  1. [TTC Study] Chapter 1 of the Tao Te Ching

chickens & eggs stillness & movement bathwater all over! "But Tao gave birth to One. Y'all know that..." "One is before Dao... Dao arises with the ten thousand as it describes their function and operation. What is prior is Singularity.... NO DAO can be spoken of." Both your ideas suggest Dao can be placed in a sequential manner. What if Dao is something else? What happens to your orderings if Dao, instead, is the impetus, the reason - the Why ? For example... Dao is why the Singularity arose Dao is why the One gave birth to Two: the differentiated and undifferentiated within the One. Dao is why the Two gave birth to 10,000 things Maybe Dao is the ever present Why of the Way. No sequence required. (-: warm regards
  2. [TTC Study] Chapter 42 of the Tao Teh Ching

stay calm as you approach this gateless gate (-: for it is both eternal and ephemeral, ever present, everywhere. warm regards
  3. This is lienshan's post in the main taoist section. It needs to be up here, too, imo. Bold emphasis, is mine; New topic title, mine. Original thread at: http://thetaobums.com/topic/28216-duality-yes-or-no/ ******** The word DUALITY has naturally TWO modern English definitions: Dichotomy duality was the definition that Shen Dao preferred. Division into two usually contradicting parts. The phase of the moon, when half of the disk is illuminated. Yin and Yang, the fluid and the vapor. Wave-particle duality was the definition that Laozi preferred. The exhibition of both wavelike and particlelike properties by a single entity, as of both diffraction and linear propagation by light. "a tao or to tao" put in Laozi's own Words from chapter 1, line 1. Zhuangzi was either Zhuangzi or a butterfly dreaming, that it was Zhuangzi. Shen Dao invented "THE GREAT ONE" to make his definition work. Laozi's definition works as is. ********
  4. Home Taoist Altar

Niice (-: Have you decided when and how you will consecrate it? Actually, that might be too private a question as doing so is intimately personal. May it surround you always with good blessings. warm regards

  7. Home Taoist Altar

When you're ready to post something...if you click on the 'More Reply Options' button, next to the 'Post' button - it will give you a preview, and below the preview is your post that you can edit if need be. Hey - the links up there worked fine - I like what you picked and really like the incense burner! Nice choices. (-:
  8. Home Taoist Altar

    very pretty!
  9. It is, yes, and 'Reality' is usually the term used for every-day real life, etc. Between the two words, maybe "Absolute" would be a better word for that spot? Hard to pick a word...especially for 'Tao'. (-: warm regards
  10. Home Taoist Altar

So how goes the efforts? Wish I could see your pics but I dont do facebook. Do you have it set up yet? What scent incense are you going to use?

