Well yes. What they are banking on is that even a Leave vote gives them two years to adjust and find a way to keep us in. That has been obvious from the start.

Why isn't everyone in the Leave campaign signing that petition? Suspicious I is.

For clarity's sake, chaps, can I point out that the Sutra quoted by Jonesboy above - the Lankavatara Sutra is a mahayana sutra which is important in the yogacara (citta-matra) - that is 'mind-only' schools of Buddhism such as Ch'an or Zen. As such its interpretation of Buddhism is that there is an existent mind-stream and that all phenomena arise and cease momentarily in that mind stream. Thus the phenomena themselves have no self-existence being reliant on the mind stream - citta. This tradition which originates in the teachings of the great Asanga is different to the madhyamaka tradition of Nagarjuna. Different not necessarily as being in conflict with each other but as having subtly different views on both mind and phenomena. For instance the prasangika madhymaka would say that 'mind' itself is also empty of selfhood and thus neither existent or non-existent etc. Interestingly in cross reference to RT's thread on Mipham and Rangtong/Zhentong Madhyamaka it is said that Asanga taught Zhentong Madhyamaka as a kind of esoteric yogacara teaching. Where the continuum of buddha nature is existent but yet 'empty of other'. This however would be a lineage stream of Zhentong which might be different to the Kagyu version which came from Maitripa via Marpa and so on. Zhentong Madhyamaka would uphold that buddha-nature is existent and while it is not in relation to phenomena as a cause it is by its mere presence that which allows phenomena to appear to arise and cease - while being in itself unborn and un ceasing. Returning to the theme of Buddhism and Daoism it is held by scholars that the Neo-Daoism of Wang Bi and others of the Xuanxue school 'mysterious or abstruse origin school' who held that being 'you' arose from non-being 'wu' set the intellectual scene for the easy assimilation of Buddhist philosophy in China. Although the Daoist theme of one becomes, two, becomes three becomes the 10k things - is clearly realist - the fact that the 10k things come to be and persist in complete dependence on the Dao as both their origin and 'that-by-which-they-are' has a subtlety which is not a million miles from dependent origination.

No I mean people with no backbone.

I've met a lot of spineless humans.

I recall at the height of the financial crisis when Portugal was being bailed out by the troika and everyone was prophesying doom there was a newspaper article (probably the Daily Mail) that the Royal Navy was ready to send ships to Lisbon to bring the ex-pat Brits home. This was met with hoots of derision by various slightly over weight bright pink types sitting in bars in the Algarve. Just forget everything you read in British press about Brits living abroad and what might happen to them. Its all bananas. True there are a few very unwise people who emigrate without proper funds or on a basis of some unrealistic dream. But mostly people know what they are doing, what they want and get the best conditions for themselves that they can. Why not? Life is short eh? If you are British and have lived abroad for less than 15 years you can vote in the referendum. I imagine many but not all will vote remain. But actually in most cases being in or out will make very little difference as the UK most likely be treated a bit like the Swiss as quasi in but not actually in the EU. I think very few will return because of Brexit - just as very few people will leave the UK who are non-nationals because of it. The effects will be much longer term than the day to day practicalities of life and work.

No she's calling you an amphibian.

I prefer The Dharma Bums to On the Road but they're both great.

I live not a million miles from the Lines of Torres Vedras whereby the Iron Duke defeated the Napoleonic army. He did so, as you probably know by superior planning and logistics. When we defeated the French in the Seven Years War it was similarly down to superior administration and decision making systems - although we like to attribute these things to valour in the field that's just the icing on the cake. Watching the French and with keen eyes no doubt goes back to Edward 3 and the Black Prince. Perhaps we should reinstate a claim for Gascony and Calais while we're at it. What's ours is ours after all.

I'll bet you are still sore about the Peninsular War.

The Greeks lost their marbles - they're in the British Museum.

That is, unfortunately completely spot on. I would charge anyone who uses the NHS through self inflicted alcohol abuse - having had the experience of visiting ER on a Sunday morning.

Oh come on, I could show similar pics from England or the US.

What happened to the Green Tiger? Ireland was doing very well before the 2008/9 bump. And seemed to revive quickly afterwards also.
-
Well I was with you up to a point. Don't you think that IDS, Gove and Boris should present some kind of prospectus for a way forward... ???? Why do we have to bow our heads meekly? the Germans don't, the French don't so why should we?

He missed being knocked out by a falling ripe mango. Squelch - splat!

How many times have this and previous UK administration promised to reduce immigration - and how many times have they succeeded. Zero. Why? Because their partners in business want and need the immigrant workers. In or out of the EU this will remain the same. As far as the EU is concerned the current crisis was precipitated by failing to control the external borders of Europe. Give me a convincing plan for the development of the UK outside the EU and I will vote for it. I've asked a fair number of times now and all I get is rhetoric.

Good point by Mr. Dawkins there. We shouldn't be having this referendum - it is only because Cameron promised it to try to offset the growing pressure from UKIP and his own right wing. Instead of standing up for what he thinks is right he blinked under pressure and so we have this referendum. I don't agree about Schengen and the Euro. Things have moved on. The refugee crisis - a huge clusterfuck - has shown that you can't realistically have no internal borders if you have no outer borders. If the EU had collectively preserved the outer border (in this case mostly Greece) then it would have been ok. While I argue that free movement of labour within the EU is beneficial, and that we have to honour our commitments under international law to genuine asylum seekers correctly - this does not mean open the gates to all and everyone. That's just madness. The Eurozone is a similar cock up. But Britain has prospered by being in the EU but outside the Eurozone. My understanding is that Cameron has negotiated on the basis that we do not have to enter it. So the idea that we will be marginalised because of these policies I find no longer convincing. I think actually we will be well placed to lead a group to counter German/French dominance. I'm not sure that 78/78 votes is actually factually correct. But even supposing it is - the power and influence of the UK in the world is based mostly on our history and the special relationship with the US. The USA has said it wants us in the EU. Our historical ties and influence do not change. Part of the reason for the strength of our economy is membership of the EU - in fact we have played quite a good game of taking advantage of the plusses and avoiding the negatives - the idea that it is just a weight around our neck is ridiculous. Again - ask the Leave people what the plan is to maintain the UK as a successful country outside the EU and you just get vague aspirations.
-
We can't control EU migration because there is free movement of labour. Which is a good thing - without it London and our major cities would have collapsed by now. Even if we Brexit we still won't 'control' immigration because business needs it. So that whole issue is a lie. You won't find any argument from the Leave side which shows exactly how the UK would function outside the EU. I've asked and all you get is emotional arguments which make no sense. Brexit is a romantic illusion based on the UK's historical political distancing from mainland Europe. It's out of date and makes no real sense. But it does appeal to many people's instincts - when they feel threatened by a changing world they want to retreat into their island shell. That's all it is really.
