Meditation as a cure for mental illness
Bum Grasshopper replied to SFJane's topic in General Discussion
Welcome back to the board SFJane! I found your post to be very inspiring. Would you mind if I re posted it to a brainwave entrainment board? BWE is a type of meditation that many use to treat depression, bi-polar disorder and schizophrenia. I think your post will help many on that site. -
"Who do you pray to when your playing Craps?"
Bum Grasshopper replied to mcompton1973's topic in General Discussion
An Indian casino in northern Michigan. Wasn't really "banned", I was just told that "perhaps you may want to play another game for a while" while two rather large security personnel stood at my sides. This is what happened the other time. If I set the dice and threw in a controlled manner, the dealer would yell "no roll!" and would warn me that any thing other than feeding the chickens and both dice hitting the back wall is not acceptable and I will not be allowed to roll. I promptly colored up, cashed out and left. My favorite way to start play at a table is to place the 6 and 8 for a double unit, a $5 table that would be $12 each. When either hits, you win $14 and take both bets down a unit. That way you are only risking $12 and you already won $14. If you lose 3 times, move to a different table or take a break for a while. If the table is hot, or there is a good shooter, I will place a double unit on the 5,6 and 8 and a single unit in the field. That way I will win on any number other than 7. If I'm up a bit, I'll play the hard ways too. -
For long and slow cooked dishes one should start with a base of aromatics such as celery, carrot and onion. Garlic is a favorite of mine. Herbs such as parsley, rosemary, thyme and oregano can be added at the beginning of cooking, but a small addition of chopped herb at the end can add an additional layer of flavor. More delicate herbs such as tarragon, marjoram or savory must be added at the end. Any kind of alcohol added even in small quantities will bring out additional flavor that water based solvents will not. The cheaper cuts of meat do better in crock pots such as chuck, brisket, shoulder and shanks do better than the leaner cuts. Most fish will disintegrate except the very firm such as monkfish and shark. Surprisingly, some shellfish like scallops, shrimp, squid and octopus that toughens if cooked too long will get tender again if cooked for a long time. I also find that adding a little acid such as lemon or lime juice just before serving will brighten up the sometimes dull flavor of crock pot cooked dishes.

"Who do you pray to when your playing Craps?"
Bum Grasshopper replied to mcompton1973's topic in General Discussion
Not unless you practice dice throwing skills. Craps is one, if not the only game the authorities let you "deal, the cards" so to speak. There are dice sets and throwing techniques that can influence the game in your favor. Of course, you can politely be "asked" to not play the game anymore. Happened to me more than once. -
"Who do you pray to when your playing Craps?"

The difference between people who pray in church and people who pray at the craps table is that people who pray at the craps table really mean it! -
Brainwave entrainment for muscle recover
Bum Grasshopper replied to buscon's topic in General Discussion
It probably wont have much effect. A delta state is deep sleep when the body repairs it's self. If the entrainment was working, you would fall asleep. SMR or high alpha wold be best for relaxed concentration. -
Brainwave entrainment for muscle recover

A delta session just after studying helps consolidate the information to memory. listening to beta sessions during work or studying helps intensify focus. SMR or low beta/high alpha is useful for relaxed concentration. Asymmetrical session which send beta to the left hemisphere and SMR to the right have been found to sharpen focus for complex tasks. Listening to recorded material while in a theta state makes it easier to commit to memory. Hope this helps -
I don't agree. I saw some spiritual concepts throughout the movie. One of the sub plots of this multi faceted movie had you wondering if life was just a dream and when you got killed in that dream, you simply woke up. It was their meditation type training that allowed them to control their realities. "I once dreamed I wad a butterfly. When I awoke, I did not know if I was a man dreaming I was a butterfly, or a butterfly dreaming I was a man." - Chuang Tzu

A while back I started a thread about the feng shui of living next to a graveyard. The general consensus was that it was the worst place to live and I should avoid it at all costs. Well, it's been over 2 months and nothing bad has happened at all. To the contrary, a lot of positive things have manifested including finding a good job nearby that I enjoy as well as renewed social contacts with family and friends. I meditate and practice not 100' from the graves. I find the yin energy to balance out my yang nature. And the neighbors don't complain when I have a loud party!

Penn and Teller: Two Morons Learn Martial Arts
Bum Grasshopper replied to DalTheJigsaw123's topic in General Discussion
In the show they neglect to mention that practicing martial arts is fun! -A fun form of exercise that just may save your life some day -strengthens mind and body -lowers stress -increases tolerance of others -increases confidence -increases awareness of our surroundings To be this is not bullshit. -
No, it is not real. Unless this guy's lungs and sinus cavities are filled with water, his eardrums would have been blown out without equalizing the pressure. Freedivers hold their breath for so long by hyperventilating, then forcing more air into the lungs by using the tongue as a bellows. Being deeply relaxed burns less oxygen. Then they must resist the pain and panic reaction when the carbon dioxide builds in the system. Convulsions are next. Surfacing is the most dangerous part of the dive when the compressed carbon dioxide is released into the brain and causes blackout. Very dangerous sport. If you try this without strict supervision by those who know, you deserve to be taken out of the gene pool.

