  6. Sorry Folks

When I first bought the windows laptop I was going to put Ubuntu on it but they had changed the BIOs to something else which made the install tricky so I gave up.
  7. Sorry Folks

I hate Windows 8 ... I have a lap top with it pre-installed. All I ever use is the desktop but those damn tiles keep appearing. Luckily most of the time I'm on my Mac mini which is the bestest.
  8. Transforming Lines and the 3 Coin Method

I use all changing lines. But there are systems which chose one 'ruling' line to read for the reading. You can also use each one independently to generate several transform hexs. But it gets quite complicated when you do that. If you read Stephen Karcher http://www.amazon.com/Total-I-Ching-Myths-Change/dp/074993980X there's a good introduction on how to generate a set of hexagrams from the original for in depth readings. I'm not so keep on some of his shamanic interpretations but it's interesting non the less.
  9. Persistent Rain

    Is there a FetchApp?
  10. Personally I do blame the The Faerie Folk every time my glasses go missing or I find an odd sock in the drawer. Those little bastards skipping and singing about with their tiny violins .... jeezzzz! if only the government would get off their fat arses and do something.
  11. Help us help Buddhist Discussion

The thread was opened with the best of intentions because at the time we were getting many reports on topics in the Buddhist section. What surprised us was that although Buddhist principles should mean healthy argument could be conducted without getting personal ... people were not really conducting themselves in this way. Also some of the ideas expressed were not really Buddhist. As a moderator and a Buddhist I wanted to ask people to stick to some slightly stricter rules in this sub forum and also to move some content out of Buddhist and into General if it was attacking or critical of Buddhism. But as we do not normally moderate content in this way it would be a controversial move ... so we wanted to see what the membership thought of this idea. It could apply also to the Taoist sub where content which is not really Taoist could be moved to General.

  13. Shamar Rinpoche dies

A quote from this great teacher:
  14. http://www.theguardian.com/science/2014/aug/21/sea-plankton-have-been-found-on-the-international-space-station-but-how-did-they-get-there Sea plankton have been found on the outside of the International Space Station, a Russian news agency reports. Itar-Tass says scientists on the space station, whose first component was launched into orbit in 1998, found the plankton – a source of food to many sea creatures – when taking samples from the windows (or “illuminators”).
  15. Ah! But I have the true Toiletbrush of the Lord ... yours is a joke ... not even a real toilet brush probably a large Toothbrush
  16. Haiku Chain

That's a good burger. Run along now and behave. Do it with relish.
  17. @Brian and Joeblast I still have a strong feeling that you both believe in something that doesn't really exist and when you see that its not really working you blame 'the other' = big government, corporate fascism or something. But I am glad that you have this ideal as it seems very human to me. And I hope that I am wrong and it does exist. I live by the way in a country which was held back for generations by fascists (40% literacy rates), underwent a communist revolution (bloodless)(universal education and healthcare) and then became a democracy (all in the last 40 years or so) and had the natural base of its economy destroyed by the European Union.
  18. @Brian I don't disagree with any of that as an aspiration. However what i generally refer to as capitalism is what we actually have in the world (warts and all) not some abstract perfected version. Maybe its just how we apply terms differently. I think that individual liberty and the rule of law (which protects that liberty) is the key Western value which underpins the US, UK, Europe, Australia etc.
  19. It rhymes with mystery.
  20. The ancient name of Isis (Greek for of Egyptian As.t 'aset' where the 't' means feminine and may be silent) is spelled with a sign for a throne which is phonetically 'st' and this forms words which mean 'stand, place, exist'. The late form of Isis as worshipped in the Roman period became to be seen as a universal mother representing 'all that exists'.
  21. If you look at the values of the John Lewis Partnership in UK which I posted above ... you can see the values enshrined as the 'happiness of the members' ... similar to 'life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness' - the American Constitution a product of the European Enlightenment and something of which I am sure you are justly proud. This is not something based on capital but on human beings. Place human beings and their worth at the centre and things could improve.
  22. yes because it has unusual values as follows; 'The first is historical. The John Lewis Partnership exists today because of the extraordinary vision and ideals of our Founder, John Spedan Lewis, who signed away his personal ownership rights in a growing retail company to allow future generations of employees to take forward his 'experiment in industrial democracy'. Not unreasonably, he wanted to leave some clear guidelines for his successors, so that the values which had motivated him would not be eroded with the passage of time. The second reason looks forward. Spedan Lewis was committed to establishing a 'better form of business', and the challenge for Partners of today is to prove that a business which is not driven by the demands of outside shareholders and which sets high standards of behaviour can flourish in the competitive conditions of the third millennium. Indeed, we aim to demonstrate that adhering to these Principles and Rules enables us over the long term to outperform companies with conventional ownership structures. The Constitution states that 'the happiness of its members' is the Partnership's ultimate purpose, recognising that such happiness depends on having a satisfying job in a successful business. It establishes a system of 'rights and responsibilities', which places on all Partners the obligation to work for the improvement of our business in the knowledge that we share the rewards of success. The Constitution defines mechanisms to provide for the management of the Partnership, with checks and balances to ensure accountability, transparency and honesty. It established the representation of the co-owners on the Partnership Board through the election of Partners as Directors (Elected Directors) and it also determines the role of the Partners' Counsellor.
  23. The accumulation of capital of course. (in answer tot he first part not the second)
