Well in a way I can. Obviously there are straight forward connections like blanco (Sp) and branco (Pt) and blank (Eng) and also black. Whereas white comes down another line of words which also mean to shine. Interestingly enough in physics a body which emits light perfectly dependent only on its temperature (i.e. how much energy it has) is called a black body. If you take a plain piece of paper we call it blank, meaning absence of colour, but it is white. We even say things like 'all the colour drained from her face and she turned white as a sheet'. If we examine light which contains all colours superimposed simultaneously it is white light. If we take the same blank sheet of paper and crayons of all colours and scribble repeatedly over it, then eventually it will turn black. So the black paper has all colours on it and the white light has all colour in it. Space with white light passing unopposed through it appears black. It lacks radiant colour. Black and white are not dualistic opposites. Meaning can shift in a spectrum like way around the sounds expressed.

Well we'll have to disagree because I still think emotion retains the sense of pushing away.

emotion (n.) 1570s, "a (social) moving, stirring, agitation," from Middle French émotion (16c.), from Old French emouvoir "stir up" (12c.), from Latin emovere "move out, remove, agitate," from assimilated form of ex "out" (see ex-) + movere "to move" (from PIE root *meue- "to push away"). Sense of "strong feeling" is first recorded 1650s; extended to any feeling by 1808. https://www.etymonline.com/word/emotion#etymonline_v_5814

In my better moments I think that what is happening in the world is just cause and effect working itself out - but otherwise I find myself quite disturbed by all the violence (on all sides) and although I am a natural hermit (quasi-sociopath ) the Covid restrictions on travel and meeting people have eventually begun to take their toll. I haven't been able to go back to England to see my aged parents as I usually do - and the fact that one of my daughters is expecting another child in December and I probably won't be able to go to see her either makes me a little gloomy. I'm trying to rely on my cultivation/practice and have been through a process of throwing off anything that seems unnecessary - so I do a very basic simple sitting meditation now. It's going ok but doing without 'props' can be a little challenging. This board is always a place I come back to - even if relations become a bit fraught at times - we've lost some grounding which was embodied in Marblehead in previous times. God, I miss trolling him about the British Empire ... those were the days. Anyway, looking forward, there's got to be a turning point when some of this shit we are going through lifts. Maybe someone good at astrology or the Ching can tell us when that will be. Then when the clouds part we can look to the sunlit uplands. I'm praying - it's all to the good and we must soldier on

Kale salad and broccolli - man there's no need to make yourself suffer so!

Are you seriously comparing what happened to native Americans to what happened in British India? Most organised religion is some kind of scourge.

In your world does anyone have agency apart from the Anglos?

I wondered how long it would be before you started blaming the Raj.

It has stopped, it seems, being an open public forum for interested participants with a level playing field approach to ideas and opinions. Apparently now it's more important how people feel about what you say than what you actually say, what knowledge you may be able to impart. Have people been offended - is there passive/aggressive voice involved? Do your ideas fit with my orthodoxy my dogma about what is right-think in a particular subject area? Are you being nice about it? Can you speak in the form of language that doesn't disturb me? Can you leave my sacred cows to safely graze? Well, my friends, sharpness and wit, satire and irony, humour, banter and sometimes even rudeness and anger. The occasional put down - disgust with stupidity - a sharp analytic mental knife. All these things are sacred to gods of all ages. They purify and uphold truth which is greater than opinion, shine light into undiscovered landscapes and are kinder than seeming kindness itself.
