In some cases maybe. Speculation can lead to belief and belief to resistance. Speculation may facilitate discovery of truth but may also create barriers. There is nothing wrong with saying "I don't know." Plato in his Republic, argued that opinion was below both ignorance and knowledge. Ignorance is a not knowing and thus open to achieve true knowledge. Opinion is a block in the path to knowledge. The solidifying of opinions is a danger to knowledge.

I wonder how many people are aware of how the majority of their meat is processed? Videos of factory farming are enough to disgust me, I can't imagine what I would feel if I visited one. In reference to the person you were replying to, many people seem to think that because a metaphysical idea is ancient it is somehow unconditionally valid. The natives go to where to elk are and kill the elk... this is hardly reason to beleive that the elk want it this way. The elk go there because of explicit learned time and the humans do the same. And I am not saying that some of the ancient theories are not wonderful, many are. But many are also founded in ignorance about the workings of reality... which of course is something we still do not know. Bits and pieces come along as time moves on.

I think I will take the general world wide scientific stance on the "pain" of plants... there is none. They have no nervous system and no central perceptive organ to process pain. What good would a feeling of pain do a plant anyways? Its not like they can avoid it. You have to understand that feeling pain is an adaptive ability of some creatures, not a universal quality. It allows creatures to avoid things that may cause them death, and thus no further procreation, as procreation is much more difficult in the animal kingdom than in the plant. I think copious studies, observations and reason are much better views than the word of a horse whisperer in a book you are reading.

Well, you would be ignoring your circadian rythm. People who do night shift work, sleeping all day, are generally more unhealthy. Your are resisting your biological clock that, to an extent, determines periods of high mental function. although I always thought it was romantic to be a awake during the night.

My mental illness? I do not think I am any more lost than most people. Just because you have found a ship to ride and a destination in mind does not mean you can get there. I know about the Chinese side, I just do not think it is very applicable to my life philosophy. And I have some problems with it, I do not think culture and religion are exempt from criticism, and neither am I. I never claimed to be a Taoist.. nor do I want to be. I merely have an interest in certain aspects of the philosophy of it. I am interested in the religious side too, but that does not mean that I do not question its claims. This fourm is non secterian, I can talk about whatever aspects of Taoism I wish to, as can everyone else.

I live in canada, and it has to be secular. The infusion of culture here would not work well any other way. In my opinion the US government is far more christian influenced than Canada. Maybe it is just my perception, but the last time I checked most of the US states still don't allow gay marriage, abortion, some have the ten commendments on their courts, say God bless america constantly.
