Well I am always having experiences ... often with very intense sensations (including with Mark Griffin who I sat with twice). What I meant by no clue is that I don't know enough about the long, varied history of energetic terms to say with any authority what kundalini is or is not. I only have my experience. Here's another quote for the pile (emphasis mine): Via Kurt Keutzer, Kundalini FAQ What is the difference between prana and kundalini? What is the difference between qi (or chi) and kundalini? First let us try to relate to concepts from the same tradition - prana and kundalini. Prana has been translated as the "vital breath'' and "bio-energetic motility''; it is associated with maintaining the functioning of the mind and body. Kundalini, in its form as prana-kundalini, is identical to prana ; however, Kundalini also has a manifestations as consciousness and a as a unifying cosmic energy. One could ascribe these same aspects to prana as well so past a certain point these become distinctions without differences. From the subjective standpoint of an individual actually experiencing the awakening of kundalini I have found three completely different opinions: The first opinion is that a pranic awakening is only a prelude to a full kundalini awakening. Tibetan yogins that I have encountered consider the activation of prana (Tibetan: rlung) as merely a prerequisite for the activation of kundalini (Tibetan: gTummo). What's attractive about this viewpoint is that it explains the difference between the experience of simply having pleasant sensations in the spine and the much more powerful experience of having a "freight-train''-like full kundalini experience. The second opinion, espoused by Swami Shivom Tirth for example, is that prana and kundalini are absolutely equivalent and that it is not meaningful in any way to describe a difference between kundalini rising and prana rising. When posed with question as to how to distinguish between pleasant sensations that show some pranic-activity in the spine and the much more powerful experience Swami Shivom Tirth said that the difference is not in the nature of the activity but in the consciousness that observes it. If the consciousness that experiences the pranic activity is seated within the spine (or more correctly, the central channel, known as the sushumna), then the experience is felt much more powerfully. The third opinion, espoused by the modern hatha yogin, Desikaran, is that pranic awakening is the true experience to be aimed for and kundalini is actually an obstruction. Desikaran sees the kundalini as a block in the central channel and thus the kundalini must be "killed'' to make way for the prana. This is the most unusual view of the three. The Chinese concept of qi (or chi) can be safely identified with the Indian concept of prana. If all this seems confusing - don't worry, you're in good company. My conclusion is that these are all different terminologies for dealing with a common set of experiences. Any one of these viewpoints is adequate for describing the full range of experiences. What is probably more relevant is to distinguish two different experiences which are often confused. In one an individual experiences some pleasant energizing electric energy running along the spine. This experience itself brings about a wide range of experiences and results in vitality and sensitivity. Another very distinct experience is the experience of kundalini entering the sushumna and rising up the spine. As soon as kundalini enters the sushumna this experience will completely overwhelm ordinary waking consciousness. From the moment that kundalini enters the sushumna there will no longer be a distrinction between the subjective consciousness which experiences and the object of experience. This experience much more profoundly transfigures consciousness. Sean

Wow. That is just how the sunsets in Costa Rica look. Boootiful. Sean
  3. Hello from Pennsylvania

Hey, welcome. I've from Philadelphia, PA originally and now I do live in Costa Rica. It's magical. Where were you thinking of moving?
  4. Kunlun/Yogani

Me? *looking over shoulder both ways* Well, let me say first ... I have no clue. I do think terminology means or at least meant something specific within each tradition at one time. But traditions grow and change and blend and perhaps now more so than ever. So IMO at some point soon we're going to have to come up with you know, not to sound too technical, but new shit basically. That said, here is my view in a nutshell since you asked. I think out of the void there is vast primordial energy, whatever you want to call it. It moves and squiggles and squirms in varying densities and textures and vibrations and makes up the entire manifest universe. So if you want, you can keep it simple I guess and leave it at that ... there is just energy, there is just what is, open up to it, love it, surrender unto it. Use your heart. But on the other you can have some fun and be a spiritual nerd and start naming the hell out of stuff and debating about the names (seriously fun, not being patronizing). So within this endless infinite river of energy there are a shitload of distinctions the mind can make -- stars, trees, dirt, love, music, patacones, Costa Rican sunsets, this is jing, qi, shen, this is shiva and shakti, this is the holy spirit, this is the virgin Mary, this is Jesus Christ in my heart, this is an enraged demonic ancestor, this is alien moonbeams, this is ancient Egyptian transmission, this is kundalini, this is extraordinary energy, this is ordinary boring nothings on tv and I'm out of cold beer energy ... I know this is kind of a wide angle lens answer and maybe not specifically what you were asking but hopefully it sort of stabs in the direction of a response. What do you think? Sean
  5. Kunlun/Yogani

