I guess you guys want teeth like in all ancient skulls we find.

The philosophies are already mixed from the beginning. But I agree that this particular book is not ideal.....

These are two VEDANTA books. These are not Buddhism books.

Advaita Vedanta comes about in the middle ages when Gaudapada borrows from Madhyamaka. http://books.google.com/books?id=sx12hxoFVqwC&pg=PA88&dq=The+Method+of+Early+Advaita+Ved%C4%81nta+It+is+not+a+matter+for+dispute+whether&hl=en&sa=X&ei=wr8ZUZ7iGceR0QGHuID4Cw&ved=0CDMQuwUwAA#v=onepage&q=The%20Method%20of%20Early%20Advaita%20Ved%C4%81nta%20It%20is%20not%20a%20matter%20for%20dispute%20whether&f=false Even the Upanishads themselves are "strongly influenced" by Buddhism: Hajime Nakamura, Trevor Leggett. A History of Early Vedānta Philosophy, Part 2. Reprint by Motilal Banarsidass Publ., 2004 page 284-6 "As was pointed out in detail in the section titled Interpretation, many particular Buddhist terms or uniquely Buddhist modes of expression may be found in it." "From the fact that many Buddhist terms are found in its explanation, it is clear that this view was established under the influence of the Mahayana Buddhist concept of Void." "Although Buddhistic influence can be seen in the Maitri-Upanishad, the particular terms and modes of expression of Mahayana Buddhism do not yet appear, whereas the influence of the Mahayana concept of Void can clearly be recognized in the Mandukya-Upanisad." "Although Mahayana Buddhism strongly influenced this Upanisad, neither the mode of exposition of the Madhyamika school nor the characteristic terminology of the Vijnanavada school appears."

I don't know what teachings asunthatneversets follows but..... Dzogchen is about recognition vs nonrecognition. Knowledge vs. ignorance.

"Persians developed the term "Hindu" and that they used it as a geographical, rather than a religious, term." ---Dr. Deepak Sarma http://www.huffingtonpost.com/deepak-sarma/should-hindus-study-hinduism_b_1083986.html

And? Thats sort of the whole point behind the tantric traditions in general. Tantricism is related to medieval kingship in India. Read Ronald Davidson's "Indian Esoteric Buddhism". Moreover the concept of "chakravartin" is there in Hinayana too.

How do pastors, rabbis, Hindu priests etc. support themselves?
-
This implies a dualism between Buddhism and Hinduism. Vajrayana sahanas have Ganesha, Lakshmi, Saraswati, Parvati etc. And all our mantras start with Om too.

Lineages do die out, especially because of the Chinese invasion. Thats why Dilgo Khyentse tried to save them as much as possible. There are some other lamas doing the same thing right now by travelling to Tibet.

Are they saying that a guru is not necessary in Vajrayana? Because that would make no sense. You are free to take out the central component of Jesus out of evangelical Christianity, but then its not evangelical Christianity by definition.

Whats wrong with "the current institution that is Tibetan Buddhism"? I am assuming you are speaking metaphorically, since there is no monolithic institution of Tibetan Buddhism. I would say the function is to eliminate delusion.

The whole point of Buddhism, from the Hinayana to the Perfection of Wisdom Sutras, Madhyamaka etc. is to put a higher perspective before our own deluded experience.

We believe Dzogchen, and in general Buddhism, as special. Not something to be dismissed as "any other teaching".

ChNN is great. But any lineage holder is fine.

Of course most lamas have not realized Buddhahood. Thats why there are lineages in the first place i.e. to trace back to an individual who was a Buddha. Are you one of those people who think that tulkus are the literal reincarnations of the last guy? As long as a tulku has received the full teachings and lineage, the dude is a lama.

What do you mean by "extensive teachings in tummo"? Are you talking about genuine teachings, or some New Age reiki tummo? And what is the lack of understanding?

I've got nothing more to say, then to say its a matter of religious faith. There is nothing in Dzogchen that is rational. Terma and rainbow body are not rational.
