  7. U.S. Law and Policy

Apple has always been 'pure' if you stay within its own online 'world'. So I'm not shocked that Apple banned Tumblr for having porn etc. What has that got to do with Tim Cook being gay? (Q stands for queer I think). It seems that some of the payment providers like Visa and Mastercard are insisting on this 'ethical' stuff - as in Patreon and also Paypal banning Milo, McGinnis and others - which is a political move of course - but at the same time they got rid of porn providers. On the face of it some of this may seem ok - not wanting kids to see porn for instance - but the problem underlying it is the question of who decides what is ok and what is not. There are only three choices as far as I can see. The tech companies, the individual or the government. Most people I think would favour individual responsibility - and for kids parental control of some kind. Government regulation could be objective (?) but probably not and only increases the level of control by the 'elite'. Tech companies deciding what you can and can't see and hear is in my opinion the worst choice. They are unaccountable, work as a cartel, biased and more importantly can be co-opted by government towards particular aims. Corporations under the heel of government is actually a core definition of fascism! It seems with its legislation the US has opted for making social media sites responsible for content which makes them de facto censors. Now you can argue that they are private corporations and can do what they want - but that only works in a free market where there are competitors. Where there is a virtual monopoly then it doesn't work - because people have no choice. Google particularly and to a slightly lesser extent FB and Twitter are monopolies. But when Patreon, Apple, Google and so on conspire to act together as they did with Alex Jones then users have no choice but to protest and abandon using their stuff.

She knows if it gets voted on she'll loose. So to delay and get some kind of weasel words into the political agreement is (from her point of view) sensible. Remember she replace 'f*** you Cameron I'm out of here' so at least you have to grant her tenacity.
  18. The Brexit Thread

What is a centre metre - do you mean centimetre?

She's going to try to get the EU to agree a time limit on the backstop I would think. If she is successful then she has a slightly better chance of getting the vote through. It's not completely unreasonable.
  20. Instead of reading Mitchell's book I would have thought - so what would you recommend for Nei Gong?
  21. I agree with your first paragraph - but you let yourself down with the second.
  22. We should be empty-of-Trump as expressed by this Democrazy wisdom master:

I have mixed feelings about Tommy Robinson. But one thing is certain, the establishment and media have succeeded in making him into a martyr and much more influential than he really should be. My understanding of UKIP is that it is actually expanding under Batten - and since the youtubers (Paul J. Watson, Sargon and Count dankula) joined it. The split with Farage is I suspect something to do with him positioning himself in terms of a possible Tory collapse more than anything. It is possible (but still unlikely I think) that Brexit will cause the Conservatives to implode and for a Brexit party to emerge, together with a Remain party which will suck a lot of Labour/centrist votes. Actually this would more honestly reflect the state of the nation than left/right. So maybe it would be a good thing. After all even if we have a hard Brexit there's no saying - especially if there are a lot of problems at first - that this will be the end of it - there will still be a movement to rejoin.

i watched a little of the March live on youtube and it wasn't that large - but there was no sign of the anti-protest - no violence and generally looked like normal people protesting. the Guardian reported more on the antis and for the main march tried to pick out individual protestors to make them look bad and racist. very biased reporting.
  25. Not only do we have a 'Talk Trump' thread as a kind of guilty pleasure we also have a thread about moderating the thread. Oh DaoBums you are spoiling us
