We're here for good conversation and make some friends along the way, to be a community. Jump right in, start threads, ask questions, look for interesting threads and post your (relevant) thoughts. For the first week you will be restricted to ten posts per day but after that you can post as much as you like. Also, until you’ve posted fifteen times in the forums, you’ll be a “Junior Bum” with somewhat restricted access and will be allowed only two private messages per day. Has anyone here read this translation/commentary of the Dao de Jing?
thelerner replied to Wayist's topic in Daodejing
I've always found reading the DDJ so peace giving that I may as well spring for an excellent version on my phone (in Kindle app$9). It's a therapy book, you pick it up with a problem, read a stanza or two, and the problem is put before greater perspective, diminished. -

No, but reading a sample of it on Amazon, it's translation and depth of explanation are impressive. -

Long ago a member relayed a story about when they were in a Taoist conference in China. They opinioned that Lao Zi was a composite character from history; and they were kicked out of the conference. He is sage and/or Taoist pantheon God to Taoists. Here in the West we tend to be a bit more open. Years and years ago, Max Christenson's Kunlun was the latest greatest thing and we had a couple groups going down, taking the seminar together- hiking, partying and looking for aliens. . Any retreat in a beautiful area would be ok by me. even if there wasn't any alien hunting involved.

What interesting things can you do (now), what interesting things in the past?
thelerner replied to Welcomer's topic in General Discussion
Thanks, you must doing some interesting things. Anything in particular? I just received an Occular Quest, a cheap Android based virtual reality headset. I'm looking forward to unboxing it. Except for occasional trips to the kitchen and washroom, my son is living in the Matrix or maybe Player One universe. <and sorry for coming across so anal. Tomorrow I'm off to the doctor to get the stick out of my butt> -

Nothing is more important than breath. I think there was a zen fable about it.. A young monk said he knew the most important thing and began to repeat a long sermon. Hearing it, the master grabbed him and dunked him under water. Kept him there a long time. When he let him up he asked the monk 'Now what's the most important thing?' Still gasping the young monk said 'Air!' and old master nodded sagely. Anyhow, few or no one does long breath holds off the bat. They're trained for. In Aikido we'd sit in seiza and do long one minute breath cycles. It took me a year and a half to get it. The good news is increases come pretty fast. The better news is slow breath, slow relaxed mind. Its very valuable in everyday life and makes meditation better. If anyone's interested here's an easy 5-5-5 breathe to tones https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C4-uVcQwWYs Once its comfortable- here's 7-7-7 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0NORdNNI6Y&t=93s at 7-7-7 one is breathing 3 times a minute instead of the usual 12 to 15. It does a body good and the tones are 30 minutes long, a nice amount. Course, that's what I like. I expect everyone has some interesting things, spiritual and otherwise that they do. -

Its not about the Burning Man thread, that was an example. You get Reported alot, which has led to discipline, suspension and bans. For a long time we didn't have active moderators so lately reports went unseen. Now that we do, please be careful about making multiple picture threads in a row. That's what my PM to you was about. You're a visual guy and I respect that. I don't think most people have a problem with 1 or 2, or even 3 in a row, especially if they're on the subject. But when they stretch beyond that, members consider them spam and Report you. I am hoping you can ease up on the longer multi-picture threads in a row to keep yourself from being reported. It is your choice and consequences. Again, you're free to make the picture and songs posts. Most of them are quite good, but when they come one after another, some considered them spam and you get Reported. P.S hopefully back to our regularly scheduled OP. -

Nungali, you miss the point. The PM sent was a reminder to Limahong not to make 7 or 8 picture posts in a row. In the past when he's done that its been reported as Spam. These days it could get him a warning point. I wanted to warn him about it. Speaking as moderator, since my post here is about not spamming a thread with pictures. You reposted more pictures for some reason. Since the whole lesson here is about picture spam, I'll ask you as a moderator to remove them from your post. You got a ban last month and this week picked up a couple more disciplinary points. Kould I simply suggest my assessment is to remove the pictures in your post for the reason stated above. Thank you. -

The paradox is- much evil is done in the name of Good. You see that happening in Nationalism and sometimes religion. Communism is beautiful in theory but in practice it quickly turns increasingly authoritarian. Often Wu-wei is best. Doing nothing. Respecting the actors.. letting them sort things out by themselves. Messy but rules from above, even when benign, can backfire badly. Not always, devils are in the detail, but good action is flexible.

I found the first line here interesting and I didn't want to distract the original thread. How common do you think energy blockages are for 'newbies'? We hear about them here and on the internet, yet I wonder if thats the squeaky wheel? ie 90% practice, get nothing.. quit. 5% keep going have some benefits then quit. 3 or 4 % take it all the way, make it a decades long practice, and 1% have problems and they're the ones who write here on the internet? I'm pulling these numbers out my ass (or decades of dabbling), but against a popular writer's method or video series, what do you think the %'s are? My thesis, not very common, <1% but that could still be high with enough practitioners.

Actually it wasn't energy blockages as much as energy problems I was originally thinking of. In that an energy blockage might keep you from feeling things, but an energy problem being feeling too much. Getting stuck in a bad state of mind, body or both.

Spooky ghost discussion - experiences, theories and reasons
thelerner replied to Miroku's topic in The Rabbit Hole
I enjoyed the show 'The #1 Ladies Detective Agency' which took place in Africa. While investigating a murder the main character remarked that Americans lacked a sense that Africans had.. the sense of past violence/murder in a place. Natives had it, in Americans it was totally lacking to the point they couldn't imagine it. We keep death, an every day occurrence, far away, behind walls.. maybe what the writer voiced is true. Most Western religions are old enough to have a custom of waiting with dead bodies til burial, so as to sooth there spirit. I was listening to a non-fiction audio where the wife acknowledged that her husbands spirit stayed around the hospital room for a few hours after his death. In that I find greater experiential truth then most old haunting stories. -
I'm reminded of the writer Robert Heinlein- “Sin lies only in hurting other people unnecessarily. All other "sins" are invented nonsense. (Hurting yourself is not sinful -- just stupid.)” <<addon my definition would be a bit wordier. I don't like the word 'sin', too emotionally charged. Too likely different parties using the same word mean different things.>> A girl I went out with long ago explained her vegetarianism like this "If I don't have to kill something, I won't". Not my way, but an approach I highly respect. She simply didn't want to add to the pain in the world, if she didn't have to. That was her rule. Whereas I.. I'm willing to ignore, some of the pain I cause. I guess we each have to draw up our own rules. Acknowledging that life requires adaptability to thrive. At best we pick our wise men and our paradigms consciously.

I think in the tik tok world there are many certain truths. I have one drinking glass on this table. You can play semantic games, you can play philosophic games but there is only one glass on this table. A real truth captured by photo. Again you can jimmy it up, cause certain illusions but in a court of law, its proof beyond a reasonable doubt. On the other hand philosophy shlimosophy. This gives me a better feeling for what truth is: There is Truth, the truth of the Truth and there is Peace. The truth is "the boy stole an apple", the truth of the Truth is "the boy was hungry" and Peace is "nobody stole anything, now, give the boy an apple." -Nachman of Breslov

When are locked threads necessary and when are they an abuse of power?
thelerner replied to moment's topic in The Rabbit Hole
Sometimes a lock is temporary. Othertimes, its a not a bad idea to restart a thread, letting members know you want to keep it on track and flame free. (assuming the re-starter is not the 'flamer/antagonist') Sometimes rephrasing the topic in a more neutral or universal way helps.- 13 replies
