course, starting from the roots , you get the fastest way to identify the Chinese characters, and then master them . The roots , such as : 弓, 木,口,大,金,火,戈.... are in fact also the basic components of most Chinese characters . In traditional form of Chinese, there are quite a lot of them , and the sequence of writing them, putting these building blocks together maybe quite challenging to most foreigners .

Contrary to French class teacher who is apt to overstate the quantity of regular verbs ending with -ir ,-er or -re used in daily life , Chinese class teacher , in goodwill , always understates the quantity of Chinese characters that foreign students need to learn , so as not to scare them away. An amount of around 5,000 characters seems more reasonable .

Tao , identified by some Chinese Taoists as pre-heavenly qi, can be said to be the Trinity of jing-qi-shen ; it is only after having embodied in the physical world , does it split . The grasp of Tao does change the time-space of our existence , at least the existence of that individual who practices it. For example , all people get aging, he doesn't. All people 's hearing ability are limited by physical obstacles, his doesn't . Nobody know things going to happen in the far future, he does... Pre-heavenly qi is also repeatedly described as " nothing can be smaller than it "("其小無內") , and "nothing can be bigger than it "("其大無外" ) ; quite a contradictory saying , yet it conversely tells us the grasp of it leads to a capability of restructuring the time-space structure of our existence that hardly can be accomplished by other material means ( not to mention the fact that accelerating a big object close to the speed of light or producing any anti-matter is beyond the reach of any individual ) .

I can't answer all questions , but would like to talk about few of them . Taoist Shen , different from our present ego which I claim pseudo, does show some soft of collective , moral characteristics; it is the product of the refined qi , after its having reached certain level . Although we always claim understanding other people's ideas and sufferings , yet in most cases, we are just some kind of selfish , not moral individual . Why? the answer is simple , we don't get direct touch with other people's feelings . Qi helps expanding our spirit and making such direct contact possible . In fact, in our cultivation , no matter what way we adopt , Taoist or Buddhist, once we are capable of keeping our mindless situation longer and clearer , our trivial mind starts to have some abrupt change , some qualitative jump happens , such a rise to a different mind is what Taoism calls Shen ( of course, there are different degree of greatness ). Unfortunately many people don't know how to reach it , so they carelessly laugh at Taoist concept of Shen. These people can mainly be classified into two types: 1) Young people who are distracted by their daily ,materialist life. Of course, as their mind are never settled, never static long enough , there is no possibility of pushing their mind to a higher level. 2) Old people who , although get a settled mind, yet in which jing and qi are deficient, are still difficult to nourishing a quality-different mind ; so, similarly they doubt the truth of all those claims related to Shen . However, comparing to the Buddhist way of introducing old people to the Pure Land 's method, Taoist way of asking these old people to accumulate jing and qi to a more abundant status before dreaming of attaining Shen , to me, seems to be a more realistic approach .
