Traditionally he was of the Sakhya clan which settled in North India but some think may have been Scythian originally coming from Iran/Afghanistan. They were a fringe vedic clan who ruled by a kind of committee of elders and did not have a king. It has been speculated that the reason the Buddha challenged many Vedic principals like the supremacy of the Brahmin class was because of this. Going back to Bon - I think it is true that Bon did not really organise itself into a coherent religion until 11 century (or it might have been as late as 14th) anyway when it did so it took on some of the trappings of Buddhism hence any similarities which may have crept in.

You introduced the idea that the term Aryan and Aryan Empire was Nazi.
-
This is a syllogistic error.

Have I been misrepresenting what you said? Here it is - read for yourself.

Hi, I think your dates are a little out. The Buddha lived roughly 2500 years ago but Buddhism didn't appear in Tibet till about 800 AD. Also I don't think the Jews tried to wipe out pagan religions while Christianity did but mostly after it was adopted by the Roman Empire maybe about 300 AD. Although I am a practicing Buddhist I have to say the political history of Tibet is decidedly patchy and there were attempts to 'replace' Bon with Buddhism. Although many sects actually assimilated Bon practices and shamanistic approaches - this is particularly true of Nyingmapa.

Now you are being very silly.

Thank you Kemosabe.

What does that squiggly stuff say???

How dare you! Cherokees are Native Americans not Indians.

No - Nungali said 'how the Aryans were not to be defined by race or ethnicity' it was Voidisyinyang who in the second post began the Nazi accusations. Aryan is a language group i.e. PIE in the same way as so many people across the world speak English today, in the Roman Empire it was Greek, in Medieval Europe Latin - by all ethnic groups.

Maelstrom of chaos How I would describe my room Before I clean up.

Maybe we can separate out the linguistics from the ethnicity and leave out the Aryan=Nazi rubbish??? I find the general subject interesting and some of the links have been excellent - but I don't understand the antagonism.

The major differences between the three branches of Buddhism
Apech replied to roger's topic in Buddhist Discussion
Thanks for the correction - I guess that I meant sva-bhava for 'real' as in self existing. But all the translations of these terms are inexact. As far as secular mindfulness I have two objections. One is that it is lifted from buddhism without context - as dharma is the three fold path of meditation, ethics/morals and learning or study. While I am very much of the practice lineage I have realised that without the right motivation (bodhicitta) and understanding the view there are no conditions for the practice of mediation to ripen and bear fruit. Some basic ideas like karma and rebirth need to accepted (even if provisionally). At least this is how I have been taught along traditional lines. And it is my experience also. The second reason is that meditation is a tool for awakening - which is a long and difficult path and not for the faint hearted - the idea that it can be a nice relaxation or a form of therapy is I believe misguided. I think there are some well publicised cases where this has all gone wrong leading to some troubling results. You do need to learn to relax in order to sit properly - but you don't sit in order to relax. I realise these concerns are my personal view and I don't want to put people off seeking help where they can find it. But I think it's very much the case of buyer beware. -
I regard all DBs threads as like real world conversations which may naturally diverge from the original topic, involve humour, also serious debate, go round the houses and back again, hopefully all good natured. Sometimes topics get heated and very long winded where people are desperate to prove they are right about something - the occasional cat pic etc. is a welcome diversion from posts littered with links and very large font and so on. I like humour but if anything I have posted has caused legitimate hurt please contact me and I will delete or edit with pleasure.