Yeah, hah, I've thrown this same quote up before without much response. To me the implications are pretty profound. Perhaps Kundalini is simply a word for a certain kind of result/symptom that can arise from a certain kind of approach to core channel purification. Other approaches (ie more classically Taoist) reach the same level of purification but via means that do not create a Kundalini-esque response. Sean
  6. Kunlun/Yogani

I like this view (emphasis mine). Via The Heart of Yoga by T. K. V. Desikachar "If we want to understand hatha, kundalini, and tantra yoga, we must look closely at a concept that is central to all three, namely, the concept of kundalini. The fundamental idea, shored by all types of yoga that talk about kundalini, is that there are certain channels or nadi in the body through which prana can enter and leave. There are many nadi, but in the context of kundalini we need only concern ourselves with the three most important ones: ida , pingala, and sushumna, all three of which run along the spine. Sushumna runs straight up the spinal column, whereas ida and pingala cross over the spinal column and back a number of times. The ida nadi passes the left nostril and the pingala nadi passes the right nostril. Both have other names such as ha and tha, the two syllables that make up the word hatha. Ha represents ida and the cool energy of the moon (candra); tha represents pingala and the hot energy of the sun (surya). The nadi meet at the six points in the body recognized as the cakras. Figure 33 (see book) shows the locations of the cakras along the central axis of the spine. There is one between the eyebrows, one in the throat, one in the heart region, one in the navel, one just above the base of the trunk, and one at the base of the spine. Ideally, prana flows unhindered along all these passages, but this can only happen when they are not blocked by impurities and rubbish. Normally prana cannot reach sushumna but only flows through the ida (ha) and pingala (tha) nadi, and often insufficiently at that. When it is possible for the prana to enter the sushumna nadi, the prana of ha and tha unite (yoga), which is why we call the process of getting there hatha yoga. The sushumna or central nadi is regarded as the ideal path for prana. If prana flows through this central passage, it is concentrated in the body to such a large degree that its effects can spread throughout the body in an ideal way. None of it gets lost outside the body. When I was describing the purpose and effect of pranayama, I said that the state in which prana leaks out of the body is one in which avidya prevails. How and where prana flows in the body, therefore, has direct consequences for our state of mind: if we cannot keep enough prana in the nadi, if blocks hinder its flow and it cannot keep flowing in the right direction, it dissipates outside the body and results in the mind becoming dark and restless. Conversely, the collection of prana in the body brings about inner peace and true understanding. The free flow of prana in the sushumna is not normally possible because something blocks the passage. This block is symbolized by a coiled snake, the kundalini. The concept of kundalini is confused by many imprecise definitions, and even a text such as the Hatha Yoga Pradipika contains contradictory descriptions of it. The definition that follows is derived from what in my opinion is the best, the clearest, and the most coherent text on this subject, the Yoga Yajnavalkya. There kundalini is defined unambiguously as an obstacle. What is to enter the sushumna at some stage or other through your yoga practice is, according to this text, not the kundalini itself, but simply prana. Many books say that it is the kundalini itself that rises up through the sushumna, but this does not make sense if we follow the Yoga Yajnavalkya, one of the oldest texts that deals with this aspect of yoga. One of its central concepts is that prana and the various forms it takes in the body are linked to the practice of yoga, and it says that if we are successful in our practice, the kundalini is burned up, making the way clear for prana. A snake killed while lying in a curled position unfolds and stretches out, the muscles no longer able to keep it coiled. It is said that when the fire in the body, agni, has killed the snake, the kundalini unrolls and the passage is open to the flow of prana. This does not happen overnight. Even when parts of the kundalini are destroyed, it remains capable of blocking sushumna for a long time. If you closely consider this image, it becomes clear that kundalini is another way of depicting what we call avidya. In the same way that avidya can become so powerful that it totally prevents us from seeing purusa, kundalini blocks the prana and prevents it from rising through the sushumna. The moment the kundalini is burned is the same moment that avidya ceases to exist. Then prana is able to enter the sushumna and slowly move upward. We can also understand hatha yoga as part of raja yoga, which is defined as the process in which prana, the friend of purusa, gradually rises upward. When it gets to the top, purusa unfolds and the king within us emerges. When the emphasis is primarily on the concept of kundalini, then we speak of the practice as kundalini yoga. Hatha yoga is so named when our practice focuses on removing the division between ha and tha. Lastly, the term tantra yoga may be used in describing a yoga practice based on kundalini. In tantra yoga the emphasis is on certain energies that are normally squandered being directed in such a way that they can reduce the blocks that stand in the way of the prana. The practices of tantra yoga are distinctive; indeed, the word tantra translates as "technique" in the positive sense, meaning a skill or craft. In tantra yoga the focus is on the body, and a wide range of connections and relationships between the body and other aspects of the world and cosmos is made."