  12. Is "zero" greater than one?

As each are undefined without the other, how could either of them be "greater"?
  13. Very true for when/if we only rely on the 'word/character' for understanding, regardless of time or language. The good news is, as you surely must know, there is so much more that also comes in through what is written. Do you not see the common essence that underlies: "... light from darkness, sparkle, light within darkness, mysterious light in the void, pointed light that never fails, bright light, sky light, small light, unknown light, light out of darkness, Immortal spirit, spirit light, sage, etc etc" ? I do. (-: Allowing all information to inform means allowing all information to inform. I'd think a mystical fella like yourself would be the first to agree. warm regards
  14. Wow. lienshan, is that your translation? the upper portion flows and circles like a shamans chant powerful stuff and yeah Laozi all over it. (-:
  15. To me, the simple concepts <Wu> and <Yu> are stabilized by their interaction (which I perceive as unboundaried). As you see it otherwise, the addition of the actualities solves the perceived stabilization issue nicely. I've reviewed all the models and find them internally consistent, and not in gross conflict with Laozi thought or the architecture of the concepts. As long as everybody defines things clearly... all should be well. You might have later difficulties with the term "Absolute Realitiy" in the place and manner you're using it; my impulse was to switch the words to: Reality of the Absolute (or similar), but that might be cumbersome and I can offer no alternative. This is really nice work, most enjoyable to explore. (-: warm regards
  16. Well... what bubbled up may not help your efforts. It seems all my words and ideas have fallen away, except for this: man follows earth earth follows heaven heaven follows tao tao follows what is natural Tzu-jan, zi-ran, is more than 'natural'. The word/character points to a spiritual naturalness. Not 'spiritual' in the way someone might say: "I'm not religious but I am spiritual" ... but in the way that we inherently, and instinctually, feel and do; the source of our natural Te. Tao is more than its own unboundariedness; tao follows tzu-jan because there is no way it could not. Tao is the impetus of spiritual naturalness. It is the 'why' of the first arising. It remains the 'why' of all arisings. warm regards
  17. There's a couple of us here that didn't need to hear it. Glad to know you're one of 'em.
  18. lienshan, dawai, hi I find no conflict between the presentations, just different starting points on their ideas... my take leans towards the former. To me, they all say the same thing; differences again perhaps being the starting point... My preference is Laozi because it's less wordy. LOL It's nice to see the consistancy between the ideas. (-: Thanks lienshen, dawei, for sharing those. I yield to you two and others to discuss the finer points. warm regards
  19. Good morning (-: If I had a magic wand - I'd toss all the following words out of the window: Dual. Nondual. One. If for no other reason, because the words also represent concepts that are something other than the ideas you present, ideas that we share. A long time ago you expressed a similar wish about "Te" - that, like "Tao" was, would have been better left 'un-converted' to the english word (Virtue). Now, it seems, the encumbered english words Dual, Nondual, One, are being forced to fit onto ideas that may be better served in some other manner. I dont know yet what that manner might be... Thank you for the larger images of the models, time for tea and reviewing them. Who knows, maybe something brilliant will bubble up. LOL warm regards
  20. I agree with your hesitations... not only for the word 'dual' but moreso for the word 'nondual' (because its use in other traditions brings confusion). Limitless and field might be closer words, or rather more useful words, especially when trying to discuss these things without extraneous baggage... but there still might be a risk in trading a stuck 2D mindset for a stuck 3D mindset. Oh well, at least it's a jump forward. Maybe. LOL warm regards
  21. Ambigrams and the Tao

Thanks Vaina (-: Anything that speaks to the topic is most welcome, John. If it's super-long sometimes a link to where it's already on line works better... but any portion you might want to emphasize, or obtain feedback on, should come into your post. Looking forward to learning about your ideas. warm regards
  22. An Altar for Sree

This thread stems off of the Home Taoist Altar thread found here: http://thetaobums.com/topic/28018-home-taoist-altar/ In that thread, in case you've not been following, newTaoist requested information about having a Taoist altar at home. Sree, a delightful poster, preferred to keep the conversation on something else so I thought maybe we can all help sree in this thread with his/her needs, i.e., to create an Altar that would be suitable for what s/he calls "Philosophical Taoists" to pray (or whatever) to. (-: Here are some of sree's posts, which shines a light on his/her perspective, and will help us help sree in creating an appropriate altar. The numbers are the post numbers in the above thread for reference and to make sure context wasn't lost... Any ideas or suggestions for sree for an altar? I'm sure any input you'd care to make wont offend him/her; sree seems to be congenial enough about not staying on topic. ***** Here ya go, sree! Thread is yours. Hope this gets you started in finding what you seek. (-: warm regards
  23. duality YES or NO

Bravo. I hope you dont mind... I copied this up to the textual studies area..so it was in both places. (-: warm regards
  24. Yes! Yes! Thats why I put the word 'Tao' outside of its circle on my diagram. It was the only way I knew to convey this. I need to ponder the rest of your post...just wanted to share that part right away. Glad you're joining in. (-: warm regards
  25. I wasn't able to find a larger image of this on your website... so I zoomed in on your Avatar to read the words...and guess what! If you merge together your Wu and Yu rectangles - bang! - you get the circles in circle item on mine - bang! - and the underlying structure of the diagrams are identical! Seems we were both pointing at the same thing in only slightly different ways. fun stuff (-:
