Neowise is here- https://www.space.com/comet-neowise-visibility-july-2020.html Brightest comet in quite a while. See it, if you can, won't be back til 8020ish. 'When and where to look in the morning As a morning object, the comet's best views will come during a three-day stretch on the mornings of July 11, 12 and 13, when it will stand 10 degrees above the northeast horizon, 80 minutes before sunrise — the beginning of nautical twilight. Your clenched fist held at arm's length measures approximately 10 degrees in width. So, on these three mornings, the head of Comet NEOWISE will appear about "one fist" up from the northeast horizon. The sky should appear reasonably dark at that time with only the light of the last quarter moon providing any interference. As the minutes tick off, the comet will be getting higher, but the dawn sky will be getting increasingly brighter as well. After July 13, NEOWISE will drop rapidly lower and swing more toward the north-northeast. By July 18, it will appear only 5 degrees above the horizon at the start of nautical twilight. And only a few mornings later its altitude will have become too low to see it at all in pre-sunrise sky. Evening visibility But as its morning visibility diminishes, there is good news: Comet NEOWISE will become prominent in the evening sky after sunset. That will also mean a much larger audience will be able to see it during "prime-time" viewing hours instead of having to awaken during the wee hours of the early morning. Comet NEOWISE will be visible about 80 minutes after sunset. (Image credit: Joe Rao/Space.com) The first good opportunity for evening viewing begins on July 12, when the head of the comet will stand 5 degrees above the north-northwest horizon, 80 minutes after sunset (the end of nautical twilight). By July 14 its altitude will have already doubled to 10 degrees, and by July 19 it will have doubled yet again to 20 degrees up by the end of nautical twilight. By then it will have moved to above the northwest horizon. So, we at Space.com feel that the best time to view the comet during the evening will come during the July 14-19 time frame. We also strongly recommend that observers should seek the most favorable conditions possible. Even a bright comet, like this one, can be obliterated by thin horizon clouds, haze, humid air, smoke, twilight glow and especially city lights. We especially emphasize that last factor: the farther away you get from a metropolitan area, the darker your sky and the better your view of NEOWISE. Binoculars will enhance your view. And more good news: No moonlight will brighten the sky, as the moon will be a waning crescent and visible only in the morning sky through July 20. On successive July evenings the comet will grow fainter, but it will be farther from the sun, setting later and visible in a darker sky. As we move into August, the comet will be very well placed for observers with small telescopes.

Strong solar storm may bring chance to view northern lights to midwestern, northwestern US Wednesday night By Katy Galimberti, AccuWeather.com Staff Writer (http://www.accuweather.com/en/features/trend/strong_solar_storm_northern_lights_viewing_conditions_midwestern_northwestern_us/54501408) December 30, 2015; 10:57 PM ET A recent solar storm may create an opportunity to see northern lights in the United States as far south as Iowa and Nebraska on Wednesday night. After a flare erupted from the sun on Dec. 28 and sparked a coronal mass ejection (CME), a view of the aurora borealis may be possible for those in the northern parts of the U.S. "Areas along the Canadian border will have the best chance to see the northern lights," AccuWeather Meteorologist Dave Samuhel said. However, if the solar storm proves strong enough, the dazzling display may be visible as far south as Iowa and Nebraska. Those in the Ohio Valley and Northeast will be out of luck regardless of whether the aurora develops or not due to widespread clouds, according to Samuhel. "Clouds are expected to dissipate through the night across the Upper Midwest and northern Plains, leading to some chances to view the event," he said. "The Pacific Northwest will have the best viewing conditions due to clear skies." Some interior western areas may have to contend with valley fog, obscuring views. Along with the brilliant light display that may be visible to some, a flare of this magnitude could also have adverse effects on GPS, radio frequencies and cell phone and satellite reception. me> I've always wanted to see the Aurora Borealis. They're talking about tonight. Damn, I think its cloudy here, but for those of you Northerners who have a clear view, eyes to the skies.

Sustainable Agriculture and Gardening
thelerner replied to senseless virtue's topic in The Rabbit Hole
We need our gardens in our front lawns, full of flowers, fruit and vegetables. Not in the back. They're what we should be proud of, not mono-culture lawns. Every house should have a fruit tree or two as well as a compost pile. You should be able to feed yourself healthily walking down the street lane. Never underestimate the power of a garden to make the world a better place.- 2 replies

Looks like a democratic tsunami up ahead. How should they behave?

I see some truth in this, in that Gandhi and Martin Luthor King Jr inspired millions and caused political and actual reforms in the world, whereas it wouldn't have worked in say Nazi Germany or a repressive regime. I also see the fact that the marches and protests due to Floyds death are rocking America. There is soul searching and changes going on. Not immediate or as far as some of the Left would like, but reforms are happening. Thus I think the US still has a conscience. We also have push back but then doesn't every movement. -
On a tangential subject, though maybe not. since its about a Godzilla that swings 5 ways. I'm talking about Shin Godzilla, an official Godzilla movie with a strange new take from 2017. It was one of Japans top movies of the year. In some ways it goes back to the roots- of Godzilla as metaphor for Nature vs man's hubris. Yet it also has a new twist, throughout the movie he evolves from one form to another. His 4rth form being the classic one, yet at the end its a strange metaphysical form. Being after the Fukishima disaster, the Japanese government is thoughtful, slow and ineffective, the Americans too militaristic. Its a movie loved or hated. I've been wanting to see it, but can't find it on streaming.

Everything we call civilization was invented in the last 500 generations—way too short a time for our bodies and brains to re-optimize. We're a bunch of forest primates in a totally unnatural environment, trying our little best. Someone needs to give our species a hug. Course 25 years might be a generous and modern number to consider a generation, as one goes back in time I'd assume a generation would be less, maybe strikingly. Perhaps 16 to 22 would be closer. . k . .

No one is slaughtering the unarmed left in the US. While we'll always have some examples of police brutalities its not the 60's or 70s. I have sympathy for the antifa movement but truth is by punching a couple bad guys in the face they gave the Alt-Right a huge boogie man to rally and fund raise against; a threat and a Cause. Not worth it. The mindset of considering police as the enemy is not helpful. Not calling looters and vandals criminal, likewise is not helpful. Pulling weapons and marching armed in the current environment will not help any cause, imo. -
I remember a story about a chemist. Late one night he had an enlightenment experience, where he felt the Oneness of the world and learned its deepest secret. In his ecstatic state he wrote it down before succumbing to bliss and sleep. He woke up the next morning and looked at the word he'd scribbled. It was Benzene.

that seems like a half baked answer

We want there to be, because that'd make life easier to explain. Real easy, bad things aren't our fault, its there's. The problem is, the further outside you put the problem, the less real power you have to solve it. Diseases, poverty.. caused by witches, or that group over there. It plays to our fears and prejudices. A source of power for the most abusive. An Evil master is not my paradigm. I don't think it's needed to explain the world. There are competing interests, limited resources. Fear, greed and ignorance, forces within all of us, that make the world run the way it does. Your bad/evil leader may be no different then your bad/evil shopkeeper, though he has more power, in this case to do bad things on a bigger scale. Thats not to forget there's much good out there, often overlooked. But burning things down is easier then building them. The man who read and destroyed Hitlers diary found he thought of himself as an idealist. Rationalizing all his evils as ends to a means.

I don't know, the video raises more questions then answers for me. Like, why does Godzilla seem so British?

It's been flaring up for me too. Insomnia is the 'disease' but the problem is too much thinking and computer work at night. I need to kill the electronics early. Maybe read, listen to music, meditate. No news, no websurfing, no writing. Be in bed by 10:45 or lose my best sleep window.

I was under the impression it was a shoe based illusion. That required viewing from behind, thus his early admission to 'stay there'. He is a magician and illusionist. On the other hand through hard work he's done some mind body accomplishments that are amazing ie incredible breath holds, staying in ice. Staying on tall platforms for days. Things requiring amazing training and discipline. His levitation imo is about a trick shoe and controlling the watchers angle of view. <one man's magicis another's engineering>

drinking water with food - bad ? why ? how bad is it ?
thelerner replied to waterdrop's topic in Daoist Discussion
My mom was always on the hunt for the hottest coffee. Sending back cups that weren't hot enough and frequently needing refills with hotter. She seemed to like it near boiling. Whereas I'll have a cup and nurse it throughout the day, moving through hot, warm and luke warm.. enjoying each phase. -

I'm drinking some coffee now, having it black with a bit of cinnamon in it. From a Westerner viewpoint its a good source of anti-oxidants, from an Eastern it's a bitter thats stimulating bile and the digestion, something Western diets generally don't have enough of. -
Can't argue with that, but remember War gets the press, Peace doesn't lead, cause it doesn't bleed. So historians tend to ignore it. But it seems we're lucky if each generation only gets one war. Yet..on a personal basis, most of us here haven't fought. That's good. Course cold wars, fought on someone elses land with there blood and destruction can be the very worst. All in all, we're probably at a pretty peaceful time in history just now. Not perfect but better then historical standards I bet. So.. enjoy it while it lasts.

At times brilliant, at times seemingly random. Gotta love the Morissette soulful wail I wondered how 'Thank you India', fit in with the other Thank you's, such as Thank You terrorists. Here's the answer: Thiago Mello 5 years ago This Song is the result of Alanis trip to India (thank you India)... as she said it before she spent her life chasing people´s dreams and hopes for her and trying to meet their expectations. Things like you have so much talent you have to sing, you will be a great artist, etc. But when she achieved all that she still didn´t feel peace. India through meditation and silence (thank you silence) showed her the truths in life. This song talks about these illusions of modern life. Powerful Lyrics

Seems like Song of the Dao is bothered and complaining about people who are bothered and complaining about his posts. If your main contribution here is to complain about others, it seems like a grouchy old mans kind of activity. You may want to consider posting and getting involved in threads that you like; can say something positive about.
