Steve, Clearly you did not understand my guess which was 132. Simply reverse the number 231, then deduct the original from the reverse = 99. Add the digits of the original 1+ 3+2 =6 ... double the six to reflect the dualistic nature of reality =12 add 12 to 99 = 111. therefore implicit in my answer was the winning number. QED.

Opening the Dragon Gate: The Making of a Modern Taoist Wizard

Enjoyed this book very much and learned a lot from it. Maybe there's a couple of areas where you have to suspend disbelief (I can't remember) but this is true of most biographies of mystics. -

One thing we haven't really touched on on this thread is that part of the divide was based on a switch of traditional Labour voters to the SNP. While England is currently governed by a coalition of Tory and sub-Tory (Lib Dems) it is really quite strongly Conservative (Tory). the Scottish MPs were always strongly Labour and past Labour governments relied on their numbers for a majority. So if the 'yes' campaign had won it was expected that England would be Tory in perpetuity while Scotland would be a lefty refuge. This is why both the main parties in England panicked at the prospect of the 'yes' win but for different reasons.

Archbishop of Canterbury 'doubts God exists'
Apech replied to Nikolai1's topic in General Discussion
Point 1) Church of England = Conservative Party at prayer ... can't remember who said that. Point 2) many English academic and other so called Buddhists import Protestant religious theory into Buddhism and end up as Stephen Batchelor or John Peacock etc. While others bring their Catholicism. Its very hard to shake childhood indoctrination try as you might. -
For a Tory ... officially the Conservative and Unionist Party (although that refers to the union with Ireland) it would be political suicide to deconstruct the Union. Cameron's head would have rolled ... as it may still do.

Sitting/Laying Meditation & Falling Asleep
Apech replied to ValleyStream's topic in Daoist Discussion
There's sleepiness and there's sleepiness. Sometimes it's due to energy depletion. If say you have dissipated a lot of energy then your mind seeks way to renew and you will become drowsy. Not necessarily a bad thing ... in fact a good thing. Take a nap. Otherwise as your attention begins to shift from normal waking consciousness into something deeper there is a kind of barrier like a cloud which you have to navigate. This can make you sleepy if you don't know how to switch attention to a new way of seeing. Here you just need to persist. By repeated trying you will eventually stumble on the knack for this cross over. -
Accepting change ... and even cultivating change are essential to enjoying life and spiritual development. There is a tendency in all of us to court dependability, safety and familiarity ... but it's a mistake. At other times your life urges you to change and if you ignore it you may become ill or otherwise decline.
