Welcome aboard. You seem like a fascinating character. And someone whose mind is more hyperactive than my own. *bows*

5. surrender or suffer

Just going through a quiet phase. Happens from time to time. No worries, I will be back.
6. surrender or suffer

Cam, you can embed Youtube videos in a post with the code: Video-identifier is the little snippet of code after the v= in the URL to a Youtube video. So for example in the video above, the identifier is bWOYbXS8Dgk Also, why not post something personal about these videos you post? How did this video affect you? Etc. Just a thought. Sean

11. I've been waiting for this book to be published for well over a year, even nagging the author a few times. Finally shipping but I won't be able to get to it for awhile as I am busy with other adventures at the moment. Figured I'd pass on the word to anyone else interested though. Via Amazon.com The Mystique of Transmission The Mystique of Transmission is a close reading of a late-eighth-century Chan/Zen Buddhist hagiographical work, the Lidai fabao ji ( Record of the Dharma-Jewel Through the Generations), and is its first English translation. The text is the only remaining relic of the little-known Bao Tang Chan school of Sichuan, and combines a sectarian history of Buddhism and Chan in China with an account of the eighth-century Chan master Wuzhu in Sichuan. Chinese religions scholar Wendi Adamek compares the Lidai fabao ji with other sources from the fourth through eighth centuries, chronicling changes in the doctrines and practices involved in transmitting medieval Chinese Buddhist teachings. While Adamek is concerned with familiar Chan themes like patriarchal genealogies and the ideology of sudden enlightenment, she also highlights topics that make Lidai fabao ji distinctive: formless practice, the inclusion of female practitioners, the influence of Daoist metaphysics, and connections with early Tibetan Buddhism. The Lidai fabao ji was unearthed in the early twentieth century in the Mogao caves at the Silk Road oasis of Dunhuang in northwestern China. Discovery of the Dunhuang manuscripts has been compared with the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls, as these documents have radically changed our understanding of medieval China and Buddhism. A crucial volume for students and scholars, The Mystique of Transmission offers a rare glimpse of a lost world and fills an important gap in the timeline of Chinese and Buddhist history.

13. Nice review! Thanks for posting this.
14. Anal breathers are quite welcome, as are fans of Joe Rogan's tattoos. We are an all inclusive community. I'm sure that text box will evolve a lot over time. I'm playing with a bunch of things right now.
15. Everyone post some favorite quotes!

Golden rod and the 4-H stone The things I brought you When I found out you had cancer of the bone Your father cried on the telephone And he drove his car to the Navy yard Just to prove that he was sorry In the morning through the window shade When the light pressed up against your shoulder blade I could see what you were reading Oh the glory that the lord has made And the complications you could do without When I kissed you on the mouth Tuesday night at the bible study We lift our hands and pray over your body But nothing ever happens I remember at Michael's house In the living room when you kissed my neck And I almost touched your blouse In the morning at the top of the stairs When your father found out what we did that night And you told me you were scared Oh the glory when you ran outside With your shirt tucked in and your shoes untied And you told me not to follow you Sunday night when I cleaned the house I find the card where you wrote it out With the pictures of your mother On the floor at the great divide With my shirt tucked in and my shoes untied I am crying in the bathroom In the morning when you finally go And the nurse runs in with her head hung low And the cardinal hits the window In the morning in the winter shade On the first of March on the holiday I thought I saw you breathing Oh the glory that the lord has made And the complications when I see his face In the morning in the window Oh the glory when he took our place But he took my shoulders and he shook my face And he takes and he takes and he takes --- Sufjan Stevens
16. Jing and the Golden Flower

Holy shit. What an awesome post.
17. learning as useless?

Not sure if there is any canonical support for my view, but I imagine that in a sense these sages may have in fact considered their own views as completely useless as they cannot be used for much of anything. Unlike the point of most studies, the true Tao teachings confer no advantages to an individual IMO. At best they open a gateless gate to a process of unlearning. Sitting and forgetting. Then just being. Which never was missing to begin with, so what was there to gain?
18. FYI, this forum doesn't exist in search engines for most any Taoist term. In what way do you think finding TTB is easy? Most of the keywords used to find this forum are really obscure and/or bizarre, e.g. "anal breathing" and "joe rogan tattoo". Anyway, I like the block even outside of SEO purposes, I think it's well written and provides a useful introduction to the forum. Sean
19. Wandering Dharmabum says Amitofo :-)

Hey, welcome. You might be interested in this thread Taoist roots of Zen? and also, have you read The Mystique of Transmission yet? Best regards, Sean
20. FYI, one of the purposes of this information block is for Search Engine Optimization (SEO), so people into Taoism and related subjects can find TTB in Google, Yahoo, MSN, etc. more easily. Sean
21. avoiding sugar and milk

Yes, it will have a similar basic effect as sugar on your system once it's absorbed. But your same argument can be said of whole wheat vs. refined flour, or of eating an apple vs. eating processed baby food made from apples. The state of something going in is as important as what it turns into. For instance, there is a big difference between eating a potato with the skin vs. mashed potatoes. The fiber rich skin on the potato will slow down the speed which the potato is converted to glucose, so the energy is delivered into your bloodstream steadily. Whereas mashed potatoes are converted much more rapidly and give you a quick hit but that you can crash from. This isn't even touching on the larger differences between raw and cooked/processed, where important things (physically and energetically) are lost. My experience of pasteurized milk vs. raw milk is the difference between something important and nutritious vs. something gross and nearly poisonous that I can just feel is not good for me. Sean
22. Dao De Jing, 1st Chapter - 老子:第一章

Wow, awesome first post. That is quite a translation of DDJ, I've never read Merel's translations before. Reading it just now struck me really hard. Very profound. Thanks for posting, and for your thoughts. Looking forward to your contributions. Best regards, Sean

25. feeling lost...

Hehehe. I was wondering if someone would miss that. I was tweaking some things and it was complicating what I was working on so I just removed it. I added it back. Am looking on how to make it right next to the post text again though, the change I made is pushing it to a new line. Anyway, thanks for the feedback!
