Dr. Eliot's Five Foot Shelf (The Harvard Classics)
DalTheJigsaw123 posted a topic in General Discussion
I am beginning what some will call a difficult, yet rewarding goal. In the next year or so, I will be reading and writing on the well known "Dr.Eliot's Five Foot Shelf," known as The Harvard Classics. My goal is to finish 51 volumes in the next year. I hope is to use this Blog as my Journal, which will enable me to engage with my thoughts, ideas, confusions, logic, and analytical triumph in understanding these classics. Once I complete 51 volumes of "The Harvard Classics," I intend to dive into the Great Books also known as the "Great Books of the Western World." I know that there are many other important works of the Eastern Canon and other cultural importance's out there, which I intend to read, but I have to begin somewhere. I will write up a more in-depth summary of Dr.Eliot's "The Harvard Classics," and the Mortimer Adler's "The Great Books of the Western World," as I proceed to read, review, annotate and chew on these classics. I will proceed to write about each book, page and paragraph as I see fit. If you'd like more information, or simply looking to chat about these historical classics, please do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected] This is a beginning of self-education and self-improvement and I hope you will join me. You can follow my journey on my Blog - http://www.leonbasin.blogspot.com -

Beautiful Documentary! High Anxieties: The Mathematics of Chaos!
DalTheJigsaw123 posted a topic in Group Studies
The documentary looks at the modern advances in mathematics and how they affect our understanding of physics, economics, environmental issues and human psychology. The film looks at how developments in 20th Century mathematics have affected our view of the world, and particularly how the financial economy and earth’s environment are now seen as inherently unpredictable. The film looks at the influence the work of Henri Poincare and Alexander Lyapunov had on later developments in mathematics. It includes interviews with David Ruelle, about chaos theory and turbulence, the economist Paul Ormerod about the unpredictability of economic systems, and James Lovelock the founder of Gaia theory about climate change and tipping points in the environment. As we approach tipping points in both the economy and the climate, the film examines the mathematics we have been reluctant to face up to and asks if, even now, we would rather bury our heads in the sand rather than face harsh truths. http://www.youtube.com/watch?list=PL6A4853E48FC0C986&v=VRT0c4qT3LI&feature=player_embedded#!- 2 replies

It's a very interesting Documentary. Anyone have additional thoughts other than what is presented in it? I'm still trying to gather more information and see if I can put some of the stuff to use. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dOk0tZHwCs4

Yeah, I know! That doesn't mean the link to the article shouldn't work? Perhaps...

That is very interesting! Will start cultivating more. I have been running/yoga, but that is definitely not the same. Works different things.

I wish i can grow my own food, I would have to buy property, which is like at least $400 or so a month. Those things you described is awesome! Yeah, machines definitely have replaced jobs. There have been so many articles/books written on this subject. It's only getting worse. You unemployed right now? What if you can give lessons in QiGong or something like that?

Interesting! Check out Onnit.com - They have good prices for Kettle Balls.

Wow! I have to find a good Bushman documentary! That is amazing!
-
Nope! It does not work.

I have the experience and it's terrible for Qi. I feel depleted and empty afterwards. When I was younger, I had no problem to energize myself, but as I get older it's becoming harder and harder to re-energize afterwards.

LoL! Nice! That's pretty amazing stuff, thanks for sharing. Yeah, running definitely gives me a high! It's a beautiful thing. I wish it lasted longer!!

Didn't work!

From my experience, Karma is real. Not sure about reincarnation.

Wow! I mean I still sit cross-legged, but I try to be more careful. Funny, as I'm trying to prepare for a half-marathon. I ran 6.6 miles 2 days ago.