Am I a man dreaming of being a butterfly, or am I a butterfly dreaming I am a man?

Question About Supporting My Nephew's Catholic Upbringing
Bum Grasshopper replied to RyanO's topic in General Discussion
Yep. Don't know where you are from, or what years you attended Catholic school, but I had the exact experience. It seemed that the well to do families that donated a lot to the church got the preferential treatment. -
Question About Supporting My Nephew's Catholic Upbringing
Bum Grasshopper replied to RyanO's topic in General Discussion
I was born and raised catholic. Even went to catholic school. I did everything they said, with all my heart. I went to church every day. I went to confession when I "sinned". I prayed a lot. It did nothing for me. When I was old enough to realize this, I told my parents. I was forced to still go to church every Sunday and holy day by my abusive mother. This led to resentment. I was convinced that the church was nothing but a scam. A big lie. I had always felt a spiritual connection when out in nature. Mountains, streams lakes and caves were magical places. This eventually led me to Taoism. Now I see God as Tao. Jesus was a gifted healer, profit and manifestatior, something that we are all capable of of. We are all "sons of God". The church is a powerful political organization that will go to any length to protect it's world domination. History has proved that. So to summarize, I think it is O.K. to raise your kids a particular faith as long as it's core values are honorable. It will develop character and virtue. But when they are old enough you should let them explore their own spiritually and decide for themselves if organized religion is right for them. -
Brainwave entrainment in the beta/gamma range has been proven to sharpen concentration, focus and I.Q.

Sweet! I've been patiently waiting for the Burning Palm DVD's. Any idea on a release date?

One can say that your bad mood has always been there and your meditation has merely uncovered it. This would be a good thing as now you can work on resolving whatever it is that is causing the negative feelings.

Well, the physical benefits, as well as the timing issuies have weighed out over the spiritual concerns, and I have put a deposit down on the property. I am putting faith in belief that if I can keep my energy level higher than the negative energy emanating from across the street, I should be fine. Thank you all for your responses and concern. I was expecting posts like "put a bagua mirror above the door" or "place your bed so your head faces away from the graveyard". From what I gather, this kind of stuff is not enough to counter the bad FS from the graveyard. Is it a waste to to do these kind of things? Can I get some kind of benefit from it?

Pros Nice , quiet, safe neighborhood Brand new remodeled interior Nicely landscaped front yard Good sized fenced in back yard (I have a dog) Affordable rent, water and lawn service included Nice landlord Low utilities Perfect size and floor plan for our needs Close to parks and shopping Plenty of storage space Ample parking Cons Possible bad feng shui being close to a cemetery What would you do?
-
But it is such a beautiful house that fits our needs and our budget. Is there nothing we can do to even dampen the negative effects?

A wise man once said : "Even the finest tea becomes bitter if steeped too long." Hmmm...

I wish there would be more discussions on this on TTB rather than all alchemy and martial arts. Loved the video. I am looking forward to watching more. LMAO!!!

I couldn't even get the precontemplation video. i get a page that tells you to fill out a form that is not there, and he will e-mail you the video. Guess it starts to cost $$ at that point.

I read somewhere that like 80% of all plant life is poisonous to humans if ingested. I can't think of any mammal or bird that will kill you if eaten. Maybe a very few species of fish or amphibian.

Question on Sleeping/Body/Mind?
Bum Grasshopper replied to DalTheJigsaw123's topic in General Discussion
I don't think this is entirely correct. We sleep in cycles of REM and non- REM sleep. During REM sleep, we dream and it is believed that the brain sorts out memories, kind of like cleaning up and organizing thoughts. During this phase, the brain emits mostly theta waves, same as deep meditation. During non- REM sleep, the brainwaves slow to delta waves 2- .05hz. This is when hormones are released and the body seems to be repairing it's self. This deep sleep occurs early in the cycle. Alcohol consumption before sleep will disturb this portion. That is why even when you get your 8 hour of sleep after drinking, you still feel tired. Then we go back to REM sleep and theta state 7-4HZ. But when we return to non-REM delta, we don't go as deep as the previous cycle. By the end of the cycle, we are still going into non- REM sleep, but out brain is in theta. This is why when you get awakened in the middle of the night you feel groggy, but in the morning you awake refreshed. Science is still trying to figure out what is going on during that phase, but they know it is mostly the brain working on memories and things learned. So our body needs about 1/4 to 1/3 of our sleep cycle. The brain uses the rest. Meditating increases out time in a theta state, resulting in less time needed in sleep.
