How does one become an immortal according to taoism?
gendao replied to RongzomFan's topic in General Discussion
There are some very interesting parallels between Chinese & Indian cosmological models of the path towards immortality (some of it probably due to direct influence): -
Here's an amusing example of a current polygamous relationship with a fabulously wealthy, famous, dominant, "yang"-looking celeb: I guess in this case - 50% of a man with millions of dollars, "tiger's blood & Adonis DNA" is still faarr more than 100% of a regular Schmoe. So while the % is lower...the absolute value is still higher with him. And absolute value is what (many) women are really comparing men by.. So, this "unconventional" relationship is actually fairly logical according to simple Game Theory math.

Yet, I think they are related. As in, quantity is symptomatic of quality. IOW, the deeper you are going into meditation, the longer you can easily meditate...and the faster the time seems to fly by.. Whereas if the quality of your meditation is low (stuck in your monkey mind chasing the running horse of intellect), then time will pass by excruciatingly slowly.. Like when I first started trying several years ago...just 10 minutes felt like a torturous eternity!! But now 45 minutes pass by quite comfortably feeling like a medium length of time.

I've found that everything is integrated and you can't compartmentalize "spirituality." "Spirituality" is not a separate activity - but the way you approach everything you encounter in any realm - including your mundane 3D life. Perhaps especially your 3D life. Because 3D life is why we're here. An excruciatingly realistic VR game that we can learn and evolve incredibly from. The "spiritual" way is then to place importance on learning these lessons from this game - rather than on just the game itself (which is just a means to the former end). Of course, this is much easier said than done because of how fvcking awesomely good & realistic this game is! Anyhow, sounds like you are taking such an approach and I'm sure you will make it through!

Sloppy & O - points well taken.. Are you Chinese with a Chinese mother? I am...and have been to China multiple times as well.. Again, I would agree with her about the stronger work ethic in Chinese culture. However, I think her story is also a severe case that is outside the norm. I mean, no playdates or being in school plays? No computer games? Asian kids are actually known for being avid gamers. So yes, I think she's more on the extreme end here. Of course, "normal" stories about slighter differences don't sell - so that's why stories like hers blip up on the radar to begin with.. Life is also full of trade-offs and I think she has some blind spots because as a woman, she gets less stigmatized by certain issues (like the type that Non speaks of) that she is inducing with her chosen measures of success. The downside to overfocusing on left-brain academics and societal gold stars is that you may stunt your own individuality and social development. Life is more than just about grades, professional accolades and career advancement for some people. Perhaps women like her may value wealth & status more...but everyone's definition of success is very subjective. For instance, being a nerd can severely impede a male's romantic connections (as Sloppy probably has noticed amongst his Asian male buds). So, there are some definite serious drawbacks here to this type of narrow tunnel vision. And I am talking about PRACTICING Daoism. As in neidan, qigong, healing, feng shui, IMA, etc. You really think this author "lives" qi? Lol, c'mon man. Chinese don't naturally practice any of these arts simply by virtue of being Chinese. If you really believe that - then go ask a random Chinese person for some qi healing the next time you see one!
-
Well, it might not be bullshit for you or perhaps dmattwads. You guys may not be "yin-looking" males - so get an entirely different reception by women. Which is Non's whole point - how men get treated very differently by women depending upon their apparent "yin" or "yangness." And no, I don't think he needs a woman to hug him. That would only be external validation. What he really needs is a more yang appearance...although since much of that is determined prenatally, I don't know how possible that is postnatally? So, here we encounter the figurative Taoist dilemna of how to boost prenatal energy postnatally? Or some other workaround or resolution. I've had a very similar lifetime struggle myself - so I don't know the answer yet, either!

Lol, but the funny thing is that these attitudes were all created by the liberal Baby Boomers themselves! They angrily rebelled against their own parents, living responsibly within your means and worked tirelessly to dismantle the "oppresssive Patriarchy/establishment." Hey, if Johnny is acting up and doing poorly in school...then we should make school easier for him to boost his self-esteem! Not discipline him and make him try harder! But now that they have become the "Patriarchy/establishment," they are upset that the young'uns are treating them even worse then they had treated their own parentals...lol. But like father, like son.. Well maybe eventually, teachers will even have to make housecalls and pay students to teach them???

I agree. Just remember, this author does not represent all Chinese mothers - she only represents herself as one subset of the Chinese diaspora. I mean, I doubt she can even read/write Chinese and probably doesn't even know what "Daoism" is. So, she is hardly a Chinese spokeswoman. In fact, her life aspirations seem more oriented towards academics and materialism as a means to mainstreeam majority assimilation in the West here. That said, I do agree with some of her points, and disagree with others. Mainly, I agree that the Old World hard work ethic has been replaced in this country by the liberal "feel good" ethos. But, the grasshopper who plays all summer will find himself starving in the winter...which we are seeing now with our national bankruptcy and outsourcing of anything that requires actual work. I don't happen to agree with her personal definitions of success, though. Good grades aren't bad...but they only get you so far in life. Interpersonal skills are incredibly important both professionally and personally - and should not be dismissed. Classical music is irrelevant today and requires no creativity. Meanwhile, she apparently knows nothing of any real Chinee culture (spirituality, health, etc) to pass down to her kids. So, she is basically just raising robotic, obedient, left-brained, mainstream nerds. Not necessarily a bad thing, per se - but just sayin'... If these were boys - they wouldn't get laid until they hit 30 with that background and training! However, ultimately parenting and your own lifestyle boils down to what works best for each individual in their own unique circumstances. There is no "one-size-fits-all" approach. If the author's approach works for some people - great. It would be a mistake to blindly forcefit it where it wouldn't work well, though.. The key is to figure out what works for each unique person and not just be a pushy stage parent. And of course, this whole story has been exagerrated and sensationalized with provocative statements in order to sell more of her books...

Hard to say...I've noticed that ever since Ashton Kutcher started dating Demi Moore a few years ago - women have been seeking out younger and younger men. Madonna only dates boys half her age now, female teachers fvcking their students has become a startling trend and have in general women seem to have set their sights lower now. I would agree that someone making strong progress in qigong will show anti-aging effects, though..

Well, women prefer drama & games to get their emotional highs. That's why they love watching soap operas and reading romance novels full of plot twists, etc. Otherwise, they'd just be watching straight pr0n with no plots. Hey, are you single? Umm.. *bat eyes* Wanna f***? Uhhh...okk *action* The End

One religion posits a dualistic universe created by a monotheistic, anthromorphized creator God. And because his creations are separate from him - they require the acceptance of a demigod intermediary to get closer to him. Another religion posits a nondualistic, dependently-originated universe with no one in it at all. So without any subjects, all subjective morality loses its relevance as well. So, if these are merely "semantic" differences - then what common model are they both defining, just using different terminology? Is there or is there not a "God" separate from his creation? Which view is right, true & accurate? Remember, the road to Hell is paved with good ("compassionate, sensible, detached, loving, humanitarian, responsible, ethical"), yet ignorant & incorrect, intentions...
-
Well according to the doctrine of nonduality (which Buddhism includes), there also is actually no "you" or "him." There is no one. Moreso, believing that there is a "you" that is separate from "him" is the main cause of suffering. Thus religions that reinforce this dualistic separation are ultimately further reinforcing this delusional suffering. As is Dolly Lama by implicitly reinforcing both notions with his statement there. Although, they might help one initially...such rafts would only get one so far and then outlive their usefulness (from the Buddhist perspective).

You could always pretend you are having non-ejac O's, lol.. Spermatorrhea is a medical condition where involuntary ejaculation occurs often in an excessive manner. Basically, it's like excessive jing leakage. What's interesting though is its symptoms: This condition is even addressed in TCM:

Cool! I follow a similar practice and have had quite similar results.. Especially with dreams now. I haven't become fully lucid yet - but have developed the ability to wake myself out of them at will. Like when they become too worrisome or like when I was about to have sex in one the other week and potentially lose my load.. Whew. I think gaining control over your lust and dreams signifies that your jing is filling up.. Next is qi.

Lol umm, have you considered...faking it? Uhm, why do "all" women "need" men to ejac? Heck, why does she even "need" you to orgasm? Tell her just to worry about her own pleasure, not yours..

So, you personally witnessed this "juggling" act? And what is a "complete strike" or "thunderbreathing?" -

Some great points in the last few pages, especially... I just wanted to add that in many of these groups, it's actually many of the more ambitious students themselves who voluntarily engage in arse-kissing, competitiveness and ego battles to establish and climb the "ranks" of a hierarchy within. I remember the first few workshops in the mainland - they were wondrous and everyone felt very heart-centered. Everyone was participating and sharing together openly. But a few years later, there had developed a far more commercialed, elitist and competitive vibe amongst the "inner circle" of student "facilitators" (originally "teachers"). I don't attribute this to Max being manipulative. In fact, I attribute this to Max being too unmanipulative and only being forced to play some office politics when things have finally spiraled a bit "out of control." I think Max is just more interested at heart in bushwhacking outer spiritual realms and not engaging in all the petty office politics of lay society here. So, he is not well prepared or skilled in group management in that sense. He prefers a very hands-off approach, as opposed to a micromanagement style. Of course, both extremes have their pros & cons.. And again, I don't see this only in Kunlun. I've seen the same pattern in most groups, actually. Students take a workshop and immediately want to become teachers/teacher's pets because they are hungrily seeking egoic self-worth. This is without even any encouragement needed from the teacher at all. Nobody just wants to be a mere student first...lol. -
^ Sounds like good advice. I heard that Kan has been practicing celibacy for a long time now. I don't know how true that is, but if so it could possibly demonstrate the eventual difference in results..