  9. Mak_Tin_Si

I see no pontificating or chest thumping anywhere, where are you seeing this? It's really simple. No one has ever made as many new topics in such a short period of time as this guy has, ever. And Kunlun threads, which at their peak represented maybe a quarter of Mak_Tin_Si's topics and never all from the same member and never all on the same day, frequently caused people to get get even more disgruntled than this. I think everyone is being pretty respectful considering someone is essentially spamming the forum, useful or not useful content aside, and even after being asked to stop. Sean

  14. Hey Mak_Tin_Si, I'm really glad to have you on the forum. Things can get a little chaotic here sometimes, but I believe everyone here has a good heart. I hope you stay and continue to share your knowledge with us. *deep bow* Blessings, Sean
  15. Thanks Santi. dao zhen, points well taken. Mak_Tin_Si, I've created you your very own honorific section that you have full control over here: http://www.thetaobums.com/Mak-Tin-Si-f93.html You might also consider posting some of your material into the Contributed Articles section: http://www.thetaobums.com/Contributed-Articles-f20.html And don't hesitate to post in the main Taoist Discussion, just try to keep it to 1 or 2 new topics a day max except for in case of emergencies. Best, Sean
  16. Nice handstand scorpion! hua_na_da, I agree the original poster was rather heavy handed with Mak Tin Si. Mak Tin Si, you are loved here. I hope you stay and continue to contribute. Just do your best to combine your ideas to one thread. For example, you could have combined all your "intro to terminology in taoism again" topics into one single topic that you keep adding to. Blessings, Sean [edit]PS - Someone trying to sell something here is not a reason for being called out. I really don't understand this view. As if the revelation that someone has something of value they offer for trade or money invalidates their contribution. Bullshit. I encourage commerce here. I think people that devote their lives to the spiritual evolution of human beings should make more bank than doctors and not have to hide it.
  17. Mak Sin Ti, please be respectful of the community. Starting a topic is an intention to begin a conversation with the community. Try to imagine that when you start a topic, you are going up to a group of people, saying hello, and then saying "I'd like to hear what you think about this ..." If you are consistently creating more than one topic a day, it's the online equivalent of talking about a lot of stuff that you want to talk about and without listening very deeply. Bad combo. If you want to advertise on the forum, pm me, I'm open to running a banner for your website in the header space for reasonable fees. Sean
  18. Best Topics of 2008

Thanks. I hope someone finds it useful. And keep 'em coming! I'll probably send the email out on Monday or Tuesday so please tell me if there is a topic you enjoyed that I missed. I realized that I totally forgot to even go through the personal practice or book club sections. Sean
  19. LOL. I thought these up in like 5 minutes years ago when I was setting up the forum. I've practically begged someone to think up a new hierarchy but so far no takers.

Hehe... Lezlie build that site for Ghita. They are in LA with SteveP right now plotting new shenanigans. We all had unrequested front row seats to Stephane's downward spiral. Not pretty. On a good day he makes RJ look like the Dalai Lama. On a bad day ... well, for what it's worth I suspect that Stephane may be a true sociopath. I mean it. I have stories you would not even believe. Scary scary stuff. I worked with Stephane closely every day for over a year. He even moved right next to me for several months in Costa Rica. Regardless of my sympathy for the guy, for he is in truly in a lot of pain, I can't in good conscience recommend anything other than running in the opposite direction of him, his material and his groupies. To anyone who is even remotely fooled by the spiritual facade of iG, I urge you to find a coherent alternative. Anything. What Stephane needs is drug and alcohol rehabilitation and real psychiatric treatment, not more money and encouragement. Sean PS - Juggler is a really great guy. Haven't met him personally yet but I'm good friends with his buddy Chad and have seen his stuff. I have a lot of respect for DavidD as well.

