Cool, you write pretty young for an old bum .

edit this one may have gone a little too far.

A possible solution might be talking to his teacher about it, making sure she knows, will keep an eye out and take action if needed. And if that doesn't do much, calling the offending kid's parents.

bit of a side topic, but being a business major (minor computer science) I thought most of the classes were way to theoretical and quite frankly bull shit. Yet at 18 years old I wasn't mature enough to face the world. I had no particular goal, fire or direction. College was a time to find direction, discuss great and silly thoughts with my peers, a chance to enjoy myself before entering the long and somewhat dreary real world of 9 to 6 work.

Yes, but studying computers only won't make you a well rounded person. We don't know what we Don't Know. There are things considered classics (ancient and modern) that we've never been exposed to and without some instruction often can't fully appreciate. A good education should go beyond vocational matters. It should open up your mind to great ideas. That's the idea behind universities since ancient Greek days. Cause part of the problem is a work is the most important thing attitude.

When I didn't have much time I found using guided meditations when I first woke up or was going to bed gave me a taste what practice could be like. Especially some of the Taoish ones. Like Minke DeVos's at Silent Grounds the Tao Basics CD. I also liked Master Chen's CDs from Wudang and Gil Marin's stuff. By listening to them in bed it felt like it wasn't eating up productivity time. I think they helped me set up a good practice once my schedule eased up.

I'd bet the 'shirt fronting' is metaphor for accusations and tough questions. Thus no bet, but I'd hope to see Abot win the day. on the third hand in most mixed martial art contests unless a stand up fighter (boxer) has specific training to avoid take down and trains in certain defenses, the wrestler (judoka) tends to close the distance and win.

Let's see, I believe he's married and from the drawing of him playing the drums I'll guess mythmaker is 41, & colorful and blonde

hmnn, well you gotta have the bitterness to transform it. And even without the transformation, we grow by learning to eat bitter. I just had a wonderful meal of Korean Bi Beem Bop, lots of veggies, including those pickled and fermented. Its a type of meal that missing in the American diet because it plays up so many sour and bitter elements. Yet very fulfilling.

I think for any diet system, its nice to make the 'big pot' each week. Some stew or soup that's there when you want it. Though I wonder if that runs counter to superb freshness and spontaneity of Taoish thought.

Let me be non PC and say dog. Perhaps miniature poodle if you want a light snack or greyhound if you want fast food.

I'm all for the thoughtless state, its the flinging himself into the fire and instantly dying that may kill ya.

We get so full of ourselves, an occasional bout of disgrace is the bitter flavor that improves us.

What would you tell your 20 year old self?
thelerner replied to qvrmy11vz's topic in General Discussion
What would I tell my 20 year old self? Nothing. It wouldn't change him and it'd sound like a book of cliche's anyway. Instead we'd just hang out, back in the early 80's. -
my eyes tear, my nose does too, thus showing another outlet.

I've found myself agreeing with arguments on both sides!? In many gi gong traditions you have 100 day abstinence recommended. Ten years seems to go from a practice to a life style. It'll certainly affect those you get into relations with and alter the trajectory of your life. I think those who succeed find it become there natural state, those who don't are continually fighting it. What I mean is certainly it'll be hard at first and you'd have to stick with it, but after a fair amount of time, if its still an effort Or if your emotions or body are reacting poorly. Reexamine the practice. From what I've read true celibacy starts in the mind, losing the desire there first or moving the thoughts away from sexual. Then it requires a practice that uses the energy (circulates it??), which are out there, but above my pay scale. Cause stagnant energy can cause a laundry list of problems from manic behavior to physical problems.

I would say it is pointing towards untimely death of seekers.

Well, this isn't to develop fighting skills, but take a look at the local martial arts dojos. A good club might have a class for kids that young and emphasize respect, stance, tumbling.. lots of good game play.. It might be a fun outlet and just standing taller with confidence might help the kid be less of a target. Its probably more about the individual teacher then the martial art style. Again find a school that's fun, not one that tries to teach the kids anything to violent.

why people lived longer and were taller in the past?
thelerner replied to Desert Eagle's topic in The Rabbit Hole
yup, I only believe things that earn the right to be printed on the internet From what I studied a while ago we are healthier and taller then we were ingeneral the last thousand or two years or so. Course they're always outliers. Past a couple thousand year, its possible you're right. As long as there is sufficient food, genetics tends to move in the direction of sexual attractiveness, thus (maybe) we're seeing a slow trend towards taller men.. maybe bustier woman too?? -
Whoa, good luck to you with it. So much easier to fly under radar, but sometimes they get you. Or try.

I think its a worthwhile goal. Not an easy one though. In Ki-Aikido we had a breathing exercise that went for about a minute, usually less when the sensei was being nice. It probably took me a couple years before I was comfortable with it. The advantage is it greatly slows down thought and body functions. Once you can do it comfortably it can bring a great sense of peace, til then it can feel like asphyxiation!, so in learning its okay to cheat. Breath when you gotta, even as a short intake to keep the pace going and get back on track. A big advantage of long breath is your normal everyday unconscious breath will get longer as you practice longer breathing. Thus more oxygen and more efficient, full body breathing. Start easy, with 8-8 then go on. I use Chris Eckister CD from Silent Grounds. It has tone from 8-8 moving up to 48-48 that you can put into your mp3 on rewind and as you gain the breath cycle you can move it up to 10-10 (20 seconds) then 12-12 etc., There are many apps for it too. I like Insight Timer.

I don't know about definitions, but militant atheists can be every bit as annoying and pedantic as any fundamentalist. Infact, your militant atheist who has a chip on there shoulder and wants to remove all religion from everyone is sharing in the dark side of fundamentalism.

In the same vein. Let's say we're programming a robot. We can use English. What rules would we program in? Would we use the golden rule and how would that effect a robot without much needs or emotion. Its interesting how our needs create the need for the golden rule.