How does one become an immortal according to taoism?

Interesting.. Well, I don't think anyone ever attained physical immortality, so Taoists gave up on that a long time ago. Although some have attained extreme physical longevity. And I think "immortal" also has some different connotations than the Chinese word xian. So, that adds some slight misconceptions too. But remember, Ch 33 of the Dao De Jing says: One who may die but will not perish, has life everlasting. So, this acknowledges physical death (for mortals and immortals alike). The difference is that an "immortal" does not "perish" with the death of his body. -

It involves becoming a fully Heavenly yang shen. Not unlike the Tibetan Buddhist Rainbow Body jalus. One could also interpret this as symbolic of alchemical immortality that could parallel the popular mythology about carp transforming into dragons after swimming upstream and leaping over the "Dragon's Gate." Of course, "Dragon Gate" also just "happens" to be a popular sect of the Quanzhen (Complete Reality) school of Taoism. Now, in MoPai, it is said that once you pass Level 4 (technically 5), you can "take all your yang qi with you." That would be a preliminary stage of immortality. Although you really have to reach above Level 30 to become a "true immortal." So, the basic concept here appears to be: becoming entirely yang. Remember, the founder of the Quanzhen school was Wang "Chongyang." I believe chongyang meaning "heavy yang." -
Mexicans share a hard work ethic and are well-versed in many practical trade skills. They can all get together and throw up a garage in a weekend. This is similar to the Amish. Rednecks are also very skilled in hunting and somewhat in living off the land. So, although these groups typically get mocked & maligned in our pop culture (since our puppetmasters purposely want to promote consumer reliance and discourage self-reliance), they are actually the ones who would fare the best surviving off the grid, when need be.. A shared subculture also helps to ensure that everyone is more or less contributing and taking equally. You run into problems when you try mixing lazy freeloaders with industrious hard workers. Communes quickly sink to their lowest common denominator. That's why Socialism works best only in homogenous countries where the people are more self-reliant by nature. But even if you had a good mix of people - I think you would still suffer some inconveniences due to poor economy of scale. For example, if you needed a laptop, some manufactured car parts, specialized services, medicine, etc. - you might still have to outsource back on the grid for such needs. But I think you could easily live off-grid as much as you can - and then just supplement on-grid when you need to.

Lol, first off, I'm finding your Chinese prof increasingly questionable... First, he promotes Falun Gong as the "highest Buddhist qigong." And now, he's giving you some very distorted and outdated societal views. Multiple wives have always been extremely rare in China - more the exception than the traditional norm. The vast majority of married couples in China - are just that - couples. You might as well say that having tons of groupies are a "tradition" here in the US (even though it only applies to a miniscule handful of rock & jock stars). But, it essentially boils down to the fact that extremely alpha (high-testosterone, powerful, wealthy, etc) "yang" males are extremely desired by women. And as PUAs say, women would rather have 1% of a "yang" man than 100% of a "yin" man. Or how 20% of men get 80% of women. So, when demand outstrips supply like this - you will simply end up with multiple groupies, concubines, wives, baby mamas, gf's, fb's, etc etc. Whatever arrangement it comes in - the basic Darwinian phenomenom is still the same - a surplus of p*ssy for these select men. Meanwhile, all the remaining men will suffer a deficit of p*55y because it is essentially a finite pool. And many men are actually already suffering from terminal singlehood in China already. They are known as "guang gun" (光棍) or "empty branches." China's ruling class probably actually likes this though - because it gives them a larger military/labor force while reducing population. These guys will make ideal potential cannon fodder or lifelong factory workers - as they have nothing else to live for and won't be breeding.. They are in essence, worker bee drones who will make life better for the rest of society, if not much for themselves. So, it's all just a big Game Theory game. Hence, Buddhism says that life on Earth is suffering and Taoism ultimately views indulging in worldly pursuits as a waste of lifeforce from the real endgame of alchemical immortality. After all, you can't take all your toys and hoz with you - but you can take all your yang. Of course, at the lower levels, Buddhism does advocate a Middle Way approach and Taoist practices can still enhance one's ordinary well-being & life. So, it's just really up to you how far you want to take them...and if you want to support or transcend the duality. Again, great probing questions!

Well, you have to start off with a burning desire for spiritual liberation - like a man with his hair on fire or a drowning man gasping for air. Anything less and you will likely fall off the bandwagon for various other reasons (laziness, boredom, sex drive, etc). But, it gets easier as you go along... Remember, as your jing fills up, your neediness for sex decreases. When Jing is very strong you can remember your dreams. When the Qi is full; one does not feel hunger. When the Shen is full; one does not need sleep. All of this takes a long time to slowly cultivate though...which requires very strong self-discipline and patience...which requires very strong will...which again, requires a burning desire that is stronger than all other desires... You are merely at base camp and it's a looong way up, buddy! If you lack the will (kidney power) and the drive now...then fugheddaboudit! Maybe try again in 10 years..