Anyone who wants to submit an images for this folder feel free to do so. As many as you want (within reason). The image must be 115x115 pixels. If you have a nice image and you don't know how to crop it or work with it, just send it to me and I'll crop if for you. The image doesn't have to be obviously related to Taoism. It can just be an image you find beautiful or interesting. No vulgar or offense images please. Email your submissions to [email protected] Or just reply with them linked in your post. Thanks, Sean.
  23. Just Be Happy

I quit smoking, about three weeks ago now, which has given me an amazing opportunity to witness and release a lot of stuck patterns within myself and in my relationships. I noticed specific patterns between myself and others that became so exaggerated and polarized at various stages of the physical, mental and emotional detoxification process that they just could no longer be ignored. For example, my tendency to hyperfocus on, and aggressively pursue various areas of study became so intense during the last few weeks, that there were nights I poured over books and tracked down Internet texts for uninterrupted blocks of 4-6 hours straight, furrowed brow, stern face, a tight fist inside my gut, Lezlie long asleep while I hunted and dissected philosophy concepts as if I was performing some pressing, intricate surgery that my life depended upon. It was creepy, I started to feel like that guy in the movie "Pi". I also found myself engaging in protracted and finicky arguments with people that got on my increasingly sensitive nerves. Some of you may have even been unfortunate enough to witness my recent tirade with Max on HT where I allowed myself to become so entranced I even suggested we meet and physically fight! Yet through all of this I've had many great little breakthroughts. One of them, a very simple realization, feels like like a little drop of light tingly blissfully in my abdomen, sometimes spreading downward into my whole lower tan tien, and upward, unfolding my heart gently. It's actually almost embarrassingly simple and obvious, but it never really clicked in my body, in my Being, before. The seed of my realization is: I just want to be happy. And as this little seed spreads it's tingle, it's cool warmth, I feel like it's touching and gently unravelling old stuck patterns in my mind and nervous system, and it's growing little branches that I think will become strong trunks that support other brances, that sprout leaves: I'd rather be happy, than "right". I'd rather be happy, than "overwhelmed". I'd rather be happy, than "Christian, Taoist, Buddhist", etc., etc. I'd rather be happy, than "understood". I'd rather be happy, than "approved of". I'd rather be happy, than sad that I am not as happy as I could be. I'd rather be happy, than always miserably overplanning/overanticipating the future. And also, the very important: Everyone just wants to be happy. This softens all judgement. Everyone just wants to be happy and are going about it the best way they know how, or the best way they have the courage to choose. "Evil", to me, is just a description for the densest form of ignorance in going about experiencing and sustaining happiness. It's so elegantly simple. Even religion and mysticism and magick and psychology all just boil down to trying to find genuine, sustainable happiness, don't they? The Buddha was surrounded by beautiful women and wine and he enjoyed his senses to their fill. And then one day he realized, this is no longer making me happy! There is something wrong here. This isn't real. My happiness is not built on a solid foundation. And so he went out to find true lasting happiness. That's what he was looking for. It's that simple to me now. Moving and mixing chi around, counting days of retention, opening chakras, getting to the 10th level of the Buddhist video game, these are just, at best, highly sophisticated techniques for tasting and ultimating abiding in True Happiness. Happiness is the Fire in which I believe all techniques should be thrown, so only the Truth remains. "I do not seek to follow in the footsteps of men of old: I seek the things they sought." -- Basho. Still, fear arises of not being "right", fear arises of the raw, pregnant, empty, simplicity outside of overwhelmed workaholism, of what I am outside my labels that I am sure must keep me sane and "who I am", fear arises of being misunderstood, disapproved of, of letting go of my judgements, of letting go of the walls I erect to keep me safe from "others", etc. ad nauseum. But I am nurturing this little seed of Light. It feels wonderful. So I thought I'd share. I remember being a very young child, and having this habit of running around my parents house dancing and singing "Be Happy" over and over to them and any other friends and relatives that were over. I was such an incredibly happy child. Then I remember one time my Father came home from work and he looked very sad. He sat down on the couch and was just kind of staring at the floor. I sang to him "Daddy, BE HAPPY!" and he slowly turned and looked through me and said, "Sean, sometimes it's not that easy. When you get older you will understand". I remember having a clear perception then, that he was confused. That Daddy had just gotten a little lost and forgotten that it really is always just this simple. How did I ever forget? Be Happy, Sean.
