Ah well you have clearly observed things that have not interested me. Again no preference given to people with that symbol.

eyes open gone- gone merge with nothing, nothing is merged. No horizon.

Just for clarity the Mod Team have no idea who are paying members (I assume you mean people who have donated) and who are not.

*** Moderator Message *** Hello, This is a moderator message ... but more of a reflection than anything. We already have a number of threads in Off Topic about American (or rather US) politics. I realise that what happens in the States affects all of us ... but I for one have a great deal of trouble working out what you guys are talking about. The OP was about political ethics for Taoists and Buddhists ... which I would find interesting. For instance what would a purely Taoist state look like? Any chance discussing this sort of thing instead of Medicare and wotnot ... you've already done the US stuff to death several times. This thread is in General Discussion which is supposed to be about spiritual paths. Just asking. Apech for Mod Team *** Moderator Message ends ***

Armadillos are from South America I think. Keep dreaming!

Actually I'm thinking the forked tail might be a late addition because this early 2nd Dynasty set (on the right) has more of a straight wide tail than a forked one. And the nose is straight not so curved.

The road to hell is paved with good intentions

THE VOICE OF THE DEVIL All Bibles or sacred codes, have been the causes of the following Errors. 1. That Man has two real existing principles Viz: a Body & a Soul. 2. That Energy, call'd Evil, is alone from the Body, & that Reason, call'd Good, is alone from the Soul. 3. That God will torment Man in Eternity for following his Energies. But the following Contraries to these are True. 1. Man has no Body distinct from his Soul; for that call'd Body is a portion of Soul discern'd by the five Senses, the chief inlets of Soul in this age. 2. Energy is the only life and is from the Body and Reason is the bound or outward circumference of Energy. 3. Energy is Eternal Delight. William Blake -

Jean Paul Sartre walks into a cafe. Waiter: What can I get for you, sir? Sartre: I'd like a coffee but with no cream. Waiter: I'm sorry sir, we're out of cream. Sartre: Then I'll have a coffee with no milk.

Medicine is not only a science; it is also an art. It does not consist of compounding pills and plasters; it deals with the very processes of life, which must be understood before they may be guided. Paracelsus

In Egyptian mythology when the heaven (Nut) merged with earth (Geb) everything returned to the great void or abyss (the Nun). It was the end of the cycle of creation.
-
Yes it's a good theory. Its the other features which are the stumbling block for most theories (there are a lot). I agree it must be an actual animal, cos although the Egyptians did have composite animals it was quite obvious when they did this. the square ears and forked tail are fairly consistent details ... including the 'was' sceptre. I would like Set to be a wild dog maybe because of association with the desert, storms and so on. I was hoping you knew of dog which looked more like him than a saluki. BTW some people dispute Anubis as jackal ... black is a colour symbolic of regenerative energy ... e.g. black mud from Nile which brings fertility and also Osiris sometimes shown with black face.
-
Ok. No I'm sure its not a pig ... but Set is sometimes called a black pig in the texts (e.g. BoD). I think you're theory is good because of link to Anpu etc. but the problem is the square ears, long curved snout and also a forked tail. I was genuinely asking if there was a breed of dog that looks like that... The body when shown is a bit saluki like ... there was a hunting dog in Egypt.
-
Do you mean this one? is there a dog looks like that?
-
No. Buddhists I have come into contact with view wealth and success as evidence of previous good acts and a positive thing. Attachment to such things is a problem of course. I would suggest you read round about Buddhism and Taoism to get a good idea about both ways.

I think you can have teachers just to learn beneficial exercises and so on. That just teach you things that you can then go away and learn for yourself. I think most of the time this is the best arrangement. There are also people you meet who can teach you at a deeper level ... something more challenging and fundamental about who you are and the nature of reality. For these kinds of relationships there has to be a genuine connection, a feeling of confidence for the other person. Often the mistake is to want this to happen when it hasn't ... so people fabricate a guru ... or follow someone for spurious reasons not because of a genuine connection. Good high level teachers do not allow you to become dependent, in fact they throw you back on yourself all the time. I would say spirituality is a matter individual expression and not conformity. Listening to scriptures can be useful if you take something from them which you can use to apply to you and your own life.

Aaron, It was a joke of course because everyone seemed suddenly to be leaving. You raised serious issues of sexual abuse in religious institutions ... the point being that the solution is not to ignore them or pretend they don't exist. I think the DL's response in quoting medieval manuscripts and rules on misconduct shows a great deal of naivety on his part and even in those days lists of what's ok what's not and what's worse than what is to miss the main point that people should not harm others through actions. That's the over-riding rule ... i.e. is it harmful, is it consensual or not. Bickering on here I think wears everyone down, not least the mod team, is it possible perhaps one day that we can discuss things, disagree even, without attacking each other and trying to read in the psychology of the other person? I hope so. A.

Unkown by Egyptologists ... lots of theories .... he is definitely related to a black pig so it might be an extinct variety of pig ... or an animal like an okapi ... but no one really knows.

Anubis is in charge of embalming (mummification) he was said to be 'at the head of the divine hall' which is the embalming tent ... he had seven secret oils with which to do this. The necropolis was in the western desert and one of the animals which inhabited this desert was the jackal. There are other reasons why jackal which are a bit hard to explain ... but this is the overt reason. There is a second jackal god called Wepwawet (or Apuat) who's name means 'Opener of the Ways' ... the task of this god was to find the tomb of Osiris hidden in desert near Abydos. Anubis/Wepwawet is also then a guide in the netherworld ... a psychopomp. The cat goddess is Bastet (sometimes Bast) and there is also the Lioness Sekhmet and Pacht ('she who scratches'). What do you mean by a feline/canine thing going on? Lots of bird gods. Hawk = Ra Falcon = Horus Ibis = Thoth Are you asking ... why all the animal headed gods? That's an interesting one.

It is Anubis weighing the heart. In the Egyptian Book of the Dead Chapter 125 the heart = mind, will, character is weighed against ma'at = truth. And there was something called the negative confession where the deceased says he has not done certain things like lie, steal and kill and so on. Anubis is normally considered to be a jackal and not a dog as such ... but the Greeks used to call him 'the Egyptian Dog' and swear by him. By then he was linked closely with Isis who was worshiped throughout the Roman Empire.
