I've never played an online game like that (probably won't ever), but a friend's kid told me about how she played "2nd Life" quite a lot. She was really into it, met various people from all over the world and had interesting conversations... but also to me it was so disconnected from real life that it kinda freaked me out. But, hey, I'm here on this board an awful lot. Everything is getting so so far removed from (what I see the ideal as) an organic farming community. "Gotta get back to the land, and set my soul free. We are star dust, we are golden... "

I still do kunlun, but not regularly. I'm pretty sensitive: I only do it for a few minutes (literally). It works well for me in that context. A few minutes, circulates chi, does good things. I don't rely on it as my main practice. I like it sitting still. Even in the workshop (when I did it for quite a long time over a couple days) my body wasn't thrashing around or anything: mostly still. But energetically a lot was going on and I was getting a lot out of it. I still really appreciate it as a practice, in moderation and in balance with other things.

I want to spend the rest of my life meditating and training in neikung

Rightee-o. In the beginning, a lot of effort goes into opening up and it seems like it's never enough. In later stages, the difficulties kind of reverse: You're so open that you look for ways to ground and to be able to 'digest' well the immense meals that are coming through you. One of the best ways to speed things up (to open through the beginning stage) is to spend time with an enlightened teacher, regularly, at least until you open considerably. You soak in the high-vibe, and things change. Then a "few hours" of meditation a day will be probably more than you can stand, literally, on multiple levels. Physical work in nature provides a very healthy balance for that inner work. The monastic and hermit traditions provide models for preferred lifestyles. Whatever modifications you do to those to suit your needs & means, apply your diligence and creativity. It's just a fact o' the world that you'll probably have to put in a long course of work in order to set yourself up how you'd like. At least that's how it is for most of us. good sailing, best of luck, Trunk -

Consider a porn filter against internet porn. OpenDNS.com is a free service that re-routes your dns requests through a filtered database. Requires no local software, works for your entire local network (wireless, etc.). -

Intentional Communities listing (ic.org). They have a free online listing of intentional communities of all descriptions. Some spiritual, some not. Most of them are some variety of green. -

I'm watching the last episode of BSG via SurftheChannel right now. Wow, just wow. The whole series has been ... well, "good" hardly describes it , but this finale: I'm pausing it every couple of scenes to go do something else and absorb. Every scene is that good.

If I might add, imho, that is the secret of the golden flower: That if you concentrate in the smallest center of it, that it unifies with the "one light". The "one light" is concealed within the golden flower. You just have to stay there serenely, concentrated, and let it refine. This is very different from "chasing the winds".
-
Cleary's process as two part: 1. Concentrate in the center and refine. 2. Refinement culminates in concentration integrating with Openness. My graphical two cents.

Excellent post. Many good points. Well said. ~ later edit ~ Read the article, glanced at the site. That guy is up on science and conveys it easy-to-understand. Interesting read.

Not affiliated with an organization. On the loose. This forum is not run by any certain school / tradition / teacher. (Though of course individuals vary.)

Serene concentration in the center (which integrates with The Big Light) is a skillful means that deals with the energetics without chasing them around. imho.

at risk of repeating what has already been said, ... my basic understanding of what they mean by "turning the light around": Wilhelm's basically says that you should take some of the light from the upper center and circulate it around. Cleary's that your usually outward directed awareness should be concentrated into the center, where it refines and unifies with The Big Gold Light. Are we on the same page here? Should I just go back and read the 126 posts of this thread from the beginning? Both of the above approaches (even if they're not what the books are saying) has it's place and is helpful, ime. Trunk

*grumble* Well, this thread looks interesting - and I haven't kept up on it at all. Gonna have to read from beginning.

What a fun thread. Instant inclusion in TTB's 'greatest hits' album. (Out on vinyl in December.)

I've always felt this sort of thing, that the smile was forced and so counter-productive. Just never clicked with smiling as a 'practice'. Yup. I find if I connect my head my heart and my lower belly and 'brighten' them a little on the inside, that does it for me.
