The term biophotonics denotes a combination of biology and photonics, with photonics being the science and technology of generation, manipulation, and detection of photons, quantum units of light. Photonics is related to electronics and photons. Photons play a central role in information technologies such as fiber optics the way electrons do in electronics. Biophotonics can also be described as the "development and application of optical techniques, particularly imaging, to the study of biological molecules, cells and tissue". One of the main benefits of using optical techniques which make up biophotonics is that they preserve the integrity of the biological cells being examined. Biophotonics has therefore become the established general term for all techniques that deal with the interaction between biological items and photons. This refers to emission, detection, absorption, reflection, modification, and creation of radiation from biomolecular, cells, tissues, organisms and biomaterials. Areas of application are life science, medicine, agriculture, and environmental science. Similar to the differentiation between "electric" and "electronics" a difference can be made between applications such as Therapy and surgery, which use light mainly to transfer energy, and applications such as diagnostics, which use light to excite matter and to transfer information back to the operator. In most cases the term biophotonics refers to the latter type of application.

Increase is adding what is lacking. As for the qualities of the hexagram, above is wind, entering, and below is thunder, active. Acting so as to enter gradually, entering without either rushing or lagging, it is therefore called increase. This hexagram represents using reduction in the midst of increase; it follows on the previous hexagram liberation. In liberation, the yang energy is active and gets out of danger, gradually growing and maturing, adding good that is lacking. However, to increase good is not possible without reducing what is not good. Increasing good and decreasing what is not good, increasing and increasing again, reducing and reducing again, until there is no more increase or decrease possible, finally reaching the state of utter good without evil, one is then done. Therefore "it is beneficial to go somewhere." Since beginningless time people have accumulated faults and defects, the seeds of habitual compulsion growing deeper as time goes on; now if they want to do something of benefit to essence and life, they cannot accomplish this unless they first extract the seeds of these compulsive habits. But the seeds of habitual compulsions cannot be removed all at once; there are processes, procedures. This does not admit falsehood—it requires orderly progress, putting forth effort at every step, increasing the mind of Tao, decreasing the human mentality, increasing sane energy, decreasing aberrated energy. Only when there is such reduction within increase is it possible to succeed, to make it "beneficial to go somewhere." The benefit is simply in one's practice producing beneficial phenomena. But to practice what is beneficial, it is important to have a beginning and a conclusion. If there is a beginning but no conclusion, one's acts are still of no benefit—there is no gain, but loss. Therefore the way of gain and beneficial action lies in concentrated will, making thoroughly dedicated effort, made from within difficulty and hardship. Only when one has dissolved the seeds of compulsive habit of time immemorial will one be able to restore one's original being. Therefore it is also "beneficial to cross great rivers." "Great rivers" are extremely dangerous; there one's life hangs in the balance. If one can go through extremely dangerous places, then wherever there is no danger one is at an advantage. According to the qualities of the hexagram, acting so as to progress harmoniously, gradually applying effort, without rushing or lagging, this is the path of increasing and decreasing according to the time. *** 5th yang: When there is truthfulness and a benevolent heart, there is no need to ask—it is very auspicious. Truthfulness and benevolence are charismatic qualities in oneself. When positive strength is correctly balanced, the great Way is completed, and one is integrated with the celestial design, it can be trusted that the benevolent heart is therein, and there is the auspicious good fortune of fundamental goodness. The benevolent heart is the innately good heart. When the innately good heart is always present, one looks upon myriad things as one body, and sees others and self as one family. Then each word, each action, is beneficial to the world. The mind of a person of the Tao also can be trusted to have the charismatic quality of benevolence. Once one has a benevolent heart, one also has the charismatic power of benevolence. It is like the wind blowing on things—all fly up. This represents those with status aiding and benefiting people without borrowing the power of others.

"Upon what does this depend?" I asked. G.'s answer was very vague. "There is a definite period," he said, "for a certain thing to be done. If, by a certain time, what ought to be done has not been done, the earth may perish without having attained what it could have attained." "Is this period known?" I asked.

If you are doing such practices diligently you should probably expect a bit of both - gradual shifts as well as sudden openings. Its not a one and done kind of thing. The subtle body has far more layers of complexity than the physical, as it is primarily sourced from materials that are not limited to this physical lifetime alone. The "subjective" experience of a functional and active Anja chakra can be wildly different across any given number of people. So is the depth and speed of the opening process itself, which can also vary considerably along the process as a whole. While Id say its possible someone could seek to "open the third eye" and not actually achieve it, this would be something I consider to be a lack of discipline, lack of effort, lack of desire, etc. etc - or a situation where they were forced to give up on it at some point for whatever reason (like death, etc.). If you are seriously committed to these kinds of practices and focused on this particular thing as a certain goal to achieve, its eventually going to happen - but it could take many years or even decades (or longer...). A sudden opening experience may or may not be a radical change - sometimes its a small change that happens suddenly. And a big change can happen gradually, or it can happen suddenly as well. Many changes will happen. But yeh I doubt there is a common pattern beyond the full range of variety that people experience... as we are talking about the flowering of uniqueness itself in some respects. Its like asking about the shape of snowflakes - they are all similar, but different, but they are all unique in the same way. The base configuration or the starting point is usually quite different for each person. However there is often a resonance effect where a student is energetically (intuitively, emotionally, etc.) attracted to teachers that are of a similar character and configuration - which makes the entire learning/teaching process much more natural and auspicious. This is somewhat related to that cliche phrase "when the student is ready the teacher appears". In regards to the first part of your question, I have strong personal reservations against the institutionalization of these sorts of teachings for a number of reasons. The master-apprentice model seems best - and its not broke so dont fix it. But, as always - to each their own. And yes, any implication of a 2-way street is also an applicable assessment. Both people are learning many new things from the process, not just the "student". Also, if we picture the teaching/learning situation as climbing a stairway of increasing understanding, there is a definite principal in effect regarding evolutionary matters whereby you cannot move on until you have successfully placed someone on the step you currently occupy.
