What is your favorite Qigong System and Why?
Pero replied to Raymond Wolter's topic in General Discussion
He who teaches himself has a fool for a teacher. And who has himself as a teacher has a fool for a student. -
Ah yes, sorry should've made that distinction, this is actually more like what I meant.
-
Does this mean that now if I learn some patented asanas, and then I teach one to someone else who would find it beneficial, I could get sued by whomever is owning the patent? Do you think that in a way, lineages are the ones that have the real patents on the asanas?
-
Say what? Why? For example, I know some people in the US who are students of Younge Khachab Rinpoche. I've never met him, but I only heard good things about him. So I decide to invite him to give teachings. He accepts and I organize the event. Now, why would people because of the fact that I don't have much of a past connection with this teacher use that as a reason to not come to the retreat? After all, they wouldn't be coming to listen to me - the retreat organizer, they'd be coming to listen to the teacher. And if they do use that as a reason and then attend a retreat with this teacher which is organized by his long time student instead, what is the difference?
-
You are assuming that retreat organizer = the teacher, but in most cases that's not true. Teachers rarely organize events themselves. And I also doubt they're available much to people who aren't their students. Retreat organizers however, should be. But then you should understand that they may not necessarily know the answers to all these questions, since like I said, they're not the teacher. Here I guess what matters is, is whether the organizer is newbie or a vet. With the former it's pretty unlikely he'll be able to offer you good answers.

... What are your thoughts on patenting asanas?
-
I think I vaguely remember him being mentioned on E-Sangha as legit, but a little unconventional. Sorry I can't be of more help.
-
Certainly, him probably being a Hindu and all.
-
Hah, I learned 3 versions and every time I see Baduanjin on the net I see yet another version.
-
Oh my... I'm shocked you think this. Being an addherent to abberations like Hindu Buddhism or the Western invention called "all paths lead to Rome" in general. More seriously though, what??? What do you mean patent on Yogic asanas? Who thought of such a strange thing? It sounds ridiculous.

Uh yeah.. Gods. Not a creator. These gods are poor saps just like us, living in samsara, except they have much longer life spans, more enjoyment, less suffering and things like that. Yes but this Quan Yin is a Buddha/Bodhisattva, not a creator god or something like that, and Buddhists can also become just like her.

That's interesting, I didn't think Tulku Urgyen was one of his critics, I thought they were friends. May I ask where you heard this?

Advaita and Buddhism are the Same After All

It is the potential we have to become Buddhas. Of course this hasn't been mentioned in this thread several times. Not at all. -

Also, I don't think there is anything called the Buddha of 32 marks. A Buddha is said to have 32 marks though. -

I don't know from personal experience obviously and I haven't bothered to check the historic proofs. But you're welcome to do so. -
Advaita and Buddhism are the Same After All

He didn't assume, he knew through his insight. We (Buddhists) however, since we don't possess his insight (yet), take it on faith for the most part. -
Advaita and Buddhism are the Same After All
Pero replied to forestofclarity's topic in General Discussion
Saying Buddhism is not the same as Advaita or Taoism or what not, is NOT sectarianism. Sectarianism can be within a religion, not amongst different religions. -
Buddha mind? Guess you still need to work on that one ey?

I don't know about arrogant westerner but the former is true. Although then how much guidance is needed depends on the student. Otherwise you're free to follow traditions which don't require transmission and guidance from a teacher. Well if you're not a child and have a reasonable ammount of intelligence, I imagine you should be able to evaluate the teacher and path before committing fully to it. Guru knows best in relation to what he is teaching, I wouldn't go ask him on how to fix a computer. LOL, you too.

I can't change my sig. I copy text into it, then click save (or whatever), it tells me the text is too long. The reason it being too long is that it's for some reason completelly filled with code or something.

The Gurus give you the path but it's completely up to you whether you walk it or not. Why?
